Calendonia Soul Review - Irish Greg
Heres news of another event that like most featured on Soul Source is keeping Northern moving forward rather than backwards. Cheers to Irish Greg for passing on Scotland? What a night - The place just rocked!!!. Well done to Martin,Caroline and Lenny etc for starting off this event and providing Scotland with a club that is forward thinking in its music policy. The crowd was well up for it and even the people from the Street loved it and danced happily next to hardcore Soulies like Kenny Burrell&co. Sounds played varied from Rare/Classic Sixties to 7ts and a touch of RnB - Magnetics,Mayfield Singers,Districts,Charles Sheffield,Explosive Dynamics,Fascinators,Johnny Maestro,TC Lee&Bricklayers etc etc. I would like to add that the people were so nice and friendly that you didnt want to leave the venue, so get to the next one which has Butch spinning the Vinyl plus residents. Celtic 2-0 got a nice response from the Crowd!!! Greg

News From Weekend
Dome last nite, ok did say more details but will keep it a bit brief as going over old ground here as it was a case of yet another Quality Top Nite, Top Sounds, Top Crowd - if youve read the reviews over the last 2 years...well its still going strong. One of the UKs TOP events, its as simple as that. Playlists should follow soon hopefully. Great crowd there from all over the place, UK and beyond, good to catch up with stacks of people there and as always good to see all from all Londons quality events there, from the big ones to the small. Showing just how good and healthy the scene is down there. Way to do it! News: Prestayn weekender looks like going to be a right old shindig, read 700 plus tickets already sold so get over to http://www.soulweekenders.com Second week in March, great venue, great line up, low prices. Jo Wallace passed on word of forthcoming CD comp Soul Satisfaction - The Motown Connection Vol 3, the classy Vol 2 has already been lauded as one of the cd releases of last year. She ran off the listing and it sounds to me like its a going to be a sure fire winner. More details and hopefully a review closer to release date. Good to hear that some top North West Djs know the score with current going ons. If out and about and at any quality events, get your views in, use submit newslink on left, comments or just email them

Four Vandals - Out on Goldmine
Originally posted a week a go, bit out of sync due to crash but seems still valid news as seems that one top Northern Dj has returned his copy, as wants his money back!!! Four Vandals Well mentioned this a fair while back, but now it seems its official. The next Goldmine all-nighter cd, will feature both tracks by the Four Vandals. Apparently it seems that the source where they licensed the tracks from wishes to remain anonymous Comments are owned by the poster. We arent responsible for their content. Re: Four Vandals due out on Goldmine(Score: 1) by benji on Jan 22, 2002 - 10:00 AM (User info | Send a Message) (IP: 212.89.109.125) doesnt surprise me at all that the source wants to remain anonymous. this either means that both 4 vandals tracks are ian levine productions or that goldmine didnt licencse them at all which they already did in the past on some stuff. anybody disagree? BTW, i have to say, that IF both tracks are levine made he did well compared to the below average shite he put out in the past.

Desboro Nite Review
Well after seeing there was much going on last Saturday night in London, myself and Louise decided to travel a few miles the small town in Desborough in Northamptonshire to see what the soul night at the Ritz was like. we travelled up late on Saturday afternoon, after booking ourselves into the local travel lodge at weekend special rate (£25.00 if you book on a Saturday not bad) so we would not have to drive back and both could have a drink. After having a few beers with the locals in this small town with only one cash point (glad it was working) and then thinking had we done the right thing travelling and booking a hotel but both off us were surprised at the venue, very nice place to have a soul night, much like a small Wigan casino, fair size dance floor, balcony going all the way round, large area to sit and a small bit for record dealers, the bar bit on the small side but did not take to long to get served and very good prices also, small modern room upstairs. As the night went on the music was right across the board playing modern right though to classic northern soul which makes a nice change. few face had also come up from the London area Johnny , Michelle, Reg and Dave Townsend, Ross . I think all in all it was a good night even 100 club dj and promoter ady crosdale was djing (must have been like coming home for him) so for a off the cuff night and with a small out lay very enjoyable night, we will go again later in the year .the only small think i would have said about the whole night was the sound system, music was not that load which was a bit off a shame, but still a very good venue and well worth a visit. by robbo (?) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re: Desborough (the Ritz) Review by IanG on Jan 21, 2002 - 04:52 PM We also travelled down to Desborough again (from Langley, Derbyshire ) on Saturday night. We had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Thought that Simon ? (sorry dont know second name) did a brilliant spot - playing a lot of my favourites mostly from the Stafford era I guess (somebody no doubt will put me right). Have to agree about the sound system - it wasnt quite loud enough with the conversation in the larger seated area sometimes getting in the way of the music. That aside, I think the Ritz is a great venue with a buzzing atmosphrere and worth travelling for, heres looking forward to the next one. Ian and Roz Gregory

