Good idea there, or maybe enforce a "cooling off period" ? "Sin Bin" for 7 days or so to culprits. However thats for the moderators to discuss, i personally think they do a good job. Again i think its a case of more chiefs than indians, with the chiefs trying to grab a share of the "shrinking" soul reservations, especially in areas where there are masses of nights going on over the weekend. Hard to sort it out, but my advice would be to do something totally different to whats going on around you and build it up slowly with a true dedicated following. Rob
  2. Julian I've still got most of your Blues and Soul mags as well Can you believe thats 20 years ago when I bought them......... "Who is that bloody train driver" is i think what you said mate But they went to a good home ! Rob Ps "On Topic" Chris Marriott paid £100 for magnetics "Lady in green" off Sam at the Palais around 1979/1980 ish-- a weeks wage then ?
  3. right love it I'm going to ask Mike to close the thread today as we have gone way off topic and the Z listers might eventually twig on to this thread. But in the light of what's happened in the last fortnight, with major venue's closing or announcing closure, NSSC calling it a day and several events taking place within close proximity of each other in the same towns, It seems my original post might have been somewhat Prophectic. Right things to do, DJs to "Alphabetize" (ask tats, we once saw the word used in the States) and a weekender to run. Thanks to all who replied Rob & Karen
  4. You'll have to wear your slippers there young fella and all wear bibs , its gone all posh now ! Never clashed with owt in my life (ask Stevie T who he asked to co-promote with him on the Welsh do before i told him we had Brid Booked ) Rob
  5. Up all night again send me your address mossy ive got the Brid programmes i promised you Rob ps i thought this thread was dead
  6. ok two Wheel lads on here ,hello Julian and Brian how much was the Tams "hey girl don't bother me" on ABC when it first turned up ? £5 to £20 depending on who tells the tale, remember £10 was an average weekly wage then. And your Alexander Patten UK demo still resides safely within my collection julian, wasn't that a "20 Quider" in its day ? Rob ps regards to both of you
  7. andrew late in the day but if you know anyone who's going to Bridlington weekender by all means send some up and we'll get them away for you through out the country ! Rob & karen
  8. OK eddie' there's an all nighter running in Burnley at the moment, so you should have a great time , also plenty of "do's" within spitting distance, Rolls Royce at Barnoldswick, Bury Town Hall the greaystone near old trafford, plenty to go to and the Twisted wheel also runs several times a month, but with classic wheel sounds on the last friday -- take care rob
  9. Heard that once on a saturday morning kids programme years ago, thought i'd dreamed it, bet its rarer than mel Wynn now ! i thought it was Brian harvey ? got to have something to do with Ian levine ? Rob
  10. y a didn't write owt ya tea drinkin' lumox ! see ya at Brid if the Dentist don't kill ya first ! Rob & Karen
  11. I think a "Big Bang" is gonna come, also had a thought about Djs and Venues, as my previously posted thread "Too many cheifs". Read comments about 2 venues in the same town same night, which seems to happen in Lincolnshire a lot ? Well when we were all a lot younger "Disco Tackle" was quite dear to buy, over the years i've had loads of stuff bought secondhand of mobile Djs, now this stuff is in your local Argos, twin turntables, mixers, good AMPs (for a local do) speakers etc , so for £500 or so you can get a workable set up PA. Think about it £1,000 records are common place, just like £10,000,000 footballers, we dont blink at spending £300 on a decent 45, its a cheapie ! The tackle to play them has become obtainable to Joe public, so up they set in a hall, a couple of mates and off they go. Bingo a new soul night for your town ! Like I've said a couple of times on here recently, I've seen the wind of change already blowing through the scene and when the former line dancers and hangers on have all pissed off back from whence they came. The "Soul" will shine through and we'll be happy in the underground once more ! LCD = DPUI and thats whats spoiling a lot of do's Rob
  12. Think you need the "Calling all promoters thread"
