Theodore W. Wing II, RIP

Teddy was one of Philly's great behind the scenes guys. He was a powerhouse in the Philadelphia music scene, working with many artists in developing their careers. a good friend of Bunny Sigler, Patti LaBelle and many others. He was instrumental in bringing the talents of The Power Attorney Band to the public's notice when they were a prison band. He passed away on 15/10/13, aged 65.
Owner of Nicetown, Star Island & Brotherhood Records, Teddy was always ready to help anyone interested in the Philadelphia music scene.  I will miss him greatly....

Theodore W. Wing II, 65, of Wynnefield, a special-education teacher who also worked for the City of Philadelphia, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Lankenau Hospital of complications from an earlier heart attack.

At the time of his death, Mr. Wing, known as Ted, was a special-education teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden. He had worked there for two years and at Camden High School for about six years.

Before that, he had been vice president of government sales for Ray Communications; a deputy commissioner of public property for Philadelphia under Mayor Ed Rendell; vice president of data and voice technologies for AT&T in Bala Cynwyd; and interim manager of the African American Historical and Cultural Museum in Philadelphia through AT&T's loaned-executive program.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, he graduated from Olney High School in 1966 and completed a bachelor of arts degree in political science from Howard University in 1970.

He earned a master of science in communications in 1972 from Syracuse University and master of science degrees in secondary education and instructional technology from St. Joseph's University.

A lifelong student, Mr. Wing earned certificates in special education from Rowan University, a real estate certificate from Temple University, and a business certificate from George Washington University.

He met Denise Bristol through a friend, and they married in 1977. The couple settled in Wynnefield and had three children.

Mr. Wing's life was filled with interesting hobbies. "There was rarely a time when Ted was not embarking on a number of projects," his family said in a statement.

Harnessing his passion for communications and music, he produced and directed films at Howard and Syracuse Universities, and produced numerous R&B recordings under his company label, Nicetown Records. Just before his death, he was working on a film project, his family said.

He and his wife owned and operated Denny's Steaks & Hoagies from 1975 to 1981, and Tender Care Day Care Center from 1981 to 2005, both in West Philadelphia.

An avid model train hobbyist, he was a member of train collecting clubs. He also was a member of the Howard University Alumni Club and Syracuse University Alumni Club and was a lifetime voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. He attended Grammy Awards presentations in New York, Washington and Los Angeles, his family said.

An Episcopalian, Mr. Wing was a lifelong member of St. Simon the Cyrenian Episcopal Church in Philadelphia.

Surviving besides his wife of 36 years are sons Theodore III and Allen; daughter Hillary; a grandson; and a foster sister.
