  1. Soul In The City All-Dayer 04 June 02 Soul In The City All-Dayer Bank Holiday 4th June Extra Jubilee bank holiday? OK lets have an All - Dayer S.I.T.C. has been going since December 2001& what started as a one off Christmas drink with the lads while playing a bit of Northern has become a regular monthly event on the London calender. We are mainly an oldies based venue but do try to use a bit of imagination as can be seen by our playlists on various outlets i.e. KTF Soultalk etc. as well as websites like Soul Source. We operate the first Tuesday of every month upstairs at The Old Blue Last pub in Great Eastern Street EC2, free entry, beer £2 a pint & with the first Tuesday of June a bank holiday it was too good an opportunity to miss. Apprehension over numbers, from me at least was unheeded, from 4pm healthy numbers were inside & the place was heaving by 5pm. A few travellers were present but the majority of attendees were regulars from the main London venues making it more like a party than anything else The atmosphere was superb, very laid back but at the same time up for anything that was played. So much so,even some of our “seasoned “guest DJ’s commented on it. The music from start till finish was varied & valid as was Martin “12pint” Thomson who started the day off brightly & finished it with a slightly glazed look about him!( as did most of us) A big thanks to all our guest Dj’s Andy Faulkner, Alan Handscombe,Simon Bridger,Rob Messer, Nick Brown who did his bit for the Jubilee by playing Queen of Fools & Kenny Burrell who chained his record box to a very unstable coat rack & also managed to clock up a very reasonable 2200 miles driving around the country Djing that weekend! DJ rosta was completed by SITC regulars Paul Mckay & myself Dave Greenhill. Some fantastic music was played, brilliant atmosphere & to top it all Helen turned up with a huge bag of assorted sandwiches ! Shame she didn’t dish out asprins for the following days headaches. Next SITC is on 2nd July, for a great night with the cheapest booze at a London venue get yourself down there! DJ’s playlists Martin Thomson early doors set: 3.00-3.45: Charades- you better believe it (Harlem Hit Parade) Ricardo King- On a hot summers day in the big city (Joker) Untouchables- Raisin sugar cane (Madison) Marvin Gaye- One more heartache (Tamla) Little Charles & Sidewinders- Its a heartache (Decca) Lee Williams & Cymbals- Lost love (Carnival) Montclairs- Wait for me baby (Sunburst) Jackie Ross- Keep your chin up (Brunswick) The Little Foxes- So glad your love dont change (Okeh) Fabulous Apollas- some good in everything bad (Valtone) Patti Austin- Leave a little love (Coral) Jean Brooks- tomorrow never came (G Note) Maxine Brown- you upset my soul (Wand) Mirettes- your kind aint no good (Mirwood) Radiants- Heartbreak society (Chess) Willy McDougal- Dont turn around (Kinard) Dean Barlow- third window from the right (Lescay) Calvin Williams- Lonely youll be (Northern De la) Vonns- So many days (King) Ila Van- got to get to Jim Johnson (Roulette) Rudy Lambert- love (Club 7) 11.15-12.00am: Silky Hargreaves- Keep loving me like you do (Dearborn) Tan Geers-let my heart and soul be free (Okeh) Sugar and Spices- have faith in me (Swan) Clarence Hill- a lot of loving going around (Mainstream) Danny White-miss fine miss fine (Frisco) Eddy Bo- Our love will never falter (Blue Jay) Gladys Tyler- a little bitty girl (Decca) Jimmy Castor- its OK (Jet set) Debonairs- Please come back baby (Soul Click) Cliff Nobles- my love is getting stronger (Atlantic) Charades- key to my happiness (MGM) Mousie and the Traps- How about you (Toddlin Town) Syl Johnson- do you know what love is (Special Agent) Celest Hardie- youre gone (Reynolds) Betty LLoyd- Im catching on (BSC) Chubby & Turnpikes- I didnt try (Capitol) Simon Bridger (In no particular order): Otis Rush - Homework @ Duke DJ Fabulous Denos - Ive enjoyed being loved by you @ King WDJ The Soul City - Who do you think you are @ Goodtime WDJ Tommy Mosley - You lied, i cried, love died @ Uptown Temptations - Girl (why you wanna make me blue) @ Gordy Four Tops - Wonderful baby @ Motown Clark Richard - Come home @ Show Falcons - Good good feeling @ Big Wheel Yvonne Carroll - Please dont go @ Vee-Jay DJ April Stevens - Wanting you @ M-G-M Bobby Hutton - Come see whats left of me @ Philips Lilly Fields - Ive got to tell you @ Holton Magic Night - If you & i had never met @ Roulette WDJ Linda Jones - My heart needs a break @ Warner Bros. 4. Leaving Soul Heaven (Mono) early evening we arrive to find equipment in wrong place, much dismantling and rewiring later (cheers Joe M) and ensuring needles are not going to jump we are ready. Doyles top room is a small wooden floored venue with a capacity of around 100 though it has a side room and bar for any overspill, a feel good Dublin atmosphere awaits you (bar till 2am). After the recent success of the Paul Davis All-nighter featuring Carl Willingham (and most of these local players), an air of optimism is starting to creep into the small Dublin scene. To build the scene our policy to begin with is mainly Classics/Motown