  1. Great instrumental, should be in the instrumental thread mate. Used to go down well at the bat cave.
  2. Fascinating thread. Still find it hilarious that so many collectors can't accept that minty originals can still turn up. Have you seen the size of the U.S.A.? Congratulations to the gentleman who has found it. Great record. Just a thought for the conspiracy theorists amongst us. I was chatting with a friend today, we were discussing the new 3D printers. Apparently, someone has made a perfect copy of the Pink Floyd album Dark Side of The Moon. Apart from being a complete waste of vinyl, it does make you wonder just what will be possible in the near future. Scary.
  3. You appear to be in that clique Byrney.
  4. To answer you're questions. Karl was unable to carry on. Cliff and Andy were unable to commit to every month, and as far as I'm concerned those Dj's are irreplaceable. Combine that with the fact that we were all struggling to find new quality stuff to play. Basically it had run it's course. And yes, I'm amazed at the people who attend Sean's night that never came near when I ran it. Could be I'm not one of the clique that more or less run the soul scene. Could just be that I ran it for the dancers and not the people who expected to get a spot there. Maybe I'm just not well liked, who knows. it's history now.

I would have given anything for a copy of this in the early seventies. THE TRIUMPHS - WALKING THE DUCK - Northern Soul
  6. By the way Ady,I must congratulate you on having Andy Dyson on. He's one of the very few Dj's that I would travel to hear these days.
  7. Fair enough Mike, it's your forum.
  8. You are right, I didn't even realise that I was doing that, and I hate it when others do it. I am actually embarrassed that I have done that. But in mitigation, we can only express the things we have experienced, but yes, I apologies for that. I don't actually have an agenda at all. My promoting days are long gone and I haven't been out on the scene for years. I am opinionated though, and can't resist joining in. Just because you like someone, doesn't mean you agree with all their opinions. But on this scene people take that as a personal insult, when that's not the case.
  9. Of course you are allowed to reply to criticism that's the point. This is a forum for discussion of opinions isn't it? I was just defending the guys right to air his opinion. You started a thread to promote your night in all about the soul, which to me seems like an unfair advantage over all the other promoters who wouldn't be aloud to do so. All of the posters except one were extolling your event as the muts nuts. I can't see how one comment out of all the other posts will be detrimental Ady. I also don't think that answering the guys post by name calling does you any favours. After all, this guy used to be a regular at the 100. Also, if you are enjoying a renaissance, why the need to start the post in the first place? I have no axe to grind Ady, and I congratulate you on turning it around again. My promoting days are long gone thank God. I know just how hard it is, and I would never do it again.
  10. Once again a person expresses an opinion and is lambasted by all concerned. If you can't take constructive critisism you shouldn't be promoting, it rather comes with the territory. It's not personal f.f.s. we are all older and hopefully wiser, and we should be getting some sort of proffessionalism from our top allnighters these days. If you expect people to travel long distances and pay good money, then you should try and give them what they want. That's the point I have been trying to make. People daren't express their opinions on this scene for fear of upsetting the status quo. What you lot are saying is, this is how it's always been, so it must be perfect, and if you don't like it you can f-off. Well thats just what a bloody lot folk have done. In fact I think 75% of the best people that used to come to my promotions are no longer on the scene. And I don't blame them.
  11. Things are worse than I thought when Huns Review goes for silly money and yet Sonny Herman goes for buttons. Has Butch played Huns Review or summat?
  12. Shouldn't this be in events?
  13. I personally feel that Middleton was a success because of one thing. The venue.

