Can anyone recommend good archive sources for early Gospel sounds? Looking for paper ephemera, historical information, sounds, etc. Any info about actual or virtual archives gratefully received. (This is for a work project involving young people researching roots of Gospel.

Robert Darden's book People Get Ready!: A New History of Gospel Music" is absolutely essential reading for anyone interested in the history of gospel music in particular and the roots of african american music in general. Thoroughly researched and well written (although a bit "academic" at times).

Just a suggestion - have you tried the US Library of Congress archives, online? I know a lot of US folk and blues (together with interviews/biog details) are on there, some of them dating back to the 1930s - perhaps there is gospel as well? I know I've heard Gospel tracks on Andy Kershaw's show, that he's said have been taken from the LoC archives. Never searched myself....good luck!