Top Nite Again At The Dome
Into the third year and still doing the business. A great nite at the Dome in Tufnall Park London with the CSC at full steam ahead, great spots by the residents, top drawer stuff by guest Andy Dyson, and Ady Lupton, crowd somewhere around 375-400 (a guess), dancefloor packed solid most of nite, normal top atmosphere, normal top sounds, a most enjoyable nite at one of the UKs top venues. More details, news, odds and sods to follow later Re: Dome Last Nite - Top Nite(Score: 1) by Soulgirl on Jan 26, 2002 - 06:19 PM (User info | Send a Message) It sure was... and for me it was my first visit! I was hugely surprised at the quality of the music most of which I had not really heard before let alone danced my socks off to so It was a real treat for me and I shall certainly be a regular now! It was lovely to meet you Mike even though you probably thought I should be in an Institute instead of a Soul night *grin*. Steve Scordas made me laugh by speaking into his dictaphone every time a record came on... thats dedication for you. It was truely a stomping night... I think I died and went to heaven

Calendonia Soul In The Papers
Well told you it was being talked about, seems not just in the rare soul world, here's an article ripped from Scotlands biggest selling evening paper "Evening Times" on Saturdays nite. Just found out its Written by Beverley Adams and is up at http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/ ONE CLUB THAT LOOKS TO THE PAST "Dance night has best of 60s soul" PUT on your best Clarks shoes, prepare your hands for lots of action and dont bring your drink on the dance floor. Scotlands youngest Northern Soul Night presents its third outing on Saturday at the Woodside social Club, Kelvinbridge, and there is a collection of unspoken rules for those who go. Northern Soul, for those of you who are unaware, is a music movement which grew out of the dreams and desires of factory workers in places like Detroit and Chicago in the 60s. Long before House Music dominated the club scene Teary ;eyed teenages stayed up all night to dance without a partner as the small, independent labels made music that appealed to our hearts and souls. Northern Soul wasnt Motown, it didnt have the financial backing. In the 70s, as much of the music was discovered, it was popular in Britains industrial corners like the North and East Midlands and, in Scotland, Shotts! The Wigan Casino club was probably the most famed of these places with a membership of 100,000 in its heyday. Thirty years on and Scotlands youngest Northern Soul club is continuing the tradition of playing rarities and originals you wont find in most record shops. Although the club only started in September it has won acclaim in what is a notoriously difficult scene to crack. On Saturday night the guest DJ is Irish Greg, promoter and DJ at Londons world famous Capitol Soul Club. From 9pm until 2am DJs Scotch Martin and Big Lenny will play the best of 60s Black America. Martin was a guest DJ at Londons 100 Club soul all-nighter this month and he maintains that despite the long history of soul music this is definitely not a retro night. Martin, who puts on the night with fellow northern Soul specialist Kevin McCardle, says: "Northern Soul has always been about progression, finding new, undiscovered records from the 60s and making them popular. "In recent years, some nights have tended to play all oldies from the 70s heyday, but were definitely more into newly discovered or underplayed records. This policy keeps it current and relevant today, so punters shouldnt expect just Motowns greatest hits." Norman Cook (AKA Fat Boy Slim) certainly felt the music was relevant when he sampled a northern classic called Sliced Tomatoes for his hit Funk Soul Brother (thats the catchy guitar lick). Artists including Paul Weller, Sharleen Spiteri and Belle & Sebastian all credit the music as a major influence and over thirty years on it shows no sign of going away. Northern Soul has its own etiquette and anyone attending the night should clap loudly after hearing a record they like ; the name will be announced by the DJ so you know who you are listening to. Expect intricate dancing on the floor as people take their music seriously, and taking your drink onto the hallowed dance floor is the equivalent of setting fire to the venue. You can also expect some record stalls selling original Northern Soul numbers on the night. But beware, some records can cost around £500 and one was even known to sell for £15,000. There is a lot of kudos attached to finding an original. Admission to www.Caledoniasoul.com is £5. Doors open at 9pm and close at 12.30am.
