Well said Maria! Whenever ive been in Oz (every year!) ive found the native Aussie soulies to be more diverse and interesting in taste and knowledge..particularly Callum, Samantha, Alex, Frank (hes a brit exception.ha!). all that bigotted "were English , so know what soul is crap" is vacuous without the tunes and the will to expand the mind and soul. For me Europe scene is far more interesting and open.

I agree...i went to Wigan, but it wasnt the be all and end all of Northern soul and i certainly dont feel the need or desire to go back! There are many bigots on this scene and a lot resent young people. Probably makes them insecure., i dont know. Thats why i enjoy Melbourne, Oslo, Milan...anywhere where theres no agenda and an open mind to music. Think the problem is one of semantics and definition. Thats why i say im not into Northern Soul, as its been weighed down in a very negative way by a bunch of old duffers looking for ownership and control. Im definitely into SOUL and havent heard every track of every genre, so cannot say 'I dont like' a particular style...theres room for all. Young people are essential to 'SOUL' surviving. As for Northern Soul, its been argued overand manipulated so much that im not sure what it means. To me it was an attitude and energy, that led me to listen to soul music non-stop and travel each week to hear NEW and exciting music, to one of a handful of venues that was supported by a group of likeminded, open hearted souls. I think the situation nowadays, with a thousand vevues on every week (seems like!) and the 'older generations' dwindling desire to travel, is a lot more fractuous and thats why is neccessary for younger souls to kick some life into it and show some unity.....peace.

Totally agree Steve. He is of course, an icon of the soul scene and, dare i say it, of soul itself....and worth every penny of a bookers fee, be it £100 or £1000. What Mr Winstanley doesnt know about soul, isn't worth knowing...AND he still manages to break so many new tunes aswell. A real force of nature! One of the few who has remained true to his 'roots'....(ginger i think.)

Mr Levine has told me Annie that he has a Mega Rare 1965 Tune that John Manship has not even listed, that Tim Brown or Pat Brady has never seen in there lives and he is gonna spin it's debut at Soul @ The Barhouse Allnighter. A Totaly unknown discovery on original vinyl getting it's public premiere in little old Chelmsford. Love it. Whats this rubbish mean. Loads of people have LOADS of tunes that are not in JMs book AND they get played out! So hardly makes the venue different to any other. Pat & Tim havent seen much over the last 5 or so years because they dont get out their arm chairs to see it, so hardly a recommendation! Maybe these promoters need to venture out more and see whats really going on! Not listed doesn't mean its any good and the word Mega Rare does not improve the record...
