Yes, and the great thing is that none of us care

25 years on, I aspire to getting back there. But will make do with Bisley on saturday night, off to iron my tank top & practice my swallow dives Col
  3. Thinking about running off a few northern soul Ts. Looking for a few quirky ideas. Not too keen on the following design concepts Record labels - bit dull SSDCT - very dull Black power fist - bit embarrassing Anybody got something a bit different? Potential design attached - posted by Nick Hackett in a completely unrelated thread, is sort of the direction I'm heading.........what do you think? On an almost completely separate note I noticed a couple of people hankering after 'keep it vinyl stickers'. Its fairly easy for me to get stuff like that produced, so if there is a specific design you need recreating, send me the details. I'll run off a few, you send the money to your favourite charity. Lets be having it....

I thought the photo was excellent, obviously staged but still 'captured the moment'

Sounds a good read. Anybody read it or care to review it? A guy called Howard Priestly did some artwork for me in the early 90s. Soul music related illustrations. Never met him, but he was a really good guy to deal with. Wonder if its the same guy? Col.
  6. These 2 may help, alternatively they may make you feel worse than you already do.... regards Col. 25_Solitaires___Fool_That_I_Am.mp3 Baby_Washington___Your_Fool.mp3

That in general is also my recollection. I have only 2 old B&S copies (which I have just re-read) & both columns were not at all controversial, just bland. Which is surprsing because in the 70s I found him annoying for other reasons.

Dave Godin's columns weren't always wordy & pretentious. Sometimes they were just plain dull. "Had a super time as guest of RCA at the Daryl Hall & John Oates concert.............After the show Daryl & John were full of life at their reception, and were highly complimentary about the article I'd written about them last summer, and had some highly complimentary things to say about B&S in general." Blues & Soul Feb '77 Quite frankly thats just not good journalism. Col.
  9. Hi Paul, Sorry to hijack your thread, but I was wondering which artist was least well received at the Casino. Ann Peebles? Col.
  10. Actually been thinking about one for 25+ years. Bunch of us used to hang around together and one saturday half of us made the usual trip to Wigan. The lot that never went all got stayed at home & all got Wigan tattoos. I wish I'd got one - ironic really.
  11. One of the few occasions when having cloth ears might actually be beneficial.
  12. No. Your comment is absolute rubbish. Along with several others you've made recently. I'd suggest you listen to it again. Its a live track recorded in a basement, produced by Jerry Wexler & Arif Mardin in '71. If that sounds too polished & not raw enough for you then frankly you must have cloth ears. On the sleeve notes Aretha Franklin comments "the baddest new sound on the scene" I think she's right, you're wrong. Col.
  13. No please don't do it. That will be the death knell for this site.

Well I disagree entirely with you John.
  15. No you can't. Rumbelows went bust years ago. I used to work for them and may have had a small part in their downfall.
  16. Anyone a fan of 'Just A Minute' on Radio 4? Beep .........Repetition!
  17. Demos or issues? Thanks to everybody for info.
  18. Bit of help with prices pls.... The Cheers I Made My Mind Up/Take Me to Paradise Okeh WD......fair price £50? And is Reggie Garner 'Half A Cup' on an ABC WD really only worth a tenner? Cheers for looking Col.
  19. Alright, you've got a couple of good points there Agree to disagree Col
  20. 'WHAT?' .............a touch hard of hearing are we? 'Why would it be so painful to play a set of instrumentals?'................the pain is that I feel deep inside, the wasted opportunity to lay a quality soul vocal over a searing 4/4 northern back beat. So, what gives with all this purastistical rubbish about Soul music deriving it's direction and 'meaning' from the lyrics?................if thats the question you'll NEVER understand the answer. Col
  21. Ref original post:- Difficult question for me. Similar sort of question would be "if you had a full set of teeth, which one's would you like to pull out?" Too painful to contemplate.
  22. Its right up there with the Newbeats. Surely nobody would actually own up to liking stuff like this. Any connection to the northern scene is surely both tenuous & embarassing.

Very good Rod PMSL Would quite happily debate issue further, but appreciate maybe going a little off topic..... Col
  24. Alright there Jerry? Nice tune.....but this ones better Blows me away....... Col Mark, wouldn't recommend palying it in the car - it brings on acrobatics! 11_Deon_Jackson___You_Gotta_Love.mp3

Seedy cyncism is often under rated. At the other end of the scales you have blind obedenice, dutiful & submissive behaviour. I like to think the two balance each other out. Col.
