Price Check: Ed Townsend "cherrigale"
If it's any assistance as a 'gauge', I sold an Ex issue in 2005 for £25 from my sales list.. Went to a Belgian collector. Only seen a handful over the years and I don't believe it's widely known in UK soul circles. Fingers

Jackie Shane Boot Or Not ?
Didn't listen to the sound clip - the scan was good enough for me.. Two great sides - not expensive - but not an easy number to find. I'd say it's just poor reproduction quality of the scan that gives you concern over the appearence. Fingers

People Who Don't Dance
'Tis true.. seldom will ya see me make any sort of 'real' presence on the dance floor these days. I have enough problems just walking !! I'm not about to profess 'rights & wrongs' etc.. There are none !! It is ALL down to how each individual chooses to derive their own, 'personal', satisfaction' as to how they then choose to express their emotions. Instead.. I'll just relay my PERSONAL slant on the 'topic', thus: There is certainly no 'conscious' intention on my part NOT to dance - Not that I'd ever had reason to contemplate it previously - but I also feel confident it isn't a 'sub-conscious' thing, either. On the 'odd'/'rare' occasion.. It IS (actually) possible to 'catch me in the act' !! Indeed.. at the inaugural night of the Groovesville Soul Club (Hitchin, Herts) - earlier this year - I had to severely reprimand Pete Hullat, - complaining most profusely to him - for being (ir)responsible for invoking a 'Marathon' dance session from me. I don't remember (now), the tunes concerned, but the combination of those three particular 45's DEMANDED I utilise the medium of the dance floor (on that occasion, at least) to release the emotions each of them stirred in me. I distinctly remember - almost half-way through the last of the three - how incredibly HEAVY my calf muscles felt. A feeling I usually begin to experience toward the end of a 'first' dance.. Never mind THREE dances in succession !! I guess that is part of the reason for lack of 'frequent' floor action on my behalf - the lack of sufficient muscle power in the legs. This, I think, gives credence to an opinion expressed above, in the thread. I don't see that as the main reason, though, as to why I am (no longer..) 'viewed' as a 'non-dancer'. For one.. I usually can't remain in one place long enough to achieve a dance - I like to be on the move & flitting here, there, & everywhere (in case I MISS anything ). Additionally, as opposed to the (taken for granted) definition of full-on dancing (usually involving 'athletic-like' limb movements - particularly of the legs) - I prefer to express the emotions that songs evoke in me in much less energetic ways. I suppose the obvious one being through my 'singing' along to the lyrics & mimicking the emotional intent (feeling a 'One-ness') implied by the vocals & lyrics of the records. Another 'common' one (for me) is repetitive clapping to a particular part of a tune. Usually where a musical bridge takes place, or the last three or four bars of the record to fade-out. In-itself, a form of self-emotive 'emphasis' but (nonetheless) a 'personal expression' of the emotions felt - just as rhythmic (or not..) movement(s) of the limbs in tandem to the beat/tempo of music by 'The Dancers' is 'personal expression' Just different forms of expression being the only 'real' difference, methinks. Put a different way: You could use the analogy of the varying ways to relay, say, a 'message': A Telephone ; Sending of an email ; a Postal Letter ; Telegram ; via a Messenger ; or in person.. ALL these 'different' methods are capable of achieving successful delivery - but different people use or prefer different methods !! I know, that - quite 'automatically' (and without chance - or will - to prevent myself) my whole body can become 'hypnotised' by the 'spell' of a class tune. Suddenly finding myself committing acts like 'swaying' from side to side, maybe, or performing 'subtle' movements - be it just an arm (maybe both arms) - perhaps a periodic leg movement to one side, then back to it's original position. Or even just a wrist/hand movement.. All the aforementioned are ways 'I' will more commonly use in 'visually' expressing, MYSELF, to the music I love. This reinforces a sentiment mentioned earlier in the thread - where you DON'T have the control - and before you realise, you're up on the dance floor 'giving it some'. My first visit to Middleton - the Willingham Suite, it was - I remember being located, (rooted, almost) close to the decks as Carl & Maria provided the musical entertainment. I can remember Maria introducing (one of my all time faves - Flash McKinley) 'I'll Rescue You' and, before you could bat an eyelid, I was so 'completely overcome' by this slab of class Soul music that the desire to express myself via 'proper dancing' was totally automatic. A desire executed with such speed I found myself 'on the floor' (doing my 'move to the groove') without even realising I'd covered the distance, from where I spectated, to that of what I'd claimed as 'my floor space' for the duration (located toward the rear of the dance floor) where I haplessly imitated dance moves !! Another viewpoint or observation: When I'm behind the decks - in charge of the music management for a set - again, I just cannot help how my 'person' reacts to the tunes I offer up.. For that hour I may be in command of the turntables, but my body is at the mercy of Quality Soul Music. The music dictates exactly how my body reacts and exactly what it does - whether discreet or prolific - any bodily movement is far beyond my control (not that I ever want to control it.. ). I'll finish my little 'slant' on this topic by stating that I, Honestly, know of NOT ONE PERSON that DIDN'T begin their 'Soul Scene Career' by serving a 'Dancers' Apprenticeship'. Only as the years progress(ed) do/did individuals find their personal 'calling'. With me, it now includes the passion for presenting the music to help sate 'The Dancers' OWN calling. I progressed into various different aspects of our beloved scene.. Areas of interest particular to what 'Rocks MY Boat' - which includes the privilege of 'Disciple' duties - aiming to be a 'Good' servant of our 'Church' and help spread 'The Gospel' by delivering 'Sermons' to abet the 'Spiritual Satisfaction' & gratification of each & every 'Congregation'. To send them onward with 'Inner-Peace' & a contentment.. An appreciative, satisfied understanding of the messages delivered during the 'Service'. Whilst, at the same time, ALWAYS remaining a devout servant myself - striving to learn the lessons of the 'Good Word' from the 'Sermons' presented by other Disciples of Soul. Constantly 'Soul-Searching' & praying for some 'Divine Enlightenment' & 'Spiritual Guidance' toward coming up with 'Toons' to spin that will 'Rock the Boat(S)' of 'The Dancers' !! That old saying : 'To Each Their Own'.. Is sounding more, & MORE, 'CLICHE' - like the cliche it is - with every passing word.. Fingers..

Soul Sams Article In Manifesto
Well.. Reading your posting, Kev, I agree and support your general views.. I respect your 'values', too - which I would think should be quite obvious (in the main) to the large majority of soulies (those on S/S anyway) who, I hope, take the time to read & fully digest your standpoint. As I don't subscribe to Manifesto magazine (yes - shameful, I know ) I am not in a position to fully evaluate your sentiments - Although my gut feeling tells me my opinion would still remain unchanged, regardless - so kindly & respectfully request the article concerned be posted up, and incorporated within this thread. Not just to satisfy MY curiosity upon reading it - to see if my gut feeling would prove to be the case. Rather.. (and certain you would wholeheartedly agree) Upon reflection (in hindsight) the interest of 'fairness' would best be served - and in a 'correct & proper' way - by allowing 'both sides' views to be available for evaluation in their entirety. Unless ALL the facts are lain out - for all to consider - it's difficult to offer support to your stance, or agree/disagree with your feelings. I, for one, (initially at least) think your attitude toward 'the bigger picture' is more-or-less as spot on & complete as it could be - and just as it SHOULD be from the perspective view point of YOUR position (and the responsibilities that go with it) - but one where it is found VERY SELDOMLY (in reality) to be the case !! C'mon mate - get it posted - so's we (and you) can then know that our support for your position is truly justifiable and (really..) SHOULD be the ONLY position adopted by those in similar positions to yours at C.C. Thanx, Kev, in advance.. Fingers..

What a fantastic track - and what a BARGAIN at that price, methinks.. Only 45 format available for this (but not too certain if on an LP, too ??) I wouldn't have minded adding that to my pic sleeve items, but would find it TOO hard to keep it out of my play box !! Fingers..

Taken from - and actually, for me, the'Hook' line.. The one that (I think) 'makes' the disc - Jimmy Phillips on Bumps records.. 'She Belongs To Me' : "Gonna handcuff my baby to me and throw away the key. If my girl decides to leave again.. She'll have to carry me" !! LOVE IT !! Fingers..

Sheri Matthews & Sonny Daye

Sheri Matthews & Sonny Daye
Okay - thanx for that Andy, at least that more-or-less confirms my sentiments as to the Mr 'Dave' Daye, BUT.. Your comment naming the Power labels' Sonny Daye as Frank Wilson - please excuse me for being a bit slow on the uptake (somethings NEVER change.. ) but I just need to clarify things - to make sure I get them right (for the benefit of any future reference). Am I right in taking your comment refers to the legendary Frank Wilson synonymous with Detroit ?? or.. are you referring to Frank (E. ??) Wilson (from the west coast - L.A. ??). I'd always (albeit) 'assumed' the west coast Wilson (I refer to) was more conducive with the Power labels output ?? If I do have that a bit wrong.. does that THEN mean Mr F Wilson (Detroit) & Mr F.E. Wilson are, in fact, one and the same person ?? Sherlie Matthews.. can I ask/confirm - is it she of Atlantic output fame ?? (..and Mirwood !?!) ?? HEEELP !! I'm SOOOOO CONFUSED.. !! My brain hurts !! Sorry for being such a pain Andy.. Obviously - I respect your take on things more than I trust my own, truly abominable, memory.. Be nice to bump in to you somewheres out & about, mate - it's been years, methinks ?!? Fingers.. (and Sue said to say 'HELLO' !! )

A quick update - to let everyone know where I'm up to.. I've pulled a total of 30 potential pieces for my 'short list'. Next is to whittle that down to about half, then get it posted up. They are (purpously) '60's' and (at this stage) no 70's/modern is included - this may change over the coming days and dependant upon initial success with my list of fifteen. First things first, though.. my daughter requires her next intake of calories which requires me to go downstairs to the kitchen & cook her sum fink so - I'll be back soon as.. Thanx Fingers..

Pete.. that is so very kind of you buddy.. An offer very much appreciated and one that, should I require more success than I'm hoping to achieve from on here, I will very graciously accept. Sincerest regards and warmest thanks for your, indeed, ALL, of the upluifting (& much needed) moral support from the oodles & oodles of like-minded soulie type peeps - on this wondrous music scene of ours - that have contacted me with their unconditional offers of assistance.. Their kind considerations toward my present dilemma, and the messages of support & encouragement. I am so very humbled by people's generosity and unselfish attitudes to my current situation. I certainly don't feel worthy of it all. At the end of the day ..'Such is Life' - not that it makes it any easier to deal with - and I am but one amongst THOUSANDS, currently experiencing 'problems. We all have to pay the same bills - mortgage, utilitie, etc. and regardless of the level of income, if it's (say) a fiver that you 'need' but don't have it may just as well be five grand !! The 'mental' anguish is the same for one and all.. Thanx again peeps.. Fingers Thanx Soulies.. Fingers..