a revival night feel if you will. The crowd is a mix of youth and knowledgeable experience (though not as old as me) The place filled surprisingly early, first on was John Nowlen who launched us with the following; Joy Lovejoy-In orbit Billy Butler- My Heart is hurting Syl Johnson- Same kind of thing Vito&the Salutations- I'd best be going Radiants- Whole lot of woman Profiles- A little misunderstanding Al Greene- Dont leave me Azie Mortimer- You cant take it away Samuel Moore&TNT- I'm so jealous Johnny Bragg- Theyre talking about me Mamie Galore- Too many memories Flirtations- How can you tell me Chuck Jackson- Forget about me Steve Mancha- Your still in my heart 3 Degrees - Gotta draw the line Bobby Womack- Tried and convicted Precisions- Instant heartbreak Jackie Wilson- Try it againSteve Mancha- Hate yourself in the morning Velvelettes- These things will keep me loving you Temptations- Beautys only skin deep Marvin Gaye/Kim Weston- What good am I without you Carl Carlton- Why dont they leave us alone Tempests- Would you believe Occasions - Theres no you Karl Mitchell followed (where the **** is Pip), Karl is a long time keeping the flag fling in Dublin, whilst a passion for early R&B he is able to read the crowd and built the buzz with the following: ............. continued in the "read more" bit, just hit read more for even more of what went on and more playlists from John Dunne, Danny Dungan, Pip and Karl Mitchell Jodi Mathis - Dont you care anymore - Capitol Harvey Averne Dozen - Never learned to dance - Uptite The Sweet - Got to have more love - Smash The Artistics - The chase is on - Brunswick Barbara - Acklin - Just aint no love - Brunswick Bobby Womack - What is this - Minit The Flirtations - Natural born lover - Josie Billy Sha-Rae - In gone - Spectrum Cindy Scott - World of happiness - Virtue David Ruffin - You can come right back to me - Motown Lonnie Lester - You cant go - Nu-Tone Johnson Sisters - I found my place - Broadway Lou Johnson - Unsatisfied - Big Top The Miracles - If your mother only knew - Tamla Paris - Sleepless nights - Doc Deon Jackson - Ooh baby - Carla Debra - Whats it gonna be - Gree-Jack The Orlons - Envy - Cameo Rosco&Barbara - Could this be love - Old Town Jimmy Ruffin - Everybody needs love - Soul Martha&The Vandellas - Love guess who - Gordy Little Gigi - I volunteer - Decca Faye Crawford - So many lies - Rca Ruby Winters - Better - Diamond Young Pip is a relatively new recruit to NS but brings a lot of enthusiasm and a young fan base, finally got underway with: Parliaments - A new day begins Remarkables - Is the feeling still there TIm Rose - I got a loneliness The Performers - I cant stop you Brothers - Are You Ready For this Carlettes - Im Getting tired Barbara Mercer - Call on me The Sharpees - Tired of being lonely Soul SIsters - Think About The Good Times Howard Tate - Baby I love you WIllie Mitchell - The Champion Garnett Mimms - Look Away Barbara Dane - Im on my way Ronnie Love - Chills and Fevers Jimmy Robins - I cant please you Garnet Mimms - Prove It To Me Etta James - Seven Day Fool Younghearts - A little togetherness Benny Spellman - Fortuneteller Idle Few - People thats why Herbs - Never Never Jimmy Ruffin - Gonna give her all the love I got Danny Duggan followed with: John Bowie - Your Gonna Miss a good thing Del Larks - Job opening Ben E King - The Record Salvadores - Stick by me baby Turley Richards - I feel all right Contours - just a misunderstanding Isley Brothers - why when love is gone Four Tops - shake me wake me Jackie Wilson - ive lost you Laverne Baker - im the one to do it Terry Callier - look at me now Marvin Gaye - come get to this Mel Britt - She'll come running back Garland Green- Girl I love you Four Perfections - I'm not strong enough Spellbinders - help me Epitome of Sound - You Don't Love Me Larry Santos - You got me where you want me Majestics- I love her so much it hurts Four Tops - I got a feelin Ad Libs - New York in the Dark Gladys Knight&the Pips - Walk in my shoes Marlena Shaw - Wade in the water Jean Carn - Like one Fortson&Scott - Sweet Lover Garland Green- Angel Baby Finally John Dunne another Dublin stalwart manned the mike for the finale and lifted the crowd in his usual way. 8. As a soul fan, I am shocked at what I had sent to me this morning from a member of a soul/Belgian popcorn/ Hi-energy music message board called ANS. If it wasnt enough to stomach, that the majority of the DJ line up was dreary and the music was "old hat" real soul records are now being banned and considered "not good enough" for thier brand of Northern Soul. Gene toones, arguably, is probably the best record ever made. Read on, a true shocker : Gene Toones - What More Do You Want TOO EARTHY FOR THE ROCKET Bud Harper - Where Ever You Were TOO EARTHY FOR THE ROCKET The Martells - Where Can My Baby Be ELVIS PRESLEY SOUNDALIKE. WORSE THAN KURT HARRIS. A C Read - My Babys Been Cheating WAY TOO EARTHY FOR THE ROCKET I rest my case..... Ian Levine Moderator - Advanced Northern Soul List. This must be an horrendous wind-up