Hey Phil how are you, good I hope. I'm in total agreement, Instrumentals were massive back in the day, Mike Post - Afternoon, was hugh & rammed the dancefloor. I still love em but it wasn't about being Soulful, it was the dance beat & the handclapping that brought them alive. I understand what Bearsy means, I dislike R&B but there's exceptions to this rule. I still love to hear Mike & Ike - Sax on the trax, Mike Post - Bubblegum & Total Eclipse - 6 O'Clock plus Afternoon still raises the hairs on my neck. I must say that Sam's new "Prove yourself a lady" although not bad isn't a patch on the vocal & sounds great when sang along with your own wording in your head. The problem was that the infamous Simon tried turning everything into an instrumental,as did others & it basically killed it. We all loved & danced to a lot of stuff we're reluctant to admit to nowadays. Spot. Ey up Pete, I'm very well thank you, hope all is well with you. I agree, the instrumental can purvey that special something that sends you rushing to the dance floor just as much as a vocal record can. Butch's Sound of Philadelphia springs to mind. Best regards, Phil.

I know it sounds cheesey now Pete, but back then I thought it was fantastic. Same goes for Susy's Serenade. No one will admit to liking it, but it was massive back in the day. Oh and Bubblegum Breakthrough, Footsee, Brown Sugar etc, etc. Ps. Just remembered one that was huge and I've never heard it since the seventies. Van McCoy- Soul Improvisations pt.1. I used to bloody love that at the Mecca.

As with many Washington soul releases it is inherently scarce and this is possibly the only one in near-mint condition NOV - B Utopias Girls Are Against Me LaSalle 0072 VG++ 1500 Everything is rare on this Detroit label (even the rather under priced Buena Vistas instrumental) but this is the best of the four releases. Two sides as well, because many rate the reverse side ‘I Want To Go Back To My Dream World’. Condition is possibly better than VG++ - just a sniff below mint minus NOV - C Steve Mancha Did My Baby Call Wheelsville 102 VG+ 350 A low start price on the double sided Detroit classic for the simple reason that there is a mark which clicks AT THE VERY END. Still a winner for any enterprising deejay NOV - H Brother To Brother Gotta Situation Win Or Lose 224 VG++ 200 Here’s an oddity for you — and it’s a tough one as well, only the second copy we’ve ever had. Sure, the promo is quite common but the issue copy with this side is certainly rare. An early seventies dancer that hardly anyone knowsNOV - I Ray Frazier My Baby’s Hand Wright-Sound 0002 VG++ 1000 One of only two known copies of this West Coast sixties dancer fashioned by Arthur Wrightr. We always used to play quality instrumentals at Burnley. Just as with vocal records there are good instrumentals and terrible ones. Back in the day they were massive, and I still much prefer the instrumental versions to the classics like, Exus Trek, Breakaway, Rosemary What Happened etc. Karl used to play Gentleman June Gardner and follow it with Bo jr. both superb atmospheric records. The place used to go mental.
  20. A good friend of mine once came up to me at one of my promotions and said, "do you realise that you and me are probably the only ones in the room [it was very busy] that aren't on gear?" I am very naive on this subject, but I rather think my friend knew what he was talking about.
  21. I appreciate and respect your opinion. He is a great guy, I just personally don't like the way he mixes up the musical genres in his sets, and the messing with the mixer drives me nuts. I have told him this to his face, he just smiles.
  22. Quinvy replied to a post in a topic in Look At Your Box
I'm sorry but I thought it was your good self that was insulting me? By posting sleeping smileys you are basically saying that my posts aren't worthy of a written response. I thought this was a public forum for the discourse of rare / northern soul music? If you want a forum of sycophants and like minded back slappers, then I will refrain from any further posting. Best regards, Phil.
  23. Fair enough Chalky, I'll try and refrain from any further posting. You will have to forgive me if I don't rush out to hear these "new records" after listening to the highly acclaimed, and highly priced Sir Joe 45, I'd rather have my toe nails extracted with a pair of rusty pliers than listen to any more of that ilk. Best regards, Phil.
  24. Quinvy replied to a post in a topic in Look At Your Box
I feel the same about your posts too Chalky, especially your record recommendations, but I'm far too polite to insult you with sleeping smileys.
