I just got this white label Linda Griner 45 in the mail today. It looks sort of suspicious. The vinyl is very thick and there's a lot of space in the dead wax, and the inner groove is sort of tight in the deadwax area (it spirals around for about 5 times in the deadwax). There are some letters not stamped in the deadwax, and they are half covered up by the label: DMV-020101. The envious side has DMV-020100, and before that it says "nashville matrix" in script (I can't tell if it's a stamp or not, but it is in smaller letters). There might have been a nashville matrix marking on the cruel love side that was covered up by the label (since the dead wax markings appear to be covered up by the label). Also, the center hole is sort of suspicious, or at least there is a bunch of wear around it. Here is a photo. Manship's bootleg guide doesn't list anything, but I'm scared this was a US repro or something (given that motown is collectable in the US)? Anyone have any opinion about authenticity:

Mine is the 'Good-by Cruel world' version so I can't see that they would boot 2 different titles ( and if it's a boot, Mr Cunliffe is in serious trouble!!!)

Nick Brown has (or had) the "World" misprint with exactly the same run-out (ie, about 5 revs worth of groove). He bought this in 1989.

Definite original demo IMO.

So do I, and my copy came from someone who bought it in the early 70s, long before there was any kind of demand for it outside of Motown collector circles.

Thanks a lot. The thing is, the doowop guys were the original bootleggers and the record (esp. the envious side) also appeals to doowop collectors. Either way, it wouldn't exist in both forms ('world' and 'love') as a boot in the same way, so I'm convinced it's an original. Thanks everyone.
