This is a 1971 ABC recut, recorded and issued after the group had their surprise big UK hit with the 'Hey Girl Don't Bother Me' reissue. The Muscle Shoals recorded 1963 original, also on ABC (Paramount) is far superior.

April 19, 201114 yr In my defence, your honour, I was on my hols when this thread came and went. A Mrs. Connolly of Huddersfield will vouch for this if asked... But what I said is true - ABC did briefly re-sign the Tams after HGDBM was a hit, and they cut a few new sessions with them (including the remake of 'What Kind Of Fool...') but no more hits came out of the deal and they were soon dropped by the label.
April 22, 201114 yr Ah so it's a re-cut. Mystery solved ! Although It still does sound very much like the original vocal to my ears. I have to say I do prefer the re-cut version, I mean there's more to it. However, personal preference is usually given to the first version that you heard of a said tune and with me it was the probe version. Incidently, anyone know if the probe version has ever made it onto cd? Did the probe ever gain a US release?
April 22, 201114 yr Just read the a-joining thread and found it very interesting that both versions actually got a probe UK release (surely a mix up at the pressing plant) which could have seriously hampered it's progress as the HCDBM follow up. Interesting too that it could be a bit of remixing (1971 style).
April 22, 201114 yr Interesting too that it could be a bit of remixing (1971 style). Let me say it again so there's no doubt - IT IS NOT A REMIX OF THE ORIGINAL, IT IS A RECUT... The original version was recorded at the first FAME studio in Muscle Shoals. The studio was only recording in mono, so there's no multitrack tape for anyone to 'remix' The 1971 recut therefore contains no elements of the original version. Any speculation in the other thread that it might be a remix is just that - speculation. It is also wrong.
April 22, 201114 yr as tony says the tams were dropped from abc in 1969 and signed to capitol but their popularity in the uk spiraled and in the summer of 1970 they had a minor pop hit with be young be foolish and then soon after hey girl was a major hit. so abc re- signed them but no more sucesses followed and by 1972 they were dropped altogether dave
