  1. Paul Anka - I Can't Help Loving You, Released in 66 I would have thought that may have been played pre 73,Or maybe not ??, Malc Burton will know.
  2. The first link needs a password,Use the 2nd one, As you say Chalky nothing new,But it would make a change from looking at the duty free pages, Anyone know who is in the photo's
  3. The only one I ever had was The Pointer Sisters "Send Him Back" / Bobby Paris "Night Owl" at the time it was the most I'd ever paid for a record £5 -- 1975, Got it from a lad from Huddersfield (no name sorry),who used to Dj at the Friday night "Disco" at the old Radcliffe civic hall

I started going in Aug / Sept 76 and it was 12.30 then,For the life of me I can't remember how much it was to get in though
  5. I remember this "Best Disco" in the world it was featured in B & S, As stated earlier in this thread it was "Awarded" on the premise of having the biggest membership of any "Disco in the world",This I would pressume was based on the fact that membership was free and it was advertised in B & S every week as being free,50,000+at the time of the award if I remember correctly, How many of these members ever went to the Casino is a diferent matter all together,I myself knew loads of lads and girls who had memberships who never got past Bolton bus station because they would have missed the last 52 bus back to Radcliffe, One in particular would get up on a Sunday morning,Just in time to catch the first bus back from Bolton two stops before he got off carrying a box of Pye disco demands,Claiming he had been at the Casino the night before,TRUE He/she may be one of those on here who claim to have seen and heard everything that happened at Station Rd,I did not I never saw that couple shagging on the piano I never ever knew anyone who got busted by the DS I never heard the doorman shout stop pushing at the back And I never ever got a fresh meat pie or a cold bottle of orange from the balcony bar.
  6. The Wilson comment was a mere name drop, The point I was trying to make was / is, That many people download music Soul reggae ska rock etc etc, The point once again is "Do You Download Music" If you do then we will call an end to this conversation, I was not in any way accusing you of piracy, I asked in my original post "Let those without sin cast the first stone", You stated that you have downloaded music from the internet,Via E - bay or what ever, So you have,Or have you not ???? Is it ok to download a song so you can remember it, Did you know it in the first place ?? Or are you after a quick buck or two via a sell on???? Once again i will quote yourself "Give me a Foooking break"
  7. I will give you a Foookin break, Good song called "One In A Million" But you do and have dowlnoaded music on your computer, I rest my case
  8. Not read all the post's on this subject yet, We all taped top of the pops etc,And maybe even copied the tapes to our mates,It was the law back in the 70's, If you look at my most recent play it is of Mr Searling live, Taped by someone at the Casino, Lots of copyright laws being broken by many a person,Starting with the person who taped it,And the person who uploaded it,And would this site also be guilty as charged of allowing this recording of "Copyrighted music" to be available to listen and possible download, Or shall we carry on "The holy grail" of it's our music,,Many a post on here about singers and writers getting their (Money) etc."Let those without sin cast the first stone" Ladies and Gentlemen "The Strange World Of Northern Soul" Vinyl or CD or Mp3, if an Mp3 of the original Frank Wilson (and you knew it was real) was available for free !!!, Would you download it ???? If the answer is no,Then you are a liar, We all download,And you know you do, From Abba to ZZ & Company Got to go now the Soul Police will be banging on the door soon!!!!

Thanks for your reply to my post, Yes you are very correct in what you say,And I agree with you, I very much doubt that the "Dustbin Stanley" Crew will agree with you or I, But if there is someone to kick,Rest assured they will kick, The Wigan Nighter was started by Russ and that be the truth, Like it or not !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once again quite a few very anti Russ Winstanley comments on this thread, Nice to see so many people(including myself have bought Tim Browns "The Wigan Casino Years") A few lines in that book could also be used in this thread to slag of certain other people also, Russ had his faults and so did a few other dj's at the time of The Casino, Also many at previous nighters, Have a read about certain promoters and artists "Booting" records(at the Torch) in the "Casino Years" , Very interesting reading !! Let old almost sleeping dogs lie, Loved the Casino and I will never forget it,Never saw the bad times,For me they did not happen, Always a great night,Was not there at the end,Wished I was though
  11. Did yours come with a sleeve cover ?? Mine just simple hard back, Will get the wife to complain,She paid for it back in August !!!
