  5. Errr, unfortunately I know him, we share a first name, but it ain't me!!! He's the one at the Ritz afew years back said"hey I know the bouncer, for a fiver each he'll let us in for nowt!" my other two both involve the upstairs cloakroom at Wigan where we used to go for a quiet natter. First-- Sat up there with Pete Tyldesley and a few others when Brian Leah bounces up the stairs 3 at time shouting "It's on! It's on!" "what's that??" aks Pete. "You're crack up mate" came the reply. You can guess the rest. Second--At the time there were some very strong backstreet blueys around ( not that I approve of course) rumoured to contain strychnine. Anyhow this guy is staring in the mirror for a long time. "wassup?" we enquire. " I feel weird" "What you had??" "Backstreets" "It's only the strychnine" I think he's still screaming. Tony

As expected pretty even divide pro & con. I would agree that word of mouth is probably the best form of advertising,... but if they don't come through the door, they ain't gonna talk bout it. ta Tony

Title says it all really.. but do they? As artistic, creative, amusing & clever as those I've seen on here undoubtedly are. Or is word of mouth better.. or a combination of both???? Ta Tony
  13. Two of my favourites Matha Reeves & the Vandellas- My Baby Loves Me and the immortal Tammi Terrell- I Can't Believe You Love Me-- either version with or without Marvin. Tony

Just waded through the whole Black vs White thing and whilst not wishing to pull the scab off that again,I guess in essence you had to be there, it got me wondering from what direction did you approach this scene. Speaking for myself (only) as a wanabee skinhead in early 70 (but never being allowed the haircut) attending youth clubs and hearing the usual stuff,Otis Aretha Motown Stax Atlantic etc. and then progressing to the local discos finding about only 1 in 5 records I heard I liked and after being warned off The Twisted Wheel as a club for Mad Scooter Boys, eventually started buying Blues & Soul and seeing an advert for a Soul Club--The Pendulum-- not a Northen Soul Club mind,a SOUL Club. Anyway we wandered down one night and gues what, we knew not one record. We were however totally f*cked,I mean hooked, for life. But I still considered myself just a soul fan buying and listening to everything I could afford, which wasn't much, including just as much contemporaneous soul material as Rare Soul as it was then called. I never heared the term Northern until I played Carl Carlton --Competition aint Nothing to an old mate who was very much into Soul who said "yeah not bad but its a bit Northen innit?" Oh well Any Road Up Folks Thats my story and I'm sticking to it. Whats Yours(No I aint getting 'em in) Tony

An instrumental that lifted the roof off old Wigwam on its first play, and yes I'm afraid I went overboard with them .ooh those car horns and traffic noises. Yes folks Footsee. On a more soulful note Bob Relf's Blowing My Mind To Pieces-- went intersteller from the off. Beep Beep Tony

  19. Said my memory was fading Mark. Also didn't mention Dave Withers & Rod Shard in Arndale Market or Market Stall on Shudehill that had about 50 copies of R.Dean Taylor "Let's Go Somewhere" on VIP till it got played at Wigan...then it was gone and the one in Stevenson Square. Like I said memory's going Tony
  20. Yeah if we knew then... For example Rare Records used to have lists on the wall of what you could order. Darrell Banks double sider on Stateside say, but again in our youth what didnt we know?? Oh Well <_< Tony
  21. Just out of interest, when you first started buying/collecting where'd you get em from. Deep in the last century (1972) when I first stumbled across Rare Soul,at the wonderful Pendulum,i don't remember too many lists apart from Brian 45 Philips,Soul Bowl(but I think that was a touch later) & the back page of Blues & Soul. In Manchester we were a bit spoiled we had. Ralphs (infamous) Spin Inn Hime & Addison Rare Records & Global, --that wasn't really a shop more a counter in a dusty old warehouse where you would be presented with a list of records at varying prices from £1 up. I bought some nice stuff from there "blind" but I would love to see some of the lists now to see what was missed. Ah memories(already fading) Over to you. Tony

Johnson, hawkins,Tatum & Durr -Your Love-is a wonderful track, played it out last time, got a good reaction. BTW, nobody answered me question yet about who they are. The Chandlers or what? Tony
  25. Just caught part of a documentary on BBC4 all about a Rock & Roll weekender, originally went out in 1990 or so. Anyway it showed a bunch of folks dancing, dressing up and generally enjoyng themselves to exactly the same set of tunes they had cherished for 30some years. Draw your own parallels. Keep the Faith (Patent Applied For) Tonyp