  13. paul , its a tale about people to be claiming to be "Z" list DJs, a term that was invented by error as a off the cuff remark, in the course of a week and 5,000 hits later we have more z list Djs than A list Djs. I lost the plot on page 3. i must say to all the people claiming to be Z listers, that none of you qualify a) because you're not paying bootlegs or EMIs you know what you're talking about c) your not really running your own do's trying to become noticed I thought the thread had run its course by Thursday, but if you can't pick it up Paul the question was "Are there more DJs than punters?", the answer is "No, not at the moment, but unless things change there will be" two final bits, No one"owns" the scene though many have tried, so you make of it what suits you, if its listening to the Top 500 then thats fine, or if you want ultra rare stuff then thats fine as well. Enjoy yourself and have a good time and I think there may be an opening for a play here Paul , you could call it "Once upon a night onSoul Source or "revenge of the Z listers" Rob ps Loved your play, very observant and the Z listers don't actually releaise they are Z listers national wink day
  14. Hi Chris and Marcelle We have some very special memories of the New Century events, never had a bad one, enjoyed working with you both and your numerous co-promoters and I still think the CIS in Manchester had/ has something very special about it. Maybe all the ghosts of the past performers and being privvy to the vast backstage areas as well gave an insight into your events that many would not normally see. I think you "raised the bar" in event promoting and took it away from back street copy shops and scruffy villiage halls which were the norm before N.C. appeared raising the standard of events generally during the first part of the new Millenium. you also had the guts to bring over live acts, which i personally think was your strong point. good luck in everything you plan to do Rob & karen
  15. he's around in Stoke, but not going out much . His daughter had quite a sucessful Record in the Southern Hemisphere, Top 10 job in quite a few countries, i know he spent a lot of time on that, helping her out. But honestly not seen him for ages, a great bloke. Pm me your address and I'll send your badge when its made , no i'll send you a Bridlington Programme. bet your going down the Coast to Steve's Do aren't you ? Rob
  16. Stick with it and get out when you can, glad your into the sounds, can't fault ya Rob
  17. Hope they get the colour of the drugs right---
  18. One man's A lister is another man's B lister though.. And who can say what ' the right calibre' is for these young DJ's?... Is that like the Northern Soul version of X Factor?... X X X DJS THAT NEVER GET A CHANCE TO CHANGE THE WORLD, THE ONLY WAY TO DO IT IS TO START YOUR OWN "DO"................ARGHHHHHH ! THIS YEARS BEST DJ--TATS, MY OTHER FAVE'S INCLUDE, CLIFF STEELE, ROB KAYE & DEN MaC, DAVE WELDING, MOLLY, SEAN HAMPSEY. STEVE HOBBS......and about 100 others! MOST PROMISING NEWCOMER-- SOUL SAM rob
  19. I'd give you chance Paul, but I want to hear you Djing first, or if you were coming to Bridlington you can start in the 3rd room playing what you like as long as its original and different. There you go Rob ps Don't tell Ken
  20. What happens to the ones who are as old as like your 60/65 and i know you could maybe carry on for what is say 10/15 years or as long as you feel what happens to Northern soul then when there are less DJ's cause all the best ones are well into there 70's and 80's. Won't there be any younger DJ's like i would like to DJ more and cause i am only 27 i have plenty of years left to keep it going but you don't seem to see a lot of people like me DJing it's all about the ones who have been around years and know more about the music Good point, I'd been DJing for 13 years by the time I got to your age, 7 years learning the craft Then running my own event (Tudor Barn, playing across the board and cutting edge with guests proper A listers Soul Sam, Richard Searling, Arthur Fenn and great local collector djs like Rob Marriot, Chris Marriott and Richard Broughton) As I said earlier in this thread I'd gladly give a chance to younger DJs of the right calibre with Original records doing something good but a little different. The last 2 guys I can fit in to this category are Chris Anderton (hello Chris ) who ran Bretby and created a whole new fashion for records like Jimmy Soul Clark Champion" (then a £4 ex soul pack record) and recently James Trouble (hello James ) . I can't wait till the Kids discover the music again, prehaps they should re-make "Quadrophenia" and get a whole new generation into it. by the way, go to the European weekenders if you want to see the young generation dancing to Soul music club 18 to 25 and Well into it !! Rob
  21. On F**ck Tonto we're rumbled, where's Silver ???
  22. Des , why ask the question when you already know the answer, been in any lifts with Beggsy lately ! Rob
  23. A to Z Its happened to me as a DJ locally (I'm DJing) when Ive been called into work or shifts have changed, thats the main reason i stopped taking advanced bookings as a Dj unless I am doing it as a favour and know I will be on the right shift even if i get changed around. Friday nights are really bad. But I know where your at Ted Rob -M- Looks like i've started something with the "Z" list
