  14. Hi Tony Thanks for the advice Record is just Billy Soul on Velvet Sound - not massive price-wise at all - but still fairly obscure and seemingly quite hard to locate Cheers Richard
  15. Hi Paul Thanks for the tip - sure that will come in handy sometime About this 45, I stupidly forgot to mention ... the sticky stuff is dried hard so I guess I need something that will dissolve it (will edit original post accordingly) If you or anyone else has any other tips for dried-on sticky stuff I would be really grateful Cheers Richard
  16. Hi everyone Hope someone can help me out please I have a quite rare and obscure 45 pressed on vinyl (not styrene) There is a substantial amount of tape residue on the vinyl on one side covering about a fifth of the surface area It looks like there was a large piece of sticky tape on it at one stage - I assume something like packing tape or duct tape Anyway the tape was evidently removed aged ago - but there are lots of marks on the label where the sticky stuff was left behind - this residue is quite thick in places and (edit) is dried hard Can anyone recommend a safe method for removing this from a vinyl record please? I had wondered about 'sticky stuff remover' but have no idea whether that woud wreck the vinyl Any advice much apreciated - especially from qualified chemists!! Cheers Richard
  17. Went to see it this week at the Empire cinema in Leicester Square It was on Screen 9 - hidden away at the back of the cinema up two narrow flights of stairs in a room with about 35 seats, and 20 people in! Went with a non-soulie mate - so it was really interesting to see their reaction We both really enjoyed it - it's basically a love story with a background of Northern Soul, Wigan etc Chatted over a couple of beers afterwards about the film - how authentic the 70s look and detailling was throughout - clothes, cars, houses etc. - the use of talc, adidas holdalls, the music I think I probably enjoyed it less than my mate because, as someone who has been into Northern since I was a teenager, I thought there were some cringe-worthy moments in there (the dance-off being one) The main thing that didn't really come through was the size/scale (place and number of punters) and the atmosphere that was the Casino (so I'm told - I was too young to go myself) Overall, if you can see it as a film and not a documentary about Wigan Casino, Northern, your lives/youth etc it's a decent film - and it was entertaining (the main point probably) OK it was low budget - but isn't that also true of most of the music we know and love? Cheers Richard
  18. So now I'm interested in the whole Detroit/Chicago thing here Paul - do you mean Crow was a Chicago label, or that it was a Detroit label linked to Flaming Arrow in Chicago? More often than not when I have seen reference to Crow releases they have been described as Detroit recordings and the label a Detroit label. This includes, for instance, several recent John Manship auctions. Incidentally, the Goldmine CD Tryin' To Make Ends Meet - Rare Vintage Detroit Funk features the Flaming Arrow release of Jumpin' With Popeye by James Havior (Flaming Arrow 46) The James Havior release of Girl, Girl, Girl on Crow 39 includes on the label "Recorded At Magic City Studios - Detroit Mich." (see scan) Or is it just that James Havior was a known Detroit recording on what was essentially a Chicago label? Then, in Keith's Groovesville USA book the address for both Crow and Flaming Arrow is shown as 10049 Terry, Detroit I'm a bit confused now - it's like that Detroit Chicago thing with the Brothers of Soul, B-K-E, Boo, Aquarius etc. Cheers Richard
  19. Found this - Cheers Chalky Richard
