  4. great great record!
  5. after this past weekend, we now have another great night here in copenhagen that I'm proud to say I've started; Delegates Of Soul. great venue with wonderful sound and a wooden floor, and DJs from all of Denmark's best clubs. we had such a wonderful mix of music, with true 60's northern soul being most in the forefront but some great and rare 70's crossover/modern, some funkier sides, all wonderful and keeping the floor going. I will try to get some playlists from the other DJs if people are interested, but here are some of my selections from the night, in no particular order: carrie cleveland - make love to me (audio ent) don bryant - coming on strong (hi) ann sexton - you've been gone too long (seventy 7) mighty marvellows - talkin bout you baby (abc) sylvia thomas - at last (bamboo) exsaveyons - I don't love you no more (smoke) brothers of soul - come on back (boo) melvin davis - save it (mala) imperial wonders - trying to get to you (black prince) gwen owens - just say you're wanted (velgo 2nd) gene chandler - after the laughter (checker) johnny gilliam - its over (cancer) ethics - look at me now (vent) tnt band - the meditation (cotique) betty everett - getting mighty crowded (vee jay) bobby dixon - woman you made me (abc probe) witches & the warlock - behind locked doors (sew city) barbara randolph - i got a feeling (soul) sandy brockington - it was you (bengee) del larks - job opening (queen city)
  6. one added: The Show Stoppers - It Ain't Nothin' But A House Party / What Can A Man Do? (Heritage) great double sided mover, DJ Copy. ring wear/wol. VG++ plays very strong and clear. £15

esquires - everybody's laughing is a great side, and for a great price. get on this, people!
  8. a couple nice bits for sale, with pictures of the actual labels. shipping will be £2 within europe, £4.50 UK. reasonable offers on the two together. thanks for looking! Mind Readers - Bitter Tears (Village Sounds) nice funky soul, not too common? EX/EX £25 The Persians - I Don't Know How (To Fall Out Of Love) / Here It Comes nice upbeat northern on the A side, excellent Deep/Sweet on the B. drill hole, some ring wear. VG++ £12
  9. I remember one of the first northern records I was turned onto was Billy Arnell - Tough Girl. I definitely see that as being far more pop in sound than your average stomper. was pretty keen on it then but listening to it now I find it to be too big a slice of cheese for my consumption.
  10. I've always thought "Happy People" by him was an excellent stepper and would make a nice end to a night.
  11. ohh ohh forgot about that Gee's record, what a fantastic number. gotta track that one down.
  12. seconding Tams and Ujima. "Hey!" by Barbara Mercer always gets me. but I've probably mentioned that a number of times... this one too:
  13. great one, Peter
  14. perhaps this has been covered before, but could make for an interesting discussion... we pretty much all know the "3 before 8" well enough by now, but what other tracks do you soul-sourcers like to hear or play to close out a night? what sound best rounds out your set when its time to pack up the box one more time? do you like to end on an uptempo dance number or a nice deep side to mellow it all out before the lights come up? here's my current selection for a closer:
  15. Los Mozambiques - I Like To Be With You the label is called Happy, hehe I showed it to another soul collector mate who told me it sounded like "wedding background music sh*t", to each their own but I think it has a really nice sweet soul edge to it.
  16. Helena IS the best! happy to be seeing her play next weekend here in copenhagen. hers and jonte and sebastian's post-Function club Soulin' in malmö is a top notch night as well.
  17. I love to start my sets with this one; people look at you like you're out of your mind for the first minute or so of the record with its gospel-tinged languid blues, but then BAM! it hits with heavy funky northern power and everyone comes running back to the floor as quickly as they left. that, or most do
  18. to clarify, I won't just be hitting "play" on my laptop and playing this mix. refer to my posts in the recent "OVO" thread...
  19. threw together a little mix of tracks for an upcoming weekend of gigs here in Copenhagen, and thought I'd share it for anyone interested. nothing exceedingly rare here, but maybe some tracks you haven't thought of in a while? enjoy.
  20. I've seen it go for upwards of £150 these days, though I can't remember what it sold for on Manship's.
  21. the regular night I do here in copenhagen is myself, playing mostly 60's rare soul sounds with a bit of crossover mixed in (OVO), and my younger DJ partner playing 60's garage/beat/mod sounds from CD. we get along just fine, even if I do jab at him a little for a laugh sometimes. In my own personal opinion, I tend to look down a little on DJs not playing vinyl (OVO or not), for the reasons most of you have (better sound, the collecting/time aspect, the format you've started with), but I also understand that not everyone can afford the time and money we put into it. and my partner throws down some really great sets that get the floor moving sometimes even more than my spins. even if I'm going to be a OVO purist for the rest of my days, I think both have their merits. now my only hope is that the vinyl sound will rub off on Marcus a bit.
  22. some great latin mod R&B/boogaloo, recently sold on manship's auction:
  23. wow, hadn't heard "so fine", great number!
