  3. News of an upcoming release available for pre-ordering right now from Creative Soul Records from Cliff Steele aka member @Wrongcrowd Ruby Winters - I Can't Help But Love You / If Only (We Had Met Sooner) - Creative Soul 1001 After much sleuthing it was incredible to have confirmation from George Kerr that he was the creative genius behind a track that blew me away on first hearing some years ago. It’s with thanks to the kind permission of George that we can now share some of his magic as a limited vinyl release. Ruby Winters – I Can’t Help But Love You / If Only (We Had Met Sooner) will be available to order from Creative Soul Records on August 1st, mailing from 13th August. Due to be released on the 13th August this Creative Soul label debut is a strong release, sleeve notes follow below... George Kerr and Ruby Winters were riding high in the US R&B charts in 1967. George had hits that year with The O’Jays and Linda Jones; Ruby had scored a hit for Diamond Records with ‘I Want Action’. George’s production talent brought him to the attention of Diamond Records, and was introduced to the label owner, Phil Kahl by his friend Teddy Van, who was a staff producer for the label. So the scene was set for a pairing of these two immense talents, and recording sessions were scheduled to include another of Diamond’s artists, Johnny Thunder, who had previously recorded duets with Ruby. Recording studio time was expensive, so rehearsals were arranged at Harlequin Studios, West 46th Street, New York, which George fondly remembered as being his ‘go to’ studio for pre-recording rehearsals. The recording session followed at Allegro Sound Studio, 1650 Broadway, New York. The musicians involved in the session reads like a who’s who of black music talent, and included Eric Gale (guitar), Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie (drums), Cornell Dupree (guitar), Richard Tee (piano), and Margaret Ross (harp). Background vocals were provided by Richard Poindexter, Robert Poindexter, and George Kerr. The magic of George Kerr’s production and Richard Tee’s arrangement resulted in just one 45 release, ‘We Have Only One Life’. George recalled that he had Ruby listen to some of his work on Linda Jones to demonstrate the sound he was looking for, and several of these songs were recorded in the session, ‘Last Minute Miracle’, ‘I Can’t Help But Love You’ and ‘If Only (We Had Met Sooner)’. Here for the first time on vinyl with kind permission of George Kerr are two of those tracks. 6. Out now the latest book from Stuart Cosgrove, renowned professional journalist, broadcaster, award winning author and long-time Soul Source member Hey America!: The Epic Story of Black Music and the White House Continuing his examination of American soul music, this time the focus is on 'the complex relationship between American music and politics'. 'An erudite and deeply passionate dive into the complex relationship between American music and politics' - Sean O'Hagan, The Observer Publishers release notes Hey, America! is the story of how black music came from the margins of American life in the early twentieth century through to the mainstream under Barack Obama’s presidency and then was mobilised as a force for radical opposition to Donald Trump’s presidency. Embedded in the story is the triumph of black music over the many forces that had held it back – racism, segregation, undercapitalised record labels, media discrimination and political anxiety. Opening with President Obama’s tribute to Prince, the author takes us through the spat between Louis Armstrong and President Eisenhower, Eartha Kitt’s encounter with Lady Bird Johnson, the Vietnam War’s influence on soul, James Brown’s flirtation with Nixon, the impact of Hurricane Katrina, Ice-T’s ‘Cop Killer’ scandal, Public Enemy and the rise of hip-hop, the Washington Wives versus ‘porn rock’, Kanye West running for presidency and many, many others. The book concludes with the dramatic stand-off between Trump and the Black Lives Matter movement. 15. Another day, another first of the month... August 2022 25 years ago, the summer of 1997, the Soul Source website was first published on the internet As always the plan around this time of year is to mark this anniversary occasion with some sort of event/post/happening But as always with this plan, the event kind of sneaks up on us and as just not enough hours in the day the plans never really come together. However, as this time it's a bit of major landmark, a few things will occur that will reflect/mark this 25 year landmark Anyway for now as it's the first of the month, just a quick initial note to mark this event, and pass on thanks to all who have helped us reach this landmark over the years. 20. Masterpieces Of Modern Soul Vol 6 is released today (29 July 2022) Masterpieces Of Modern Soul Vol 6 - Various Artists Genre: Modern Soul Label: Kent Format: CD Catalogue Id: CDKEND 512 The latest release in this much-acclaimed series offers a great deal, with an emphasis on quality including12 previously unreleased tracks. As always, the cd comes with an informative 16-page glossy leaflet, with photos and notes by Ady Croasdell (see below for preview scans) Release notes from Ace Records follow below Release Notes The latest volume in our acclaimed Masterpieces Of Modern Soul series is as strong as ever and drips with brand new, old recordings. An amazing 12 tracks are previously unheard and a further two are very different versions of already popular numbers. Some rare-soul household names have new material featured on here. Ronnie McNeir hits a wicked dance groove with ‘Let’s Make A Move’ and Dee Ervin offers a superbly soulful ‘You Make Me Happy’ – sure to become a modern classic. The lesser-known Joe Graham’s ‘Higher Than High’ is already halfway there, thanks to advance plays in Europe from DJ Dave Thorley. It’s from an Atlanta session around 1976, in-between his Chant and later Hotlanta releases. Jean Shy is a highly-thought of artist who recorded