  11. Well more than likely read the reports on last Saturdays Soul Nite at Yorkshire Riders Halifax, with guests Guy H and Andy Dyson, almost can be sure its going to be a good quality nite of rare soul. Well thanks to Shirley for letting us use her words on the night, which makes a well entertaining read. Includes full playlists from Guy H , Andy Dyson, the three regulars Colin J, Alex J, Eddie E, and John Purvis. And thats not all, starting off with a bit of a viewpoint which am sure many promoters out there can identify with, and then moving onto the actual nite, a great write up by Shirley which to me gives great feel of the nite Not just a review more of an adventure ...and check out those playlists, defintely a outbreak of worthwhile quality rare soul all over the UK this weekend, who needs cheese when you can have cavair! Hit that read more to ......read more! YORKSHIRE RIDER 13TH April02 Warning - Get kettle on, this is a long one ;-))) This is a review of Saturdays soul night but if you can just indulge me for a sentence or two, Im just going to start off with a bit of a moan, about running a soul nite, and I guess any sort of soul venture in general. Do any promoters out there recognise any of this or is it just us making hard work of it:- You can put your heart&soul into organising a soul nite, but become so stressed sometimes, that you lose sight of why you were doing it in the first place. Well its been a bit like that with the Yorkshire Rider Club in Halifax. Over the last twelve months or so weve hit all sorts of problems, including low attendances, faulty in house sound systems, and moving venues to where we are based now. Truth is (and Im sure there are plenty of venue promoters who will vouch for this) it sometimes seemed like a lot of hard work for little or no reward - and Im not talking about monetary or status gain. We started this venture because we love soul music but we wanted to go to a soul night somewhere in our area that would play class northern soul music that we didnt hear often and the only way to do that was to run our own night, so from a selfish need grew a selfless task. Starting this enterprise has taken its toll on our financial and mental resources; weve hit low spots when we wondered why we were bothering at all, but weve always had the encouragement of a few loyal supporters of the venue who told us to stick with it; they said it just takes time to get a new venture off the ground. Well on Saturday night it finally felt like we turned the corner. (Moan over) Sometimes you just know when its going to be a good night and April 13th was just what Northern Soul is all about, it was a night when everything just fell into place, the crowd, the DJs, the music. Even the bar staff (who usually sit playing cards in the corner when weve had a less than successful night) commented on the tangible atmosphere created in the room that night.I knew the DJs guests and residents) would provide the music, but that doesnt always mean youre in for a good night.Ive been to venues where theyve had a cracking DJ line up, but the crowd just werent up for it, despite the good tunes coming from the turntables. It takes other elements to weave the sort of magic that creates a memorable night, and (this isnt as callow as it sounds) I knew the gods were smiling down on me when Karen hobbled in on a pair of crutches with her other half Kev, they had come over from Cheshire for their Saturday night soul fix but as they know I just lurve to dance and Karen obviously wouldnt be up to any backdrops that night they offered to run the door for me enabling me to get out on the dance floor and strut my funky stuff;-) Selfish I know but what can I say, the offer was made and I took it up ;-) In my defence, I did reciprocate by dancing to tunes Karen said she would have danced to in other circumstances, ok, ok I know I would have danced to them anyway ;-)) Thanks guys - it was much appreciated. Thanks to Chalky for trying to teach me gibberish or was it the other way round ;-) and to Mark for the lessons in hieroglyphics (Guy&Andys track listing) and also for acting as photographic director ;-) and to everyone who came from near and far to make it such a great night. 17. Special mentions to: All the DJs for choosing so many fantastic tunes, and for noting them down so thoroughly on the play log so we could get through the whole night without any repetitions - and good call to Dawn and Keith for playing two different records both called "Dream Girl"! The PA suppliers who set up a fantastic system that overcame the problems we experienced in February and really let the music shine. The Camden Centres management who did so much behind the scenes to smooth what is a pretty complicated event to put on. Dawn, who kindly gave so much of her evening up to sort out problems that were none of her making (and even sacrificed some of her DJing time to do so). Janine (Soul Talker) and Sarah (non-Soul Talker) for help above&beyond the call at the end of the night. All the people who helped spread the word about the club And once again, everyone who came along to enjoy the sounds and made it all worth it! Here goes!
