  1. now i come to think of it may have been life "cats eyes "
  2. Memory might of faded but James Lewis , chuck wood , the originals ,correct me if i am wrong Babe Ruth - played by John Vincent ,but may have been in the main room
  3. i was at a night last year when three girls came through the door expecting a " singles night" they asked for the three Degrees and when offered Contact (very apt ) insisted on hearing "when will i see you again ",they left after securing a refund from the door
  4. happy to help if its Motown and sixties soul
  5. the price of some "rarities " astound me these days ,especially when i see records i have had for years and never played reach £ 100 plus plus . yes there will always be good quality records and collectors but as recession hits harder ,they will be few and far between ,the record selling fraternity have never taken into account the lack of money around ( in my opinion ) and its no wonder they get "stuck " with records , i say be real when selling records ,dealers
  6. Looking for "longing for you " ,good price paid
  7. we must never lose touch of what the people that come through the door want ,the subject of OVO has gone viral on this site as it is ,i do agree that any audience at a soul night will be split in those who only want to hear rare and not so rare on originals and those who "what the hell just let me dance " ,the above deck cameras ,the people with filofaxes noting label colours etc ,dont do it for me ,in my case i play 99% originals with a few reissues thrown in ,but might now throw a boot in and see the reaction !!! ,luckiliy i am a minnow on the scene (an old minnow at 57 ) so i can see the pressure the big boys must be under at the large venues ,but hey at the end of the day ,its nice to see converts going away and saying what a great night ill come again and its in the soul that counts
  8. would start off with "hello its me again " then play the most expensive most obscure record that all the jocks that came before you would say "bloody hell where did he get that from " ,sod the punters , only joking of course ,a nice instrumental usually starts a spot well or something with a great intro (thinking ronnie mcneir ,frankie and the classicals etc etc )
  9. I Clear floors on a regular basis ,thats why i am still a warm up man /trainee aged 57,seriously though people will dance when they want to and to whatever sound they want to dance too ,i believe there is no science at all to this ,but still great to "break" new sounds as there would never have been a scene today like it is

  11. I Had all the badges (wigan ,howard mallett ,catacombs ,pendulum ) all sewn on a cloth holdall which i carried around all the time but like me the holdall wore away with time and the badges faded away ,these are best as memories for those who attended these legendary nights ,but unsure if they are relevant wearing them today (or am i just a spoilsport )

I have in recent times bought records off Ebay that in my opinion are not as described ,however i have stuck with buying from this source in the hope that 99% of records sold are exactly as described , am guilty of not adding feedback ,but i do pay on the nail and have complained only once about a record (warped beyond belief) ,unfortunately there are some people out there abusing Ebay you only have to look at the threads on this subject ,dont want to be too negative but Record arrives from known dealer = cant wait to open package Record arrives from ebay = opens package with fingers crossed will always repeat orders to ebay sellars that have done the business though

  14. Tommy Ducks was situated where Barboroli Square /Bridgewater hall is ,great Pub which literally was demolished during the night to stop protesters ,mind you in the 70s manchester ciity centre lost loads of pubs this way ,especailly around the Arndale(the swan on withy grove with its downstairs speakeasy for one)
  15. been to to many nights when the DJS have been playing to each other and not the paying punters ,we all like to "slip" unknowns or rarer sounds into our "spots " ,but doing it gently and not demanding that "you should like what i am playing !!! " works in my experience ,have just started DJing again after years in recluse ,i have nothing but praise for the crowds that attend soul nights and not experienced the "label " police myself or the "handbaggers " either
  16. i agree with having playlists ,surely the days of cover ups have gone ,also how many have bought a record that they have seen on a playlist (sat pumping them into you tube if not known ) i know i do on a regular basis ,but that also gives me no excuse for publishing mine after the next City Centre soul night at the Black Lion Salford 23/06
  17. am known as the "records man" by Altrincham sorting office ,still spend a lot of time picking up from there after work on a wednesday ,only had one lot go missing in twelve months ,did have an arrangement for postino to leave in my bin ! ,but this has not happened
