Agreed, unless (as has been stated before, which you touch apon in your post) somone is breaking a new tune. It's a rare occasion nowadays, but there's nothing better than hearing a D.J saying "First time out for this" ....then 'underlining' his set with the same record again - especially if he does it right, and has a packed floor to it the second time - Great stuff All the best, Len

The risk of repeated tunes is reduced if a night is made up of D.J's with different identities (their own preferably) I know there's many Jocks out there that could quite easily turn up 5 minutes before their spot safely in the knowledge that more than likely, none of their tunes would have been played, and that's not because they have a box of 'one off's. These people wouldn't do the turning up 5 mins before their spot thing anyway; these are the sorts that go to nights whether they're D.Jing or not, so would be there reasonably early because it's their night out. Try again mate - I'm eating my lunch and want somat to read All the best, Len

It's amazing how a repeat tune is REALLY noticable isn't it? I think I'm correct in saying that 'in the old days' some tunes were repeated more than twice in a night, and that it didn't matter because they were relatively fresh back then. I'm pretty sure I would have wanted to hear 'Eddie Parker - I'm Gone' at least six times in one night as a teenager I'll 'name a name' as this is a compliment - I was D.Jing in a second room a few months back, and Rob Smith was on after me. He of course had his record stall which was situated in another room, so he didn't know what had been played, so he asked if he could see what I had played. I handed him all the records from my spot, so he could flick through them. He then went on and started his set 'keeping with the theme' - All very professional I thought......Wasn't sure what to make of his comment "So you're Lenny Dopson are ya?" though All the best, Len

True. All the best, Len

Actually, I’ve just remembered something - A while back I was at ‘an event’ where a well-known D.J was explaining to me (all matter of fact like)......“If ‘so and so’ is here I know he’s gonna play ‘this and that’, so I won’t play them, but I’ll play ‘this’ instead" I remember thinking Jesus, if things are that predictable, why D.J? - It certainly wouldn’t interest me. At least he was paying attention, and determined not to do the repeat thing I suppose. As you can see, I’m not one to ‘name names’ etc - I’ll leave that to the older boys All the best, Len

Does this really happen that often? I've often said I think it's 'Northern Soul Folk Law' - Serious question (In a friendly way) I suppose it would a bit 'much' to name where / who / when etc - I've never seen it happen, I must be going to different places. All the best, Len

Yup - Lets here it for 'Soul in the Bowl' aye Terry?! ......that is where you meant isn't it mate? All the best, Len

Due to an unforeseen licencing issue, unfortunately The Bowls Club has had to cancel the All-dayer we had planned for June 15th at Rushden. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused, The Bowls Club and ourselves are very disappointed as so many tickets have already been sold, but unfortunately we have no choice in this matter. The good news is that we are able to carry on with the Soul Nights, dates being April 13th, Sep 14th, and Nov 16th. Tickets If you have already bought tickets, obviously a full refund will be given. But as a gesture, you also have the option of using one ticket for two people’s entrance to any of the Soul Nights this year, or one ticket for two nights entrance, saving you £4.00. For a full refund or any other info, please call Jem on 07905 028003 or Len on 07970 361219.

Elaborate Script Writing In The Vinyl ,what Is It ?
Len replied to Sceneman's topic in All About the SOUL

Yes, one of the Scenes Legends without a doubt. I’d heard of him years before I met him (which is a tell-tale sign of a legend) I’m glad I met you a few times, and even think we ‘clicked’ in that ‘nighter world’ of ours. R.I.P Len.

