CULCHETH - STOCKHOLM SOUL COMES TO TOWN
20241005_235030.mp4 So, something that came from a brief conversation many months ago, on the lines of âCarlâs coming over to the UK first weekend in October, do you fancy putting him o at CULCHETH?â Well, as I knew Carl from his guest sets at TUFF LOVE SOUL WEKENDERS and DAB of SOUL WEEKENDERS to name just a couple, I thought, Yeh, great idea. So from that it grew into a STOCKHOLM SOUL COMES TO THE NORTH-WEST format with Carl doing THE SHIRT CLUB, Friday, CULCHETH Saturday and CAN YOU DIG IT on Sunday, so anyone and everyone could have a chance to come along on any of the events to suit them. Iâm please to say a great crowd came along to CULCHETH to witness our guests BOB SPENDLOVE and CARL HEDBERG play fantastic music to a very appreciative crowd. If you were there, you will have witnessed first-hand, pure enthusiasm and joy from a guy playing the music he obviously lovesâŚIf you werenât there, sorry, but you missed a cracker! Rarities mixed with cheapies, classics mixed with underplayed gems, it had it all⌠Just a few of the comments from the night⌠âCarl H, The best set of 2024â âA super night at Culchethâ âMusically, top notchâ âSoul gems, one after the other, throughout the eveningâ âQuality tunes are part and parcel of this venuesâ continuing successâ Thanks to everyone who came along on Saturday, you really do make the difference and make it all worthwhile! 20241005_234927.mp4

CULCHETH - STOCKHOLM SOUL COMES TO TOWN
Up n Coming at CULCHETH⌠Following the great night at CULCHETH on September 7th when we welcomed âThe Godfather of Soulâ, SOUL SAM back behind the wheels of steel for two great sets in the Modern Room AND the Northern room, playing a great mix of rare 60âs, 70âs and 80âs soul, classics and a few of his very tasty cover-ups, to a very welcoming crowdâŚNow we have a bit of a coup to share with youâŚOur Special Guest on Saturday OCTOBER 5th, all the way from SWEDEN is STOCKHOLM SOUL supremo, CARL HEDBERG! CARL has been the driving force of the renowned, annual, STOCKHOLM SOUL WEEKENDERS and FAMILY CIRCLE European promotions, not only that CARL has DJâd at the world famous 100 CLUB, DAB of SOUL WEEKENDERS, TUFF LOVE WEEKENDERS as well as a host of venues across Europe. Carlâs collection has been built up over many years and boasts the kind of records, loved by the CULCHETH crowd, Monster sounds from the Casino, Stafford, 100 Club, to name but a few. It would be an understatement to say we are looking forward to welcoming CARL to the decks⌠Along with CARL and as part of a celebratory âSTOCKHOLM comes to the NORTH-WEST' 3-Day, 3 Venue event, we welcome, BOB SPENDLOVE from THE SHIRT CLUB in Radcliffe to CULCHETH for his inaugural set at the venue. Nick Cowan BBC Merseyside Short Clip
Wow⌠what a pleasant surprise to see (and hear) this!... Terrysâ Radio Merseyside show was a must-listen Monday night event to someone, like many others, in comparison to today, âstarvedâ of new music on the radio. As an added benefit, it was great to hear Nick start to broadcast a few Northern tracks, albeit, literally, two or three, at the end of the show. Later through his limited DJâing sets a Sutton Conny Club in my hometown of St Helens, I got to know Nick well. As an avid collector, his taste in Soul had already moved on from stock-in Northern (which he still loved) to less well known, sounds and he put me on to some great records. Nick used to lend me records to listen to at my leisure, which was a great way for me to hear many tunes for the first time, for which Iâll always be grateful and I still have the hand-written lists from our 'swap-meets'. After many visits to his house, circumstances changed and we lost contact, but hearing this recording brings back many memories from a point in time and sincere thoughts for a really genuine, nice person. If you are reading this Nick, Iâd just like to wish you all the very best, and if your around, would love to catch up again⌠All the Best Baz x

