  7. I'll say it because it needs saying....and is pert to the BBC's approach to the scene as witnessed last night!x Yesterday morning a good 20 year friend of my Producer friend and now mine was having a meeting with the BBC Executives that deal with placement for music across the service and channels. In his bag he had some of our music which i've shared with you in here. By pure co-incidence....our friend has been a good friend to Ian levine over the years...dares to say he's been his 'guru' in such matters which Ian would acknowledge he has said! It came out in discussions we had when first meeting about our album. From my perspective it was great....somebody 'knew the craic' about Norvern and was out to promote our music and by default the Soul scene....which has always been my intention! I haven't been wrong! Anyway....his feed back after a lengthy discussion is that folk in the BBC are MAD...about Northern!!!!!x It bears out too. I hear quite often tracks backing trailers for this and that.....and ater last night I think because of Paul's approach and truth....I think it can only build better ties with the scene from within the service!x We already do brilliant with Sky! Regularly Northern tracks back football montagues.....feature as links to shows...and all kinda bits and bobs. Soccer AMs Max Rushden and the show ownerTim are Northern fans....and loads come through that medium too. Max is a Cambridge United fan...we worked together often before he got the job....(Sorry Ian!xhehe!x). I had a cable show in Cambridge which he watched ritually back in 2001/2 and we used Northern stuff to our program every week! Lovejoy took on board some of our ideas.....even had Chris Kamara doing cameos of stuff I did on our show! So...the 'influence' has been there for years!x ITV? Advert after advert feature Northern! Those folk like our mutual friend who deal with the Commercial aspect of telly.....are 'switched' on to it....indeed it is the 'buzz' word in the industry.....hence the super reception we are getting with our music....for the modern era!x One of the hats I wear is as a media man and self styled journalist....I notice these things......and felt the need to share it!x The scene is in a good place at present.....it needs capitalising on and invested into the future....by all who have time served and something to give.....I reckon...X LUV SOOTY X

I got paid for the production and really didn't want to take anything for it.....as it wos cr*p...by my standards! The lighting was horrific too...red red red everywhere...and killed it big time. Anyway...I haven't spoken about it really on SS because I ain't happy with it...so don't! That was my previous involvement with Wigan Anniversary's at Kings Hall...and with the venue and promoters in question. In fact it was the last time Kev and I spoke 10 years ago until a few months back. So...i'll now say me bit on the current topic in this thread!x Anniversary's are 'Party's'. The bigger...the better. Kings Halls 'it' at present...isn't it? Could it be done better....more focused to Soulies of today with genuine reflection on the scene??? I'm sure. I remember the 30th....given the 30th anni...the crowd....then yep......things could have been better all round from a Promoters perspective. Same can be said of most large venues tho' I found. Is it a money generator...of course. Is that the intentions of the Promoters? I'm sure...business is business whilst your all enjoying yourselves!!....and it is there to do. This is why... My first big doo...or proper Northern Dooo was Keele xmas party '92. I danced to Bobby Goldsboro's Too Many People....3 TIMES.....and LOVED IT!!! I had never heard the tune in me life...or had the experience of a Nighter.....and to underpin it...never taken speed until that night.......! Point is...I left there that night chewing me friends heads off as I would have saying 'i'm gonna do a do like that and DJ at Keele one day!'....! 4 months later....I organised my first ever Soul Night. That was April 1993. From other threads now closed...Keb apparently said.the scene was at a lethargic stage early 90's. A transition was occurring from oldies to newies and a bit of R&B and Doo Wop thrown in...! When I travelled the UK for the next year lapping up the music and knowledge whilst making friends....I realised Keele was probably it...the modern Wigan Casino of the day....! It was great....every time...and I loved it. That 'experience' will be had by those attending this 40th. Rightly so....a night out init...like my first Keele was. It inspired me to host over 70 Soul Nights...9 A/Ns...re-launching a dead St Ives to success....and entertaining THOUSANDS Nationwide. Indeed I was part of the resurgence that swept the Country from '93/-98. Yes...on that wave...Chris King..Ian Levine and others came back. They admit such on the original 'Togetherness' film I made....out soon!!x So what? I quit...Shifty found his niche....others who came on that journey carried on...Len's still here and kicking well....and yes......if it wasn't for Keele....'party'...and an innocent fella walking in.....most of that would never have happened...END OF! So I find it difficult to 'rubbish' the occasion or indeed berate the Promoters. The 'chat' goes around about those who line their pockets on the night. We all know that! What's true...or bollo* is irrelevant.....in the grand scale! Let them have their party I say! I'd enjoy it for the craic as I do! Otherwise........put summink of use to the people en masse together yourselves....! 14. I agree with your sentiments entirely JimK...X 'Fraudulent' promotion is out of order of any kind....dead right! If we went to the Ritz and folk were playing OOTP copy's then we'd feel cheated....and that serious point hasn't been lost on me mate...X The Carla Thomas scenario wasn't in my brain until you raised the topic!!!x However....when I apply the OVO/OFO approach to that tune in particular.....I didn't know where the acceptability rested! I still don't really! Whether I can afford it or not is irrelevant....but if a £10 copy is considered acceptable for DJing let's say at The Ritz....then why spend £80 which could be used for another tune?!!!x I suppose if I read my initial comments..they could be perceived as being pedantic! That's the problem when keeping comment short....it's open for interpretation! So i'll expand!x A few months ago...a young 15 year old was kicked off of Soul Source unceremoniously for being....15! Rules are rules however they are applied. Ethan....is the lads name....he is a keen Soulie and budding DJ following in his family footsteps. They were disgruntled and a bit disillusioned