Please forgive me being an Ignoramous, but I've only started seriously buying vinyl recently. My efforts 20 years + ago were limited to Disco Demand, Casino Classics et al.

I have just bought a copy of " I Was Born to Love You" - Herbert Hunter on SPAR 9009, which doesn't look right and sure doesn't play right. It was described as a "re-issue". There's a couple more in the post described likewise, either: "Re-issues" or "2nd Issues".

Am I getting what I think I should be getting, or am I getting bootlegs?

Any enlightenment on the subject gratefully accepted, or am I a div'?

An original Herbert Hunter should have the Nashville Matrix stamped in the run out groove, you will spot it when you look.

Boots often termed "re issues" or "second issues". Stick to buying originals. Not all are expensive, many cheap quality sounds out there.

I have to say though, this euphenism of "re-issue" pisses me off. Why can't people be straight about it? I've just enquired about the:

"nice re-issue 45 in -m cond cameo parkway yvonne baker you didnt say a word/vicki baines country girl",

currently on Ebay. When asked if it's a bootleg the seller tells me, "yes, its a reissue, originals on cameo parkway,but be careful as theres a bootleg on that label too".

Turns out he's actually selling the bootleg he's talking about. Why didn't he just say so? And what's the point of owning a bootleg anyway? - surely anyone can go and get a batch of vinyl pressed and sell it.

I'm pretty sure with e-bay you aren't allowed to say "bootleg" as it is illegal and therefore e-bay would be breaking the law. You do get some legit re-issues but the majority of "re-issues" are boots.

Chalky is right (as usual!), e-bay does not allow the selling of bootlegs (or 'made-up cd's come to that), so if the seller didn't know who you were he may of been covering his arse...

The bootleg he was refering to was probably the yvonne baker booted on cameo (white label i think) passed off as the original, unlike the latest one with VB on the other side which shouldn't fool any one!

Well if you're after an original Yvonne Baker the last I've seen on a couple of lists have all been around £450.

Incidentally is the UK London release legit, I always assumed it was?

Yep, the London issue is indeed legit. The following releases were issued by London between 1975 and 1978, mainly aimed at the Northern Soul market:

I can remember going into the local soul import record shop in the late '70s, where these were all in stock at 90p each!! Worth noting that "You Just Don't Know" also came out in France and Italy (I think), also on London, with picture sleeves. BTW, all the releases above also have red label demo counterparts which look really neat!

When I used to buy lots of Boots/"2nd issues"(hee hee sorry)in the 70s because I was skint, didn't travel much & didn't know much,I just wanted to hear as many records as possible they were always known as "pressings" (weren't they?)