  12. Got my copy this morning looks good, One gripe though it was advertised on pre release orders to come with free single,Did not get mine
  13. , Spent every Saturday morning at the "Nav" as a 12-14 yr old, Then graduated to the Thursday night scene as I got a bit older, It was a right of passage for anyone from the Bolton area circa 72 - 77 Remember seeing the "Bay City Rollers" one Saturday night,The Drifters did it a few times also,Not on skates though Just on the off chance that anyone on here fancies trying out their roller skating skills of yesteryear, Have a gander at this, My link
  14. Start with Candi Staton "Young Hearts" And The Real Thing "You To Me", Then try "Superstition" and then chuck on the Elgins "Heaven must have sent you",Then "The Snake" etc etc etc. Piece of piss, Do it every week when someone asks for "Some Northern" At a birthday,21st,Wedding etc, The above formula should not be put to the test at "Soul Nights"
  15. Hi Jim thanks for your input on this thread, I did not know this when I posted the quote about dj Froggy, Just found this on google My link Never knew him or ever heard him Dj,Must have had a big impact back in the day with the Funky crew R.I. P. Grant
  16. Everyone had a copy of "One Nation Under A Groove" it was the law My next take on this thread is "The rise of the funkateer's" Being from "Oop North" I remember in Blues and Soul & Black Echoes,Reading about the Funkateer's ,Going to All dayer's at Caister, And a club called (I think) The Goldmine at Canvey Island Followers of dj's like Chris Hill, Robbie Vincent,Kojak,The soul twins and Dj Froggy who was Froggy ?? They after a few years(Months ?)Started the party type scene,Loads of whistles and woo woo in the crowds,Leading to the release in the mid 80's of the Steve Walsh records featuring the crowd singing along to "I found loving" for example, The one tune I remember from these times is this one,Pure class in my ears,But was this Jazz Funk or disco, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLKCQq_cDus Whilst I'm at it have another
  17. At the time I was never really into Jazz Funk at all,Just went along to see what the score was so to speak,I was also working as a club dj at the time so It was a way to hear some of the newer "Disco" sounds, A lot of the then "Jazz Funk" went on to become mainstream Disco,So as I worked as a dj it was a way to keep up with the Jonse's, Here's a couple more not mentioned yet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apX9V7Geb9A
  18. Just reading some earlier posts and at No 7 is the cover of the record plus the £1.99 price tag, Did Heatwaves "The Groove Line" get plays back then(At jazz funk venues)?,Before it was a hit in the commercial clubs
  19. What a tune that was, Was it not released at one time on a 12" four track called "Turn on the tap" from Tappan Zee records, What where the other 3 tunes on it?? I can recall a tune by Richard Tee(I think) on it,Can't remember the title though
  20. Remember the Charles Earland track now really very funky Disco type dancer same time as Hamilton Bohannon "Lets start to dance" Peter Brown "Do ya wanna" class tune, Used to play a lot of the others back in my dj days,I used to get laughed at when I played "Rise" on 45, The Sine track was a biggie about 78 ish I think, Many of the tracks you mentioned crossed over to the more commercial clubs(Disco's),Loved "Morning Dance" Anyone remember this one
  21. I tried out a few Jazz Funk nights back in the day the main one being "Rafters" in Manchester, Loads of New York Disco type guys and girls all doing what they did at the time,Lots of sandals and zoot type pants, I never really got into the music though, I can only remember two tunes that stick in my mind, Do they ever get played at Jazz Funk nights nowadays, The start of this one is fantastic,Just good and different The next one from Wilton Felder,Still sounds good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diNcTybdVyw Anymore out there ??
  22. Told this once before here on SS Many years ago about 91-92 I was managing Legends nightclub in Preston and I booked Edwin for a playback show (no live band just backing tracks) Before the show I sat and ate chicken tikka with him and talked about the Northern Scene, He was truly and utterly in debt to this scene in his words "It kept me alive and it fed me" The opening of "SOS" brought him on stage and it was electric,Half way though his set Edwin seeing me dancing at the side of the stage,Asks me to join him and tells the crowd "This is how to dance", And then "Conact" starts up and so I dance on stage with Edwin Starr singing and stood next to me(to be honest I never liked Contact it was a disco track to me but if Edwin says dance,Well what more can I say) The most memorable part of the night half way through his set,Some blokes start shouting that he is miming, Edwin hears it and says "Stop the music" Yeah you're miming say the blokes, Edwin replies "I've NEVER mimed in my life,What do you want me to sing,I will sing anything" At the time the Passadenas had done a version of "I'm doing fine now" Well Edwin sang it live with no backing track, ELECTRIC, Hairs on the back of your neck stuff, Taken for granted?? ,Maybe Forgotten NEVER
  23. Never a truer a word as been said Phil, Time a few folk's started to smell the coffee
  24. I would have thought hat Milton Wright was a bit earlier than 76,I prefered "The Gallop" to the vocal version tho, I could not stand "Linda & The Funky Boys" at the time,But I came across it on you tube a few weeks ago and really like it now Florence Devore I had completely forgot about that,Just youtubed,Stil sounds good, Remember watching the really good dancers timing their spins to Stop right in the break on the Bobby Diamond track
  25. Was Vicky Sue not 77,(Just googlied it and it was 76) Doris Jones and Barbara Pennington remember hearing them,Never heard "Doomsday" at Wigan myself tho, A few Mr Levine tunes in that box of yours Phil, Was Doris released in the u k on the Nemo label or was it Nero ??, I really thought a few of these were not as old as they are, Bugger and bollo* it's the brain that goes first or so they say Grant
