He may not have enjoyed the level of success of some of his contemporaries, but his singles and albums for Memphis label Goldwax are considered to set the standard by which so much great southern soul is measured. While James' discography is small by comparison with some of his peers, it makes a very strong case for quality over quantity. Only a handful of James' 1960s Goldwax recordings can be considered to be anything less than essential. This compilation of James' most successful Goldwax recordings is issued to tie in with the 50th anniversary, in 2017, of James best known and most highly regarded single 'Dark End Of The Street'. Naturally, it's here along with 19 other superb tracks that Kent hopes will please long-term fans who will enjoy having all the hits (and more!) in one place, as well as encouraging newer recruits to check out our other Kent compilations on James and to enjoy his remarkably consistent discography in its entirety. 3. William Bell on Stax, Otis, race and regression By Bill Forman You don’t miss your water, till your well runs dry,” reflected William Bell in the chorus of his Stax Records debut single. But from a career perspective, after some 60 years and 16 albums, the Memphis soul legend has never let that happen. In recent years, he has performed at the Obama White House, played Royal Albert Hall, and been inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame alongside Justin Timberlake. He was also prominently featured in the documentary Take Me to the River, which inspired his touring show of the same name with an all-star band that includes Bobby Rush and Charlie Musselwhite. (“One of the best things we saw at Bonnaroo,” declared Rolling Stone magazine.) 20. Chuck Jackson - Big New York Soul: Wand Records 1961-1966 View full article
  21. Chuck Jackson - Big New York Soul - Wand Records 1961-1966 A new release from Kent records featuring Chuck Jackson Wand Records output. Including hits, alternates, favourites, previously unissued and new-to-CD Wand recordings. Preview Listen A preview of the release notes by @ady croasdellfollows, the full version can be read via the weblink below We released the best of Chuck Jackson’s Wand recordings on “Good Things” (CDKEND 935) in 1990 and subsequently put out his eight Wand albums as four CD two-fers. A reassessment of the tapes from our Wand trawl of the mid-80s, along with more recent discoveries, means we are now able to issue a final CD of previously unreleased tracks and rarities. Of the eight previously unheard songs, highlights are the perky opener ‘Things Just Ain’t Right’, a tremendous cover of the Curtis Mayfield-written ‘Need To Belong’, originally covered by Jerry Butler, and ‘Anymore’, a duet with Dionne Warwick. Also included are ‘Little By Little’, a great uptempo dancer previously available on the Kent LP “A Powerful Soul” in 1987, ‘The Silencer’, a secret agent-styled film theme released only on a 3CD set in the 90s, and a demo of ‘In Between Tears’ previously exclusive to another Kent LP. There are two very good B-sides, ‘For All Time’ and ‘And That’s Saying A Lot’, which have never appeared before on CD. Some collectors may know ‘And That’s Saying A Lot’ from Christine Perfect’s cover on her first solo LP. ‘Big New York’, which appeared on our deleted “In The Naked City” CD, is also included. https://acerecords.co.uk/big-new-york-soul-wand-records-1961-1966 Track Listings 1.
