Well, thats mainly because you can get the first release on Mah´s at a mere 20 UKP top...and it really ain`t agood Northern record at all. Although it is a fantastic Group record

Not to forget Steve Z´s sets at the Greatstone...this man really turns up amazing stuff, be it semi- or yet unknown. He was the first to air the Overtones, Five Chances, Ebonies on Bedford, Mamie Perry, that nice little thingy on Bumps and the list goes on and on...a shame he ain`t posting on here anymore...

Of course it doesn`t matter where 45s are spourced from (as long as it stays legal of course ) but a big collection such as his surely helps you to have "one or two items" already at home that have or will become "hot" items. Even if you only use them to sell them at their peak to buy sth else (which Butch of course is not doing). So, a collection helps and I am sure it is no wonder that people with such amazing taste and plays such as Tim, Andy Dyson and Butch have such big collections. If you look closely who just follows the current taste dj-wise and who instead always belongs to the group of trend-setters who "invent" new plays you will soon find out it is most of the time the before mentioned people. Of course you can also go to the dealer of your trust and pay a high sum for an unknown title when you haven`t got the backbone of such a collection. Nth wrong with that and (nearly) the same "respect" is due if the new tune is cool

Maybe I got the term "hot boxer" wrong then...but to me a typical "hot boxer" (nice term..) is somebody who has a very limited collection or even none collection at all at home except for his play/dj box (in order to always have the cash to buy new stuff for his/her "hot box"). Butch of course with his 40.000 Soul 45`s in his home is far away from being a hot boxer as he ain`t selling anything that he hasn`t got two copies of. I am dead sure that if he would have been a hot box DJ (and for that reason would have never kept on to anythingt except his at that date current plays) he would never have become that a great DJ that he is

The simple point is that he was around to buy all the stuff "cheap" when no one really cared and took care of things that were around but not collected by anyone as they were not indemand. By doing so, be it in Japan in the days when nearly no one else had contacts there, or at John Anderson house, he was able to build up one of the very best collections ever which of course helped him to become what he now is, the worlds number one. As he is not a follower of the "hot box theory" and has loads of stuff piled away it is very likely that the next big thing is in his collection already if he himslf is not even the person to have made it the "next big thing" anyhow. Add to that one aspect JT already had lighten up, the fact that he is one of the very FEW people who are willing and dare (!) to buy and test something new of course all dealers in the uS and UK know who to ask.. And finally, if there`s a 45 he wants and hasn`t got there is now way you are going to outbid him for example on ebay or whereever...as he doesn`t take no mess...
  11. Oh my, I am definitely not looking hard enough

...I think thats why we all talk about "...known copies". Thats why threads like this are so helpfull as already some collectors put their hands up telling us that they have a copy of this and that. However, I do agree with you that there are so many unknown collectors out there who do not dj, use the various forums or even remember what they do have at home that of course there are many many rarities tucked away in collections we do not even know about. For example I just heard last night about an Arthur Willis copy....which will be "available" maybe soon

The multi-coulored is the rarer of the two options. Shouldn`t cost more then 250 UKP though
  20. Another point to be added is that the acetate shows handwritten release numbers...which none of the original Jobete acetates had. As an acetate is normally done before the release, obviously no one would be able to know already the release number...this plus the known facts about the company itself (year of foundation etc.) lets me to believe that this acetate is as much authentic as the one from the same manufactory that had J.D. Bryant (Washington) on one side and another big (Detroit) rarity on the other side...that was on ebay some years ago... As the seller had some great early Detroit 45s up for auction I tend to imagine that the guy he bought the stuff from had this plate done to fill the gap in his collection as the Contours and especially Chico Leverett are two really dog rare Motown pieces. I bought my Chico about seven years ago and never saw another one...talking of rare Motown items I am really surprised to see that Saundra Mallet is still only at 10 UKP .... rarer as the Contours IMVHO (no matter which of the two released versions). Marc
  21. Well, reminds me on the last record fair I did over here...deejayd the night befor eto be woken up by the door bell at 8 in the morning...no breakfast nu lunch...only STANDING behnid my records...the table next to me sold a reocrd every five minute (East German -GDR- pop 45s...) and me I did not even sell one single 45! Suddenly I sold one at 15 Euros...only to hand over the money to the promoter the next minute for the table rent...never again. I prefer to go with me beloved one on sunday for a walk across town and wood... Marc
