Still catching up with the last few weeks releases, today the focus falls back on Kent with this Stax related most recent release. The Other Side Of The Trax - Stax-Volt 45 rpm Rarities 1964-1968 CDTOP 442 This comp features 24 Stax/Volt b-side tracks from 1964-1968. The release notes (see link below) informs us that this is the first time out on cd for all the 24 and for most the first time seen the light of day since the initial single release back when. Directed by Poull Brien and shot in the backyard of Daptone's House of Soul in Bushwick, Brooklyn, features Charles Bradley at his best with the Menahan Street Band. Charles Bradley's voice has evolved from a lifetime of paying dues, having nomadically labored for decades at various day jobs from Maine to Alaska - singing and performing in his spare time - before re-settling in his hometown Brooklyn and eventually finding a musical home at Dunham. In his distinctively rough-hewn timbre one hears the unmistakable voice of experience - each note and gruff inflection a reflection of his extended, sometimes rocky, personal path. It's only fitting that producer, Brenneck (also a member of The Dap-Kings and The Budos Band), would recognize in Bradley a kindred musical spirit - a singer whose performances exude both raw power and poignant beauty.

Northern Soul – A Photographic Journey’ runs at the gallery from Saturday, January 23, to Saturday, February 20, and is the latest long-term project by Wigan photographer Brian Cannon. Brian has been creating music-related imagery professionally since 1988 and his notable past clients include Oasis and The Verve, for whom he produced all the record sleeves in the 1990s. He continues to document the Northern Soul scene today in a geographically diverse, fly-on-the-wall manner. Entry to the exhibition is free and the gallery – which is in Church Square – is open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10am to 5pm. Just announced the live artist for this years Cleethorpes Weekender... The 6TS Rhythm ‘N’ Soul Society is pleased to announce that Maxine Brown will be our live US soul act for the Cleethorpes Northern & Rare Soul Weekender on June 10th-12th 2016. Maxine needs no introduction to European soul fans; she is the only singer to have appeared more than once at our original Rare Soul weekender - the longest-running event of its kind. She was due to appear at the Crossfire weekender about four years ago but a serious illness, from what should have been a routine operation, meant she had to cancel and has taken some time to regain full health. That, she has done remarkably well, as I found when visiting New York last year with my grown-up family. Maxine serenaded us in song and with stories over a superb Italian meal. She is still full of talent and fun and will win the hearts of the Cleethorpes crowd as she has so effectively in the past. Video from the Soul Source video feature

The end of the just gone month saw the first release from Ace Records timely resurrection of the 'Deep Soul' label. The below quote lifted from the press blurb sums it all up quite well... Deep Shadows - Little Ann 2. Stay Away - The Turn Arounds Deep Shadows by Little Ann is an unissued Dave Hamilton produced master from Detroit which was recorded around 1967. It has grown steadily in the rare soul public's esteem ever since its CD debut in 1998. It has been covered by new bands and features in a very atmospheric Jordan trainers internet ad in the USA. Kent have only just discovered that the magnificent 1966-recorded ballad Stay Away was by Los Angeles vocal group the Turn Arounds. It was recorded in Atlanta but has the feel of a classic mid 60s Chess-recorded ballad; no doubt exactly what the group was trying to achieve at the time.
