I didn't realise Plumby was a trained NS adjudicator I'm now worried about my own selections for the Anniversary event 🫣

Can't wait Kev - I literally was reminded that next year is the 30th Anniversary - wowser!!!!! I shared this earlier with Kev Murph and thought it would be a great memory for this event thread too - I think this was his first appearance as a DJ at Lowton? A piece of history either way Kev and Dave = Kev Murph & Dave Holt, also what a line up for that night eh! (BTW) I love the footnote - limited to 550, says it all doesn't it)

I love the abstract colour arrangement - you should take this up professionally, much better than the ashtrays made out of records Rob IMHO

Due to unforeseen circumstances there's a slight change in tonights' lineup - Mighty Mick Howard will take my place, get your dancing shoes at the ready 19:00 - Phil Dunn 19:45 - Bob Hitchcock 20:45 - Mick Howard 21:45 - Chalky 22:45 - Carl Hedberg 23:45 - Chris Churm

If I'm right Greg was playing the vocal version and Dave Flynn was playing the instrumental, The Mayfield Players??? However - I'm reliably informed by Dave Holt that Bob is indeed correct in the fact that Chris King played it first at one of the NYE nights either '98 or '99. Lowton released a Anniversary CD with the instrumental credited to the Bob Hinsley Strings
  6. Eddiefoster commented on Bazm's comment on an event in Alldayers

It was Dave Flynn when he came up to Lowton with the Capital Soul Club crew - not NYE but not sure of the exact event, more research required! Many thanks to my source of knowledge - Mr Baldwin

I'm very much looking forwards to the Lowton Anniversary Extravaganza on 1st Feb. I was truly honoured to be part of the team from the early days, which was certainly a springboard for my meagre DJing career (a very humble thanks to Kev, Dave & Paul for putting their trust in me 😚) Lowton was an amazing venue when you look back, a Friday Night Soul night with a regular attendance circa 500 I'm sure it was - someone can correct me! .... I remember looking out at the crowd one month from behind the deck and the atmosphere just blew me away ....... getting the needle onto the vinyl is always a challenge when your hand is shaking like a leaf! Lowton was a Friday night soul night where you could literally play any top nighter sound of the time and it would ram the floor - There were so many, I tried to think of one that isn't played so often at the moment (or I don't hear at least) Here you go
  8. The Ashton Ukrainian club has gone from strength to strength following the re-launch in 2021 and a move to Saturday night. For 2025 we're looking once again to continue delivery quality rare and underplayed soul from the residents and ever growing list of outstanding guests. Speaking of β€˜Rare & Underplayed Soul’ we use that phrase to capture what Ashton tries to deliver musically, which is worth expanding upon. Mainly it's an attempt to move away from the standard music policy strap lines we’re all so used to seeing like; Northern, 60s & 70s, Crossover, Modern, across the board etc. etc. whilst genuinely trying to capture an ethos. The words β€˜rare’ and β€˜underplayed’ are intended to apply both in their own right and together, it certainly isn't supposed to be limited rare records that are also underplayed……we should have added quality in there too LOL. In a nutshell you will hear all three combinations of the phrase on any given night at the Ukrainian Club; β€˜Rare’ (but not for rarities sake) β€˜Underplayed’ (but not because they’re not good enough) and of course β€˜Rare & Underplayed’ but, all with one eye on the dancefloor. We don’t have a music β€˜policy’, all our residents & guests are free to express themselves as they wish, which we believe adds to the magic. So simply expect a great night of quality soul music if you ever get the chance to join us at our friendly little club.

It's an interesting point you make Rhino and it made me think so I checked the relative value of Β£5 in 1995 compared to now and it works out as a tenner πŸ’―

Can't wait for this one: Three Rooms of Fun and quality soul music rather than 7 Rooms Of Gloom anytime for me! I'm gonna keep my eye on this thread for news of the various guest DJs mein host has got up his sleeve....never a dull moment at Culcheth and this episode especially as an all-dayer mixed in with the celebration of another Lowton Anniversary! What's not to like See you all there for the festival

  17. Eddiefoster reviewed Eddiefoster's review on an event in Soul Nights

I received an unsolicited message from one of the scenes nicest guys and a legend in my eyes, which is better than any review I could pen myself (thank you Sir Ste Smith it means a lot to the team): Ashton under Lyne Ukraine club. Light touch paper stand back and whoosh. Having become a must not miss night for me , it never ceases to amaze me when you get back home and think OMG how good was tonight and how are they going to match it next time out. Impossible you think then more often than not it just kind of gets better ( don't know if the soul fairies sprinkle you with magic dust as you walk in or what but something magical happens ) and last night was as good as it gets and what a way to see out 2024. Everyone involved with the club should take a bow. You have something very very special. Thank you 😊 πŸ™
