Inexpensive Records For Big Djs?
Hi Drew, can fill several CDs for you with 'white R&B popbeat' records like that…. Although I have a soft spot for Ronnie Milsap and "Never had it so good" is one of the best blue eyed records ever made, his poppier stuff is just good beat music, this one doesn't fit like "Ain't no soul in these old shoes"……Is this what the soul scene has come to now? If so thousands more "niter" records to be "discovered"

Inexpensive Records For Big Djs?
You have to be joking Louis? Was it a "Radio 2 Roadshow" or something?….. Nice piece of Bacharach / David, but no way should this be played at a Niter, no way…...and there are better DW tracks to find too. I am quite shocked that this would get played…..Elgins I can understand since it was a youth club record….but "Walk on by" at a Niter is just so wrong on so many levels…."Walk on home" more like

You're not getting it Sooty......plenty ain't gonna step out to go to an event that champions the type of oldies you are posting. I understand Pete's point about "I walked away" sounding better on a sound system, but I still ain't gonna travel, well next door to be honest, to hear it and "Something new to do" etc......nice record but y-a-w-n. At least you got a kick ass oldie (and one that has been revived in the last few years) at the end of your 'essay' - Face Reality! That's a start I suppose...... Enjoy Lifeline Sooty....

Not quite right. The scene is much more fragmented in London, there are loads of nights run by various long timers, scene returnees, ex mods etc. Whilst we don't tend to have the "nostalgia" element either....what we do have is on one level excellent gigs like Marco S's and Leona's, and at the other extreme former mods / returnees playing boots. And it's not all northern either small 70s / crossover venues exist as well.....Allnighter wise there is the well supported Crossfire and there is of course the 100 Club. Fewer people yes, but not the same "nostaliga scene" confusing things either. There's certainly no bus loads of hand baggers turning up for a good Saturday night out with "The Snake".....

Inexpensive Records For Big Djs?
Hi Gaz, that's not strictly true. there's a collectors angle here too. A lot of us have played sizeable sums for good unknowns, either on spec or because they are unknown and hence by definition rare....But I do agree everyone is on a journey and everyone is at a different stage of that journey. One man's great £10 find is another's moment of boredom. We are all in different places. Also there is a massive difference between "rare" and "in demand". Rare is the most over used word I've ever heard (apart from "across the board").....basically used to describe any record more than £20. Plenty of these so called "rare" records are not rare at all and plenty of genuine good quality rare records aren't even on most people's radars.

It's a great pop record and the best record Ashford & Simpson ever wrote. In fact Nick auditioned for Motown with a demo of it having originally written it with Maxine Brown & Chuck Jackson in mind. Maybe it's just me but I am struggling to square it with an all nighter. But anniversary explains it. Dick Sniff is a good egg. Cheers.

I want to clarify my comment "Gibbons". For the avoidance of any doubt this word was used in the context of answering a question about a promotor's last name; in this case Sean Gibbons, formerly of the Parish of Morecombe, Lancs. In no way should the use of the word "Gibbons" be construed in any other way....Continued on P66

Gibbons.

The Coalitions Album
Yes agree. Played two tracks off of it on the radio at the beginning of the month. Soul junction does the bizness once again! And we can trace the Coalitions right back to Little Tony Talent - good old fashioned niter sound. Also coming unissued J B Bingham tracks...they're very good too.

Sorry, Andy are you attempting to summarize Sooty's "bag of wind" post?.....:LOL - if so it didn't come out you just seem to have re-posted it.....One way of getting the page numbers on the thread up I guess! "he he x Luv etc.. @@"

At non northern events it happens all the time. Plenty of Djs don't have any rare records. At northern / rare events, yes the odd ones fit in nicely. Admirations on One-Der-Ful, and The Performers on Mirwood are two I've slipped into sets in the last year. I know Chalky plays a lot of underplayed cheaper 60's stuff. But you couldn't play "Be Thankful" or stuff like "maxine Nightingale" at a northern night and walk away with your credibility in tact....they are handbaggers records!!!!