firstly in Chicago and later in L A. ‘What Tomorrow Brings’ was cut in the latter city, under the auspices of Kent Harris; it’s a very classy midtempo jazz-infused number. Ramona King had her best-known records in the 60s but ‘Happy Times’ was recorded in the Bay Area’s GSR studios in the 70s and is a laid-back gem. We’ve drifted into the late 70s / early 80s disco sound with numbers found on tape that were just crying out to be heard. Joe Simon cut the unknown group Cynic on ‘I Want You’ at Spring early in 1982. Detroit’s Exportations very catchy ‘Second Time Around’ and the equally fast, funky and fantastic ‘Have A Good Time’ by Atlanta’s Maggabrain were laid down in the late 70s as was Fox Fire’s ‘Don’t Play Me Cheap’. The early 80s is the likely era for Melanie Burke’s ‘I Can’t Turn You Down’ – which, like the McNeir and Hodges James & Smith offerings, were Mickey Stevenson productions made in L A. We have lifted three great LP-only tracks from 1975 Fantasy albums by Janice, Betty Everett and Three Pieces: they fit so well into the compilation. Margie Joseph singing a Willie Tee song called ‘Nobody’ is virtually guaranteed to be great music. It is still for sale at a reasonable price - as opposed to the arm and a leg you’ll need to offer for ‘You Done Let The Daylight Catch You’ by Second Re$surection. We found a quite different vocal take for Phillip Mitchell’s ‘I’ll See You In Hell First’ and a much longer version of Dave Hamilton’s ‘Who’ as recorded by the unknown Jackie Dee – it was remixed from the master tape. Another Dave Hamilton song ‘Must Have Had Company’ by Elayne Starr has only appeared on one of the later Dave Hamilton CDs - well worthy of a rewind for modern soul movers. The highly talented west coast producer George Semper gives us ‘Doo Doop Dee Deep Doot Doo’ which owes a lot to the Sly Stone sound of the time and is similarly enthralling. There’s some moody Bay Area jazz-soul from the Karen Sanders Group; recorded in the 70s but only ever available on a 2011 US LP. Finally, we have yet another top quality, unheard 70s soul recording from Joe Hinton who had many tracks abandoned and left in the vault when Atlanta’s GRC records crashed due to the nefarious behaviour of its owner. 22. nope, this is an archive of BBC news clips as per the below The BBC has opened up tens of thousands of audio-visual recordings as it celebrates its 100th anniversary. BBC Rewind provides public access to a “vast portion” of the corporation’s archive. It represents the largest release of digital archive content in BBC history, categorised by the nations and regions of the UK and containing many emotional and powerful stories, many of which have not been viewed since their original broadcast. https://discover.bbcrewind.co.uk/asset/6139d635544c6f002117180b thanks for sharing had a dig with various 'obvious' soul related terms, but not that much shows, but a lot of interesting non-soul local archive video does try searching for your own town to see the non-soul local content or can use the map feature https://bbcrewind.co.uk/map
  23. A new release from Soul Direction imprint Origins The Turbines - We Got To Start Over - (Soul Direction Origins) 1006A Here's the release spiel... Soul Direction Records are pleased to announce the next instalment in the "Origins" family. The Turbines - "We Got To Start Over"/ "What More Can I Say" - (Soul Direction Origins) SDO-1006 Release Date: August 2022 Very little is known at all about the Turbines or indeed the Cenco Label. The almost "David Ruffin" feel to the lead singers voice made "We Got To Start Over" an instant dance floor winner from around the "Top of The World" era of the 80s and 90s to this day and still remains a constant on many wants lists. As you would expect an elusive and rare 45 to own in it's original form. The only other track they performed for the label is the also very rare Fred And The Turbins - "Bernadine" which we assume is the same group with slightly different spelling. This has been a Northern Soul dance floor winner since the late 80s. Soul Direction bring you this first ever UK release fully Licensed from Resnik Music with all licensing and publishing rights paid. This release and many more are available at https://www.soul-direction.co.uk Videos Sleeve Notes Very little is known at all about the Turbines or indeed the Cenco Label. Here is what we think we know: Cenco Records was a Label from Hollywood California, Owned by Mike Gradney (AKA Mike Gradny) Mike Gradney (Gradny), a Los Angeles veteran had previously been A&R man at Larry Mead's Vita/Mambo labels and had managed Mead's Perfection Plastics pressing plant. Gradney supposedly' started his Spry label in 1957 and Cenco came along some time in the 1960s. Judging by the constant appearance of "Class Publishing" on Cenco labels we can only assume Class was also a Gradney company although as far as we know, it was nothing to do with Leon Rene's Class Records. Cenco records ran from around 1961 to 1969 with around a couple of dozen released 45s and one album by Ike and Tina Turner but the connection is not crystal clear although the use of "Placid Music" which appears on some of the Duo's early Sue recordings may be the answer. The label issued mostly bluesy driven songs but there were some odd exceptions including these 2 tracks plus Shades of Jade - "Is It Wrong" and Carbo Brothers - "What Can I Give Her". The only other track they performed for the label is the also very rare Fred And The Turbins - "Bernadine" which we assume is the same group with slightly different spelling. This has been a Northern Soul dance floor winner since the late 80s The almost "David Ruffin" feel to the lead singers voice made "We Got To Start Over" an instant dance floor winner from around the "Top of The World" Stafford era of the 80s and 90s to this day and still remains a constant on many wants lists. As you would expect an elusive and rare 45 to own in it's original form. Notes by Alan Kitchener (Soul Direction)
