From what I can tell some of the latter releases weren’t pushed out on demo, I may be wrong, so to all intents it’s a full set with the added extra of 18 additional issues that partnered demos in the run. Add to this the 2 Red label releases for the Modernists. Includes picture and company sleeves. Credits of Cold Feet refer to the Northern Soul Adviser as Pottsy from Aycliffe, great choice for opening episode, but the intro to Frank Wilson was a bit predictable (Strictlyesque!) and the pumped up happy family scene gross! All in all the exposures great, especially the likes of For the Love of Dogs where I note some tunes underpinning the visuals

Matt Brown – Everyday (I love you just a little bit more) – Jar-Val 0004 Ex+ £800 Hampton Swain from Macon, Georgia, was a multitude of things, but mainly he was and entrepreneur, the owner of a very successful car dealership, so successful in fact that it funded another enterprise, a record shop, which in turn provided the platform for Jar-Val records. Hamp as he was known scouted for talent at the many shows in town, using his local Radio DJ status to pick out some of the City’s aspiring artists to record for him. One such artist was Matthew (Matt) Brown, who was to join Hamp and Tee Fletcher for 2 recordings on the label, the first “Everyday” was set down at LeFevre Studios in Atlanta, and later dubbed over with horns at Macon's Capricorn Studio. The second “Thank You Baby” on Jar-Val 006 backed with the equally superb “Sweet thing” was recorded at the Cheshire Bridge Road Studio in Atlanta. “Thank you baby” is a crossover version of Wendell Parkers Josie 970 release. All 3 tracks are very similar in style, with that unmistakable Tee Fletcher influence. So as not to confuse you, it’s the 0004 release I’ve pulled from the boxes, not 0006!, and based on the Vg+ copy that sold a week ago, priced to reflect the improved condition. Just the one Volunteer State monster up for grabs tonight. PM any questions or to reserve, sound file below. Prince Conley – I’m going home – Satellite 108 Ex- £750 ON HOLD Rhythm and Soul of epic proportions. This attractive label was the pre-cursor for the mighty Stax label, founded in 59 by Jim Stewart, probably of Jimmy & Spartans on release 106, and partner Estelle Axton, later to marry Stewart. They moved their operation, which was originally named Capitol from Brunswick to Memphis, basing it in an old cinema, but were forced to take on the Satellite title due to a rival on the west coast using Capitol. Whilst the day to day production was down to Jim, it was Estelle’s masterstroke to open the Satellite Record Shop as the front for sales, not just their own, but other labels used to draw in punters, maximizing their own. This coincided with Conley’s output, but is likely to have been propped up by the success of the 102 release, performed by a popular DJ Rufus Thomas and his unrecorded daughter, one Carla Thomas. Nothing is known of Prince Conley, even after Rob Bowman the author of “Soulsville USA” – The story of Stax Records pleaded in his forward to readers to come forward with any information on Prince Conley to let him know. This remains a rare and now in-demand Memphis 45, and when you consider its 1961 issue date, its R&B qualities are well before its time, superb vocals and a killer organ break, which makes a change from the usual horn breaks so common across the genre. The vinyl, which sports only scattered light marks, plays better at Ex/Ex+. It’s the labels that have some light grubbiness due to play mat action that forces me to grade it Ex- overall. The Solid Gold LP, in itself rare enough, commands a £300-400 price tag. I read that Steve Guarnori spun this very hard to find New York 45 covered up as “Daybreak – I wanna stay”, and the longer LP version, which was covered as the “Patterson Twins” appears on playlists. Strikes me as a very small in-house production, with the writer Richard Watson, being one and the same as the arranger, producer and artist Richard Paradise, quite the jack of all trades!) Connie Stevens – Tick-tock – Bell 922 Promo M- £300 (You’ve gotta give this track credit, its new breed girly Northern, pleasant and graceful, yet holds an edge as it builds chorus to chorus, picking up the pace on this fine dancer) Frankie Lyman & his All Stars – I’m sorry – Big Apple 100 M- £1200 (Everything you want from an intro, storming horn and string fanfare ushering in Frankie’s typically smooth but lilting vocal on punchy backing, all of which makes for a 45 that defines staple “Northern”. Sadly, this super talented artist died from a drugs overdose at the age of 25, but boy did he fit in a lot of ups and downs in that short time. Its thought provoking lyrics laid down in a similar style to Richard Caiton’s biggies. Nearly as good flip side too! Billy had the pleasure of working with Motown’s in house backing girls “The Andantes” on the Mah’s label, lucky fella! Galore – No right to cry – Sack 4361 M- dh £650 A windy city masterclass registered to Vee Pea, or Virginia P. Bland as she’s better known, and married to Milton Bland, the one and only Monk Higgins. Both were heavily linked to a host of Chicago labels, obviously the smaller short lived Special Agent, Sack and St. Lawrence outfits, but also the Chess, Checker, Cadet conglomerate. Vee Pea’s credentials appear on many of these releases either as a writer or publisher. Having moved to Chicago, Higgins started recording for George Learnera at One-derful Records, and prior to St. Lawrence. Whilst at St. Lawrence, he hired his cousin Barbara (Acklin) Hackling as a secretary. Higgins recorded her “I’m not mad anymore” for his Special Agent label. Mamie Galore also relocated to Chicago, signing with Dick Simon’s St. Lawrence label in 1965. Sadly, she passed away in Mississippi back in 2001, but not without leaving us a raft of outings on St. L, Thomas, Sack and Imperial. This 1967 release came on a label occupied with single releases by Bobbie Jean Bland, Tyrone Davis, Lewise Bethune and Don Gardner, all of whom are entrenched in the richness of Chicago’s musical tapestry.
