Hi Paul - he clearly has a great talent, and he does loads of other famous bass players material from the States. I have his name at home somewhere. He has kindly offered to play on any of my stuff and frankly given half the chance I am sure he would come up with a Motown style lick without a problem. It is some I could consider for the future.

I had a try at the DILY bassline but I played it an octave higher to help my wee fingers,

Bassline is not James Jamerson as the track was recorded in LA, and he didn't go out to LA until the early 70's.

I have a custom Fender P-J but I'll never be able to play like that. A couple of my mates / clients love it and often give me a rendition of "Bernadette" when they call round.

It must be one of the most popular bass lines ever.

Hello Carl,

The way things are, there's no reason why you shouldn't be using players such as Arcellus, no matter where they live.

He could quickly sync up to your tracks, cut a bass line and send it back via a dropbox.

I've worked with a few really good bass guitarists and it's amazing that once you play them something like "Bernadette", you often find out these guys are even better than you thought they were. It just goes to show what an education a song like that is.

I'm think I'm sure that J.J. Jnr only used his index finger as the 'hook' but did any of ,Bob Babbitt, Michael Henderson, Eddie Watkins, Clarence Isabell, Professor Beard, Joe James or Tony Newton use a plectrum ?

Tomthemod- yes, I seem to recall it was LA and not a Detroit recording. I am no expert, but the back beats are too low as well. They probably said in the studio try and make it Detroit sounding! Also the drum fills an dpick ups are slightly different. Nevertheless, great.

Paul - I agree. I would rather have a studio full of talent bouncing things around of each other, but that is the next best thing. The good thing about doing it how you say, is that there is a definitive evidence of communication between individuals, so for copyright purposes, an electronic understanding between each party.

When the musicians have talent and passion like this, it is criminal to use a synth. I can accept that studio work is very expensive and options present themselves for strings etc. For example I have tried to pay string quartets, gospel choirs, etc, in London, to get no response or interest in what I was up to, and that was just to do my demos. I gave up and use the electronic method now, and would even consider it on recording a master, god forbid, well until I could afford the real deal. Mind you, I have found a great horn section that is interested in any work so let's see what happens in the future. I may well consider a UK recording one day.

Not soul.....but just check this bloke out, Im no musician, unless you count the comb & toilet paper but this must take some putting together.
