  1. The Ashton Ukrainian club has gone from strength to strength following the re-launch in 2021 and a move to Saturday night. For 2025 we're looking once again to continue delivery quality rare and underplayed soul from the residents and ever growing list of outstanding guests. Speaking of ‘Rare & Underplayed Soul’ we use that phrase to capture what Ashton tries to deliver musically, which is worth expanding upon. Mainly it's an attempt to move away from the standard music policy strap lines we’re all so used to seeing like; Northern, 60s & 70s, Crossover, Modern, across the board etc. etc. whilst genuinely trying to capture an ethos. The words ‘rare’ and ‘underplayed’ are intended to apply both in their own right and together, it certainly isn't supposed to be limited rare records that are also underplayed……we should have added quality in there too LOL. In a nutshell you will hear all three combinations of the phrase on any given night at the Ukrainian Club; ‘Rare’ (but not for rarities sake) ‘Underplayed’ (but not because they’re not good enough) and of course ‘Rare & Underplayed’ but, all with one eye on the dancefloor. We don’t have a music ‘policy’, all our residents & guests are free to express themselves as they wish, which we believe adds to the magic. So simply expect a great night of quality soul music if you ever get the chance to join us at our friendly little club.

  6. Open Office is a free alternative....not certain if you'd be happy using it but worth a try 👍 https://www.openoffice.org/product/base.html

A fantastic night - as already stated by Mick & Rob well deserved for Baz and all his efforts in promotion with all the unseen trials and tribulations in setting all this up for our enjoyment, brilliant to see so many in attendance. I spent most of the night in the Rare & Underplayed room but ventured into both the main room and Modern rooms many times to sample the atmosