Wigan No.1's
maybe..I'd not been to wigan in a while..so upon my return pushed the boat out & got off my box..heard tim tam, thought it was fantastic, bought it that night, got home, played it & resold it straightaway, a lot of records sounded great whilst at Wigan, less so elsewhere.

Wigan No.1's
Yep, massive in '74..anyone remember ' i hear a symphony' carmel strings..searling said at the time '..one of the most popular instrumentals ever at the casino (in '75) he obviously (neither anyone else) didn't forsee the allniter running til '81.It was played regularly alongside the salvadors/Jades, not a classic but very casino..great niter sound

Souled Out Film Hits Trouble?
Nice.....Respect...sounds like a good job! As I said, I was only going on what my mate said and you have put those worries to rest All it took was an eloquent (not arsey, as many seem to be) reply. Hey, are you the Roxy Thread guy, used to go there myself and Paul Smiths in Notts?

I also found the second copy of Chris cerf which I sold to kev Roberts, Joseph Moore, Enchanters etc, as I'd stopped going to niters by '78, i moved em on for a few quid as unknowns..

Souled Out Film Hits Trouble?
Your arguments against the costume & badges in particular are very vague. As i said I'll resond to q's about costume. In fact I did say pre '75, meaning '74.When you say 'they didn't really care' who exactly are you referring to? Not me thats for sure..If anyone raised a Q to me during the filming it was answered truthfully with reason. I repeat my Q to you (so far unanswered) did you actually attend ANY of the filming, if so in what capacity? Your mate copey may have raised his Q to someone who was unqualified to answer it, & then assumed it wasn't important. For instance when Dave Evison came to DJ for a dance scene (he was off camera) he asked me if I had any more of the bar towels (that dancers used to wipe their sweat, usually tucked into waist belts) I replied we had but as this shot was a close up (head & shoulders)& they wouldn't be seen it wasn't important. He understood, but someone else might have not, maybe your mate copey. As for the baggy trousers, there are several great photos taken from mid '74 that clearly show baggy soul trousers being worn, I was already wearing a pair in '74 & these were available from said tailors plus Roxy threads in Nottingham, plus many corner shop tailors.Of course not eveyone wore them but versions of them were already a fashion staple in the high st, these were not the spencers soul trousers, they came later & were much wider.I repeat, much care & research was taken with regard to costume, but as in many cases, their are always one or two who insist on wearing their own clothing, if they slipped thru the net , I doubt they'll be seen on screen after editing, thats the important thing.I was a regular at the casino for much of 1974, I based my reseach on this & my ( & others) personal photos, my brother & I were partners in a fashion shop & we sold a lot of 'soul fashion' mail order thru Blues & soul, I honestly doubt anyone was more qualified to costume this film, if there are I'd like to meet them!

Souled Out Film Hits Trouble?
Ok! here are some FACTS..not hearsay, rumour, or 3rd hand info.I was the costume designer on 'souled out' filming finished about 10 days ago. I've been a professional costumier mostly on film for over 20 years, also a northern soul fan for over 35 years.I lived & breathed northern soul from around '72-78 although I never lost my love for the music.I first visited the casino in early '74 & was a regular for 4 years. I can tell you that a lot a research went into costumes & particularly badges.I based this on first hand accounts (my own) plus my personal photo/memorabilia archive.Only pre '75 soul badges were used, very good replicas of the originals. In the case of the casino the first maroon rose design & heart of soul.I also took artistic liberty and reproduced a patch ' i'm on my way to see russ & kev at wigan casino' copied from an original '74 design.I used the first allnighter patch on one actor, a patch which although only given free back in Nov '73 to the attendees of that inaugral niter, was seen frequently on bags & clothing certainly thru '74.No actor wore a '77 badge, even the ace moovers inc liam/paul etc wore VA-VA,Torch, Pendulum, patches. Many others used were the ISC patches which were everwhere in '74.If your mate saw a '77 patch it was prob worn by one of the northern soul fans who came as part of an invited party/extras to take part in the filming, in fact I asked several fans to pls change if they had a shirt or top with a post '74 patch. As for the clothing, the central core of the extras were clothed in 28''-30'' bags(oxford) some with 4'' waistbands, based on an original pair I had made by Julian Jelonek, a tailor in mansfield , during the summer of '74.Skirts were copied using an original as a base pattern.Vests & simon style shirts plus original US bowling shirts were the mainstay, many extras brought original items, still with their original patches on & it was fantastic to see them being used again, I remarked on one , worn by a girl who couldn't have been more than 17, her mum bombed over, 'thanks' she said I used to wear it to the 'cats/mecca & casino!'.I can honestly say, to meet many soul fans of my age & share stories was a definite highlight of the filming experience.Another lady lent me 2 x skirts to use on 2 x dancers we wished to feature. Guys like Avon Horden even brought memorabilia & records, & he had a ball filming, even on the non casino scenes. The level of commitment was not just confined to the costume dept but also production design. In summary, I think much of the negative comments are very unfair, we are professional film makers & its not in our interest to make a shoddy film, remember also its not a documentary but a film set against the backdrop (sorry) of northern soul in 1974.Judge it when its out, & for those who don't give a **** simple, dont go & see it.Hope this clarifies a few things, I'm more than happy to reply to any q's relating to costume on 'souled out' but not any other matters! regards Elvis davis

N/soul Clenched Fist
This guy malc, & jim g have it down pat! Also Dave Godin regularly ended his soulful sermons with 'keep the faith..right on now!' and although soul patches had been worn before it must've been the Torch/Chris Burton/ISC that brought them to the fore, wonder who designed the original 'Torch' patch & the familiar black fist ones with all the various slogans? i think they even tried to muscle in on Wigans patches.... what was the first ever official soul club patch, I know of the gold thread type Wheel examples but were they procurred after it closed?

Casino Summer '74 Who Are These Guys?
This pic has probably been researched before but being a relativley new member I'm unaware of previous thread. So, I remember these guys from the Casino's early days, I first visited in Apr '74 & approx a dozen more up to the 1st anniversary. The black guy used to hang with Gethro/wolves gang called Will I think? The guy with the beard also had other hirsute pals & I wondered if the whiskers were a regional thing? The guy with white shirt also used to wear a beret with Torch badge, Adrian? The guy with the vest I do't remember so well but I had the V neck T shirt version of the dragonette. These were reg faces inc a guy who also bearded, wore a green John Deere bowling shirt..& earring..who was he? They struck me as ex Torch/Cats soulsters who gradually drifted away (as far as I remember) as the music worsened ( the soussan instrs & pop sounds) The first 12-18 mnths were for me the best at Wigan, after that it started to gradually change as was inevitable I suppose.I often wonder what happened to the northern fans from that early era, I know Gethro kept going for ages & I packed it in '78, would be nice to see some photos, like the one here, of the faces from that time..here's some of me also kevin dutton from around i think late '74 early 75....