Yeh...careful there, we're slipping into 'that thing' again ......The point is - no matter what sort of night you put on, it's helpful to 'someone' that a full description is put on the 'events'. Amongst other information - what you play, the type of Soul Music whether it be on Vinyl, C.D's or MP3's - which is your choice whether people like it or not. This is where the full description comes in - then people can make an informative choice as to whether to attend or not. As has been said before on this thread - Most people have 'found their level', meaning that they know where they want to go now. I attend places of which I respect both the Promoter (s) and the D.J's they have playing at any given time, because with that in the 'equation' I'm odds on to have a good night. The full description on the 'events' (in the main) is for the benefit of people trying somewhere for the first time, and it's important that it's there as a matter of fairness to the customers at least. In saying this (with ref to places I attend) Just lately, I've been enjoying places that are so 'over ground', they're 'underground' All the best, Len

Show off Hope ya well mate Len

This isn't aimed at you 'Soul Trafford', but I think some simply 'judge others by their own standards'. All these 'ego's' must be blo*dy huge if promoting gives them that 'fix' because in the main, promoting is an absolute thankless task - Anyone that does it for that reason would soon get bored surely. All the best, Len
-
The only way any friction will ever be avoided, is the day people realise that if a certain kind of event is already catered for, there's absolutely no point in putting another one on in the vicinity - be it the same night or not. Please let me know when that happens, and I will put my umbrella up to avoid the Pig droppings All the best, Len
-
"Numbers were low" - Is the worse way anyone can ever start a 'look backs' post. It's best not to mention it at all, and focus on other aspects of the night. Mentioning that will put people off visiting the event. .....Hang on, I'm giving all my 'promoting secrets' away here All the best, Len

I've had people 'pop' to venues I've run just to give out flyers many times in the past, and it didn't really bother me. They paid the entrance fee, and if they went home early then it was their loss. I did notice though, but just thought it a bit odd / cheeky, none were going to affect my event, so I had no reason to stop them doing it. To 'defend the practise' though, I would fully understand someone refusing flyers that were of a 'rivals' night - When I say 'rivals' I mean someone unnecessarily putting on another night that has a direct effect on the event / future events in question. There's a lot of it about and a bit of standing up for one’s venue is understandable. If it’s simply money orientated, I'm not impressed - If it's a genuine 'soul' sticking up for their event, then power to em. All the best, Len
-
F*ckin’ ‘ell, you’re brave…..I RESPECT YOUR HONESTY….so much better than the frauds that are amongst us mate - I hope your venue goes from strength to strength. All the best, Len
-
......because they're only interested in themselves / their event.....(As you know) ‘For the record’ if anyone ‘out there’ has any doubts about me - ‘Not guilty your honour’ - From next year I’m giving up promoting, because I’m fed up with having to ‘compete’ with all these events. Shame really, because I’m pretty good at it - I'll put any 'efforts' I have left in me into supporting and 'spreading the word' about events that I believe in. All the best, Len P.s - After my 'Northern Soul Gap Year'.......
-
I've sinse had a P.M from John (The thread starter) and know what event he is refering to, so to answer the original question - I think it's because your event isn't a 'run of the mill' soul event. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think it's more of a 'town' event, so the records you have named are most probably unfamiliar to your clientele that's all. As Brian pointed out, no matter how good a record is, some folk won't dance if they don't know it - depends where you go really. If ya clear the floor, don't have a panic attack mate All the best, Len
-
I know what you mean ref 'liberty takers'......I also know what you mean ref you being 'awkward', people don't wanna be told Terry - truth can hurt folk! This may sound silly to some, but the word 'etiquette' yet again comes to mind. When I was a regular 'flyer putter outer' I always used to ask whoever was on the door at an event if it was ok if I put em out. One time the bouncer went to find the promoter to get his permision, which was fine. Later I learnt that they weren't letting people flyer the place if it was for an event within a certian distance radius - Which I thought a good idea, as it may have prevented too many events in close proximity to each other. This was years ago - That's out of the window now big time! (As is a lot of things) All the best, Len
-
That's the 'thing' - It is working well, but for me I only look at events I know about. Before 'something' made me click on events I wasn't aware of. Mike, the poll would be to see what percentage of members have an issue with it, but yes you're right in sayng that if it went back to the old system we would have old issues back, such as 'bumping' threads - I didn't like that particular problem, but maybe it was just that 'problem' that drew my attention to other events. In hindsight - Yes 'Bumping' threads did go on, but that was to compete with the events that didn't need 'Bumping', and those events are the ones I used to get drawn to because people were commenting on them, so were highlighted. All the best, Len
