dave rs allnighter planner was unpinned as I felt it duplicated some of the already existing event guide features here's the 'dynamic' allnighter section from guide /calendar/8-allnighters/ you would think that be hard to fill all 7 but nowadays it may be different ? be interesting see how things gone on Monday morning ? -

With another weekend on its way, its time for a quick heads up on the Event Guide Lot of events, but no weekenders! Though allnighter wise it seems that choice is the main thrust this weekend with 7 yep thats right I said 7 allnighters on Saturday, here are... Let us all know how they get on via the reviews, am sure be appreciated Friday and Saturday sees a busy soul nite category, The live category is showing shows from Shaun and Star (Europe) and Jocelyn Brown (London - Hideaway ) and the alldayers category is active as well. Tech wise, improvements continue in the background and with a major upgrade on its way (which will hopefully get rid of the remaining glitches) very soon the future does looks shiney. Reviews getting used and you can catch the event feature to see a wide range of them being posted, lengthy allnighter takes, some 'straight up' ones and so on. Have to add a moderation request... do ask all members , if you are going to mention links to 'third party' sites such as facebook group pages etc then please do it in the main event info only! Not the event comments, as while Soul Source is an easy going place, the sites event comments is setup to encourage discussion on the actual event not for members to plug other sites Mobile users can now get to the event guide direct via the new 'space shuttle' icon Mobile Icon memory aid if needed... EPISODE GUIDES Soul Deep - The Story of Black Popular Music Southern Soul - Ep 4/6 BBC Two May 28, 9.00-10.00pm In the summer of 1967, Otis Redding performed in front of a 200,000 strong, mainly white, crowd at the Monterey Pop Festival. Five years after walking into Stax Records studio in Memphis as an unknown singer, he was now breaking into the mass white market and seducing its counter culture without diluting his sound. Soul Deep follows both Redding's rise, as he became the embodiment of Sixties soul music, and that of Stax Records as it crossed the racial divide at a time of segregation. Founded by two whites- Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton - black and white musicians came together at Stax to create gritty, passionate soul. "Stax Records was an oddity - it was like an oasis in the desert. Both black and white musicians became friends because of what they did. It was wonderful. But right outside those doors it stopped," comments Stax songwriter David Porter. Redding's triumphs at Stax encouraged other labels to look for this new style raw talent.The local Gold Wax label signed an incredible talent - James Carr. One of his rare, previously unseen television performances features in Soul Deep. Classics include Love Attack and At The Dark End Of The Street. "The roar, the depth of soul that we hear when James opens his mouth is the voice of the south. It's that depth of pain and longing for something better," comments Alan Walden, Redding's former manager. The sound of the south began to influence other labels. New York-based Atlantic Records' Jerry Wexler would bring his musicians south whenever they needed inspiration.Wilson Pickett's huge hit In the Midnight Hour resulted from a night in Memphis' Lorraine Motel with Stax songwriter Steve Cropper and a bottle of "Jack". After Wexler teamed performers Sam and Dave up with Stax writers Isaac Hayes and David Porter, classic hits included Soul Man and Hold On, I'm Comin'. Wexler was soon alerted to another southern record company - Rick Hall's Fame Studio in sleepy Muscle Shoals - where Percy Sledge cut southern soul's first number one pop hit,When a Man Loves A Woman. It was here that he brought a new artist he had just signed - Aretha Franklin. "It was so evident to me that she was a blazing genius. She was so far ahead of the pack. She made a lot of beautiful records for Columbia but they were all over the place, they had no focus, no direction," explains Wexler. Fame studio musician Dan Penn describes Franklin's dramatic entrance. "She sat down by the piano and played this unknown chord and the musicians were just like little bugs running for their instruments." That day she recorded her number one hit I Never Loved A Man The Way I Loved You. Her next monster hit was with Redding's Respect. Imbuing it with a new social relevance, it became an anthem and she an icon. In 1968, in a strange twist of fate, Martin Luther King was murdered in the same Memphis motel where Pickett and Cropper penned In the Midnight Hour a few years before. His death heralded the end of an extraordinary era of hope as black attitudes hardened. "The fraternalism between black musicians and white musicians seemed to suffer," explains Wexler. A new black sound was on it way! Guess this familiar cover may just bring back a few memories for some of you out there. Well 36 years after the original 1979 release its had a bit of a re-working and now this fresh lp has been launched as Volume 2, and is now available... on vinyl of course. Heres the blurb In November 1979 Neil Rushton's Inferno label released a Northern Soul compilation album "Out On The Floor Tonight" from tracks it had issued on 45s. The LP came out with no fuss, and in the mad at the time frenzy at the time frenzy of all things Northern Soul at the time was issued, sold OK, and was soon forgotten as other new releases came along. In the 1980's, UK released Rare Soul compilations became the flavour of the month and "Out On The Floor Tonight" quietly built up a following, before being hailed as a classic of the genre towards the end of the decade by a new Mod scene and the UK "On The Run" Scooterist juggernaut. In more recent times, the Soul Soul renaissance has seen the album hailed as iconic, and several leading movers and shakers on the movement have praised the LP as being their perfect introduction to the strange but wonderful world of Northern Soul. The zittgiest is happening, with announcement of the release, with many people acknowledging Out On The Floor Tonight", the first model, as their all time favorite Northern Soul album. In the spirit of that, Part 2 features 3 tracks also featured in Part 1 - the other 13 hand picked tracks (no fillers here) are all time classics too. This really is "16 Classic Northern Soul Floor Fillers", so all the signs are that this much delayed "follow up" will earn the same credibility as the first release. Numero Groups most recent is a project that has been featured recently on a few msm sites such as Rolling Stone. Its all about the reissuing of a rare lp titled 'Eyes of Love' by 'The Edge Of Darkness'. The Edge Of Darkness being a group made up of prisoners who were in the late 70s serving 6 to 60 years prison sentences On Sept 14th 1979 a 5 hour recording session was held at Virginia’s Powhatan Correctional Facility (near Richmond). Never-before-seen photographs (like the one above) accompany this fascinating story of the Virginia Correctional System’s most unlikely breakouts.
