From 1965 to 1970, musicians in New York City fused English and Spanish lyrics with Afro-Cuban, jazz, rock and R&B rhythms and melodies to create Latin boogaloo. It was a period of revolution and social awakening and young Latinos in search of their identity, growing up in neighborhoods like East Harlem and the South Bronx, adopted Latin boogaloo as their soundtrack. This audience, once on the verge of leaving Latin music behind, now came to appreciate it. With the emergence of salsa, another New York creation, some say the Latin boogaloo was killed off, not by the fans, but by industry politics. In 2008 I directed four short documentary films for the ‘3 Minute Wonder’ strand on Channel 4. The core theme of each film centred on the idea of a gathering, be it a religious pilgrimage, a nightclub, a protest or one mans mission to save his town. It was my mission to create these simple docs with a cinematic approach and as a reflection of how docs in the 60’s and 70’s even in the 1980’s would have been shot on film using quality lenses. I felt the aesthetic approach to documentary was lost at that time and had given way to cheaper means of production, which is valid but held no allure. I also wanted to look at simple narratives that could work over a very short duration centred solely on the one character in turn creating an intimate portrait of that person. Passionate about the Northern Soul scene since the late seventies, she is an authority on the subject and it's impact on youth culture. "This is Love" asks her young cast to name their favourite NS record. Mmm a tough choice...especially when there are so many to choose from. The Precisions "If This Is Love" is the record that illustrates their emotional connection to the music and their dazzling dance moves show that NS is still capturing the hearts and minds of the young. In The Club" was a Granada TV series on famous North West clubs other episodes inc The Cavern etc 'Think it was only broadcast in the North West Area there is a post by a member who was involved from 2006 in the forums at link below http://www.soul-source.co.uk/forum/topic/34184-in-the-club-wigan-casino/#comment-362092 I took part in the making of the `In the Club` vid above............. The Wigan episode was part of a Series of shows about the Northern Club scene down the years, Northern being the location, not the type of Music as it was only meant to be shown in the Granada TV region.. The First was about the Cavern, the Last about Creamfields, the Middle one being about the Casino........ It was not meant to be a video about the soul scene as such, just a `Punters` point of view of going to the above Clubs. I agree with you to a point as it is just 'another` Wigan Video and if you never went, then it doubless gets a bit boring, but at least this programme asked a few `Different' people a few 'different' questions about the old place, instead of just digging up the 'Usual Suspects' in Searling, Roberts and co just to tell us all (again) how wonderfull they all were.... Granada TV "In The Club - Wigan Casino" 24/06/2003 (not this episode but given as a guide) internet quote... Members of Wigan casino talk about the feelings they have after the closure of the all-nighter in 1981.