CULCHETH with SPECIAL GUEST SOUL SAM
While Mick Howard did such a great review of the main room on Saturday, here's one for the Culcheth Modern Room - Saturday 7th September 2024 Resident DJ's - Steve Plumb, Bill Wildman & Barry Maleedy Guest - Soul Sam The monthly 'do within a do' aka The Culcheth Modern Room has been building momentum for quite a while now and Saturday night saw this momentum build into an absolutely cracking night. Soul Sam, who is thankfully back up and running after his health problems earlier in the year, was the Guest DJ, ably assisted by three of the regular Modern Room team, which saw a good crowd 'early doors' for the regular first spot of brand new/forthcoming releases. As our intrepid champion of 'new vinyl releases' Pete Ratcliffe was away this month, the first spot was covered by Steve Plumb, using Pete's choices of killer forthcoming releases from Kent, New Broad St, Soul Direction, Soul Junction, Izipho, Super Disco Edits and newcomer Riker Records. Quite a crowd were in early with plenty of folks (including Soul Sam) bobbing up to the decks to enquire about many of the tracks. Please check the playlist which has been posted by Pete as there are some future winners here for sure. Steve Plumb followed and did his own 'official' set and continued in a similar vein with a host of 'forthcoming/cd/download only' tracks from artists such as Good and Plenty, Drake Frye, The Modulations, Isaiah Sharkey (Plumbob edit), Cameron Foster (a nod to Mr Lucas) etc which got plenty of interest from the knowledgeable crowd and finally the MNDA 45 from MT Jones which went down a storm. Props to Creative Soul for a brilliant 45 for a seriously worthwhile cause. With all this fervent activity early on, the crowd were eagerly awaiting the return of Soul Sam, doing an early set in the Modern Room so that he could get on down to the Northern Room for another set later on. In true Sam style he absolutely rammed the floor from the very first spin, the mighty fine version of 'I'll be around' by Lee Fields & Sharon Jones. The hour shot by with proper 'Sam' classics (Flourescent Smogg, Mark IV etc), a recent spin from Rocky Valentine, then a nod back to the halcyon days of Modern Soul at Wigan Casino with spins from Top Cat (Larry Houston) and Lee Moore and the Resourceful Ones (Ike Strong). Then it was all over and off he went to weave his magic in the Culcheth Northern Room, leaving Bill Wildman behind on the wheels of steel. Bill did a fine hour of Modern Soul dance music from the 80's & 90's with classic tunes from Sherrick, Tower of Power, The Controllers etc keeping the dance floor ticking over nicely. Steve Plumb came back on for a second set (well, third but who's counting) with some contemporary killers from Chuckii Booker, Solo etc followed by a brief dip into Crossover territory with Glenn Miller & Willie Tee. The Culcheth faithful really were 'having so much fun' đ Finally, up stepped Mr Culcheth himself Barry Maleedy to finish off the night in style with some fine Soulful dance music mixed to perfection in the shape of Shazz, Omar feat Angie Stone, MAW feat India, Mr K's Luther edit etc as Bobby Womack brought the curtain down on a killer night in the Culcheth Modern Room. Thanks to everyone who supported us, let's do it all again on Saturday 5th October.

CULCHETH with SPECIAL GUEST SOUL SAM
So, while genuinely excited about having SOUL SAM back on the âWheelsâ at CULCHETH, it would be remiss not to mention the strength of the residents team lined up for this coming SATURDAY 7th SEPTEMBER. Firstly, the main room, featuring the best of the best in rare, classic and underplayed 60âs and 70âs soul. KEV MURPHY is enjoying well deserved recognition for his years of championing rare Northern Soul. Since LOWTON CIVIC HALL Kev has been at the forefront of collecting and playing some of the best rare soul 45âs, from main room classics to genuinely underplayed tunes which heâs featured and brought to the attention of soul lovers hungry for great ear and foot candy alike. Kev is joined on Saturday, and on a regular basis by ASHTON UKRAINIAN regular, SIMON INGHAM. Simon got the 'bug' back in the late 80âs and has collected rare soul with a passion since then and is still going strong today. Testament to that, will be Ralph Graham âShe Just Sits Thereâ, Johnny Gilliam âRoom Full of Tearsâ along with left fielders from The Exotics, Lou Bond, Garnet Mimms and a few surprises, getting a spin from Simonâs play box on Saturday. Next up is another guest spinner this Saturday, ROBBO. The charismatic and devoted soul man from Manchester, will be gracing the decks and showing why he is still one of the most loved and respected guys on the scene. Dig into his play box and you will find records that heâs championed at various venues across the North West over the years and because of all these things heâll always be a part of the CULCHETH fabricâŚexpect the unexpected but expect quality! Away from the main room, the MODERN ROOM at CULCHETH is a âDo within a Doâ. Standing on its own merits, the Modern Room ticks all the boxes for those looking for tunes with that more modern âfeelâ. So be it 70âs 80âs 90âs, right up to todayâs latest new vinyl releases, the MODERN ROOM at CULCHETH, satisfies the need! Residents in the MODERN ROOM have as good a CV as the boys in the main room, with STEVE PLUMB heading the list. STEVE has been at the forefront of the Modern scene for years and his knowledge and taste is a true reflection of that. A DJ with sets at some of the best modern events in the UK and Europe, not to mention the highly acclaimed So Soulful 70âs North West Soul nights, Steve is an integral part of the CULCHETH vibe. BILL WILDMAN, is an unassuming character with a deep history of DJing at some of the North Westsâ favourite venues. CASSINELLIS and NEWTON CRICKET CLUB are two that come to mind straight away. Bill, brings the music from those venues, as well as other venues he frequented in the 80âs and 90âs like RAFTERS, PARKERS and the HALFWAY HOUSE, so expect some great modern soul selections from Bill when he takes to the decks. I guess that just leaves me supporting a brilliant team on SaturdayâŚnot much to say about that really, apart from looking forward to it, genuinely enjoy CULCHETH every month and hope to see some of you for a great night out on Saturday đ
