Dave Godin's Funeral
This will take place at 3.40 pm on Thursday 28th Oct at Rotherham Crematorium, Ridgeway, East Herringthorpe Rotherham, S65 3NN. There is limited parking inside the crematorium grounds, so it would be appreciated if you could park your cars on the road outside, unless you have special needs. It would help if we had a rough idea of numbers attending so please contact me on this address ( ady.croasdell@btinternet.com ) with the names of those you think will be attending. The funeral directors are Co-operative Funeral Directors, Clyde Villas, Doncaster Rd, Rotherham, S65 2DA. Tel 01709 828818 who will advise as to flowers, if you would like to send any. Donations are still welcome to The Donkey Sanctuary, Sidmouth, Devon, EX10 0NU cheques payable to The Elisabeth Svendsen Trust For Children And Donkeys. Dave's body will be at the Chapel Of Rest at the above address from this Thursday 21st Oct to Wednesday 27th Oct and there will be a book of remembrance, please feel free to visit if you would like to. There will be a celebratory dance at the Hellaby Hall Hotel, Old Hellaby Lane, Near Rotherham, S66 8FN from 6pm until approximately 12am. Deep Soul music will be played from 6-8pm in particular. A vegetarian and vegan buffet will be available from 8pm. Hellaby Hall is about half a mile to the east of junction 1 on the M18 on the road to Maltby/Doncaster, it's on the left hand side. The M18 branches off the M1 at junction 32. There are frequent trains from London St Pancras to Sheffield and also frequent connections to Rotherham. However St Pancras station is more awkward to get to now so allow 10 extra minutes for that part of your journey. If you book more than seven days in advance you may be able to secure a cheaper ticket. The last train from Sheffield to London leaves at 8.27 pm so you would have to leave the hotel around 7.30pm to catch that; a room for the night may be preferable. Taxis from Rotherham station can be a problem, we have alerted the local firms but you could pre-order one by ringing A1 taxis on 01709 555555. The practicalities over, I'd like to say thanks to everyone on behalf of Dave and his friends for the overwhelming outpouring of affection and respect for this amazing man. Dave often quoted that what lives on after we are gone is love and that's been proved in the last few days. He was always sorry to be missing his own funeral, he suspected it would be a joyous occasion. We'll have to make sure we prove him right. Ady PS There are two stunning obituaries today in the Guardian and Independent, which we're putting on the 6ts website. The 100 + tributes to Dave in the Book Of Condolence on the site are something else too. https://www.6ts.info

Dave Godin
Soul News Announcement Dave Godin died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday October 15th. He had been ill for some time and was fully accepting of his fate, though true to himself he put up a brave fight. Dave was a pioneer of Blackamerican music and soul music in particular throughout his life. The highlights of his endless championing of the cause were his working with Berry Gordy in establishing Tamla Motown as an entity in this country; his passion for, and the coining of, the genres Northern Soul and Deep Soul and his series of four CDs of "Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures" which he claimed were the proudest achievements of his life. He was the world's foremost soul music journalist for many years and wrote intelligently and illuminatingly on the subject, particularly in his Blues and Soul magazine column in the 60s and 70s. His grasp and understanding of Blackamerican social and political life gave him an insightful perspective on the music that made his writing so vital. He was also a renowned expert on films and a passionate Animal Rights activist as well as being a committed anarchist, vegan, pro-life, Esperanto speaker and supporter of the Jain religion. Details of his funeral will be posted as soon as we have them. It is hoped that there will be a celebratory soul dance on the evening of the funeral. Cards can be sent to Dave Godin in memorium 27 Clifton Crescent South Rotherham S Yorks S65 2AR Dave wished any donations to be sent to: Dr Elizabeth Svendsen The Donkey Sanctuary Sidmouth Devon EX10 0NU UK Cheques payable to the The Elisabeth Svendsen Trust For Children And Donkeys We have set up a message board for any thoughts or reminiscences on Dave's life at the 6TS website www.6ts.info The direct link is https://pub18.bravenet.com/guestbook/1467978738 A fuller obituary will be released after the weekend.

If it's who I would think it is, he's probably a good indicator as to the moral values of the venue; ie if he's on they ain't got none. He's never DJed at a 6TS dance and never will.- Nev Wherry(record collection)

I've got the details and will pass them on. Funnily enough she took the photo of my avatar and there's a brilliant one of her at Wigan dancing with a crowd of admiring onlookers and really looking the business.- Records that make you happy

I actually meant happy as in smiling with great joy and buzzing all over with positive vibes. I know its personal but I can't see how say Dena Barnes or HB Barnum could elicit that type of emotion but it must be different strokes for different folks.- bobby valetin wanted

I'm talkin' 'bout ones that make you laugh, smile, grin with joy whenever they come on no matter how pissed off you are. The Olympics 'The Same Old Thing' Mirwood The Pageants 'Make It Last' Groove Gloria Jones 'Run One Flight Of Stairs' Sensations 'Demanding Man' Jerry-O 'Karate Boogaloo' Actually there are even more pop ones; Slaughter & The Dogs 'You're A Bore', Young Rascals 'A Girl Like You', Housemartins, 'Sheep', Beach Boys 'Wouldn't It Be Nice', They Might Be Giants 'You're Not The Boss Of Me', Smiths 'Panic'. Come on everyone "Hang the Dj, Hang the Dj, Hang the Dj".- 'Big money' sounds of yesteryear
Minsh paid £50 for the second copy of The Fuller Brothers at the Torch when i was there, so that must have been about top whack then. Ian "Frank" Dewhirst paid the ubiquitous £180 for "Cigarette Ashes" a week or so before it came out on Jay Boy in 1972 so the top price rose quickly then. I think £180 was loads more (£100ish)than the previous highest . Mick'll remember a load of others.- Pat Powdrill
Could anyone lend me 'Do It' or do a high res scan of the flip. Mail me privately if you can do. Ady- Playing re-releases / re- issues at gigs?
- The Blendelles and the Mylestones
The Blendelles is actually 1972, Cloudnine was getting it mixed up with La La La La La. Ady- New TV Drama about Northern Soul
There was a stinker of a play about Wigan in the 80s where the main geezer came on all sexy in the Casino and half-raped the heroine. He must have got his Viagara prototype mixed up with his blueys. It was incredibly bad in every respect, and went out on one of the terrestrial channels as satellite wasn't around, so it would have had a lot of viewers. I think it was probably over PC even for that time, in that it's theme was all men are bastards. AdyAdvert via Google