at the time. I followed him up and offered to assist him with his collection and DJing aspirations. Folk will tell you that's 'standard' in my approach and indeed encouraged the youth back in the 90's when a Promoter. Many of you buy from such an individual today who was encouraged as a then 15 year old....16+ years later!x In essence I was investing in the scenes future....and it has paid dividends for all....job done!x This new lad Ethan...is at that point too....either he is encouraged...or becomes a stoner flogging weed like perhaps most of his mates will be instead of plugging into something useful and Sociable. Working with the Youth around the nation gives me such pessimism towards their futures. So....as I am putting a small collection together for him....as many dealers on here know...then the last thing I want to do is pile bootlegs or non PC copys on him that could detract from his aims to be a 'credible' DJ on the scene. Hence my sincere question. I have just bought a Carla for £80 to add to my collection. If that is what it takes to add to Ethans...then i'd rather buy him another lot of tunes for that £80!!! That's what i'm waffling about.......and sorry to have not given the full SP in the first place...ok!x So...is this issue 'acceptable' for the up and coming DJ...or not? Simples.... DJ's.....in the real sense of the word out in the non Northern 'circuit'? To be perfectly honest Winnie.....if I review the hundreds of 'DJ's' I witnessed on the Northern Scene in the 90's.....I wouldn't be able to count more than a dozen that could have hacked a doo where DJing was what it was about!! Perhaps 20 could have entertained at a wedding and pulled it off consistently for 5 hours. Trawling through the above comments inspired this.... I have never been asked to play or not to play anything....ever!! Huh?! I'm the DJ init?!! A good DJ should suss the venue...policy or local interests upon arrival or know the craic after hearing whats gone before! Personally before becoming established back in the 90's I had been to every venue as a punter I DJd at...apart from a few S/Nights I DJ'd at en route to a Nighter! I danced....made friends and did Soulie stuff either as a DJ or Soulie...nowt has changed from my approach! Another good trait to develop for wannabee DJs is to be at a gig from start...to finish! As a Soulie or DJ....it was 'standard' for me! I was oblivious as to what had gone before 1992. When trucking UK wide to enjoy the scene as a Soulie.....I discovered there was discontent among 'the people' as the DJs had perhaps gone too far ahead of 'the people' with their sets and left much of what was good behind! As I made friends with all DJs and factions be they into newies...oldies...obscure....rare or pop....then it gave me an across the board playing field which i embraced! The DJ's who influenced my new collection back in the 90's?? Shifty.....who would put Our Love Is In the Pocket next to Betty Obrien's She'll Be Gone which was unheard of Nationally at the time really....and follow it with Don Varners Tear Stained and then The Phonetics Just a Boys dream.....all over the place.....but super tunes from wherever! Len....played Bud Harper....I'm sure I heard him play Jeanette before it went National followed by Janice...always with a smile and was dancing to other DJs throughout the night.....a proper DJ!! I danced to Butch at every occasion....but never sought to emulate or copy him.....no brainer!!hehe!x But took on board his confidence in presenting his music he believed in! Money? I could afford any tune Butch or any of them have....but I followed him often at the 100Club....and had the same confidence in my groove as he did....irrelevant of cost or rareity....and it worked for us both! He left me regularly with a £2000 pounder acetate spinning which I followed with a £2er on occasion from a Charity shop......and had the same success! So...money ain;t what is has to be I figured!x Dean Anderson/Andy Dyson.....unbelievable tunes they were playing in the 90's....out of the ball park....all done with a content they had which never phased them! Cool hands indeed!x Roger Banks...Bob Hindsley....Big Scotty....Pete Hollander...all cutting edge at the time and playing stuff you never heard anywhere else! Then you had what I call the 'entertainers'...which I am proud to be part of....Brian Rae...Keith Minshull....Derek Allen....Rob Smith....Dave Evison......always guaranteed floor packers and playing the best of what has gone before back in the 90's. To back all this up....I made friends with what were then 'armchair' Soulies....they'd been there done that and become philosophers of the music and scene so to speak! Richard Domar....and Kev Featherstone were it for me in the main! Richard was always willing to tell me the history of any tune if it had one in his huge catalogue he had in the 90's! Spent many times on the phone and at his gaff learning! Kev Fev.....he would get his magic box out at his house or at my little 50 people venue for 'rare' stuff...and play Emporer of My Babys Heart...Kell Osbournes Quicksand....and Bari Track and International GTO's......and not blink once!!! The best of what had gone before...and what was there to enjoy in the future! Waaay ahead of all our time he was! A student will become a Professor....and I gladly learned from them all...and am still a budding student............I recommend it!x Being exposed to all these different DJs....cos I went to dance to their stuff.....put the miles in and 'learnt' from them....it made me a DJ that was focused on the people in front of me....and apply my music I believed in with confidence. 'Respect' had already been earnt from the people by being WITH the people at functions! Never stood wiv 'the few' to be aloof from the crowd....so never had a barrier to overcome when getting on stage! DJing was an extension to being a Soulie......never ever put DJ first in me 'title'....Soulie....was suffice! DJing after earning that respect as a Soulie...was easy....and always will be...when among your own!x So the best advice I can give for any DJ really is...be part of it.....not 'it'!....unless your Butch...or Ady...or Fev......which we ain't!x I'm brown so have no chance anyway....so i'll carry on doing me own fing based on the above....I reckon!x @@ ~ LUV SOOTY X

When I came upon the scene in 1992 Kev...most of the big doo's were sown up by a few...who knew who. The doors were closed for up and coming 'kids'. Shifty...Len...and many other good DJ's who had the presence and tunes were being overlooked...or not even loojed at really. There was no 'door' in...unless you had a mate in charge I suppose.
