  1. Unless anyone else replies will confirm next time I'm at the lock up.
  2. That's nothing mate - me mate Gavin used to DJ at a "Swingers" night in Brighton. On went the soul and off came the clothes - or at least that was the theory. I heard that the Manager / organiser got peed off because Gavin did such a good set that they were all dancing, when they should have been bunking off in pairs / threes etc. for unspeakable debauchery
  3. Does anyone know if Emmanuel is still around and kicking up some dust? I interviewed him on Soul 24-7 in 2001, and at that point he was still living in Detroit. I think he lived with his mum in an apartment in the projects, and I got the distinct impression that he'd seen better times. He gave a great interview, which I had to agree not to circulate, spoke fondly of all of his old recording days, but also how he had been ripped off by people taking his records etc. I know he was suspicious of people from England, and hopefully we helped restore a little trust. He'd also heard about the northern scene via people like JJBarnes etc. I was thinking that for someone who'se made so many GR8 recordings, he really is somewhat under appreciated.
  4. Sure is. They did two on the label, and this one is the best. The Other one ain't up to that much but is OK.
  5. On an issue Derek (as opposed to a DS WD) I rate Ilana as quite tough. She was from Pa. I think.
  6. Perhaps because it was outed as a scam and wasn't really Dena at all?
  7. Youy reg see the Admirals at 125. Bessie Banks doesn't show that often, but agree it's cheap when it does. One of the last ones to grace my collection was The Martians which is a comedy record and not northern, and although only a fiver, I don't reckon you see it that often. I think one of the Hot Sauce ones is quite tough too, but can't remember which one.....
  8. I couldn't remember yesterday on account of the large volume of plonk consumed saturday evening - but do now - it's A&R Booksearch.
  9. Chalkmeister - did you try that on line book shop in Cornwall (St Ives I think)? That's where I got mine - though it was some years back
  10. Niet Comrad. The land north of Alaska is unoccupied, that is until you reach the Northern shores of the former Soviet Union (at which point you are actually heading due south, but that is immaterial as your compass will have stopped working a long time ago). This I contend must surely be the TRUE home of Northern Soul? The Northern Seaports of the former Soviet Union are awash with oil, rusting Naval vessels, rare vinyl, small unknown singers and hitherto undiscovered record labels. All greatfully supported by Comrade Roman Abramnovich.
  11. Doh! I was thinking of dropping it at Cleethorpes, but maybe it's a bit too dated for the modern room - B side is great deep / sweet too
  12. It was the last record on the label and presumably the "isshoes" didn't get much further than the factory before the label went "tits up". Beware the double sided demo without "IBT" on. I have an issue copy, but I rolled my DJ chair over it while at 24-7 in a moments over indulgance doing my "Smashey & Nicey" routine. Being of the "styrene" variety of pressing it is now complete "avec un crack de hairline".
  13. Thank you Sir! Tis quite a difficult piece to find 'az it 'appenz.
  14. Presumably a version of the thing on Accent - which I have always quite liked!
  15. Absolutely cool Gal ! No need for apologies or stuff like that.
  16. A poor picture but looks well moody with moulded label. As they say on Ebay "Caveat Emptor". Looks like a boot to me.
  17. Bon soir, et merci beaucoup!
  18. Great 60's soul, and there is a big difference between 60's and Northern at times
  19. Great Record though! My old vg+ copy has seen many years good service
  20. Rock City was also evening do's, sort of 8-2. Whilst mentioning Peterborough, we mustn't forget Papa Luigis moddun evenings mid 80's which Nick Gilbert and myself organised. Plus there were loads of little do's round Stamford way - Mick Cooper, Russ etc. organised these. St Ives also enjoyed a brief revival, though I tended to concerntrate in the modern methodology at this point, and remember the northern room as being pretty basic. Fleet and Wirrina were on at various times through the decade, with various promotors and once at the same time  . Always felt the Fleet was the more "cozy" of the two venues. That being said I was actually DJing when there was the bomb scare at the Wirrina - I can tell you when everyone came back inside you could have filled the dancefloor playing trad jazz everyone was so "up for it"! Fun times. Chrisseo - no prob with people having time off for kids, we've all been there, and that's not the point I was saying. Instead the point was that some people think the scene died in the 80's while everyone was away - this thread shows that it didn't die, far from it infact, it was vibrant, and perhaps more underground. But there again after Casino Classics etc that was no bad thing.....
  21. The air guitar was actually late 70's "O" and came initially with records like 7th Wonder "Captain of my ship", and really grew in the 80's with things like Brothers Gilmore. Of course King Moses takes it to another level. I think it was originally a form of response to "Russ" playing "Price Buster" in the main room at Wigan...
  22. The 80's certainly wasn't dead or a lowpoint. You always here the "everyone got married and had kids" argument. Tosh! A lot of people did drift away, but a lot of them (not all) were "makeweights" anyway, but the scene still had humungous vibrancy throughout the 80's. It's usually the 70's hasbeen and egotistical elite that decry the 80's (i.e. "we left the scene and so it must have died"). Some things of the 80's to put it in perspective: 100 Club ascendancy Stafford Hinckley "Ric Tic Review" Popcorn Wylie tour Morecombe Pier RSG Peterborough (Fleet / Wirrina - on occasions two all nighters on the same night!) Leicester Rotherham Clifton Hall Sheffield Romeo & Juliets Rock City (Notts) Many great records also got their first airing in this period, and the moddun scene came into it's own. The 80's was when the kids of the 70's picked up the scene and claimed it for their own......I won't hear a word said against it.
  23. QOF - Equally there are plenty of people with dosh falling out of their pockets who are not great DJ's. There are other ingredients required too - ability to read the crowd, taste, passion etc.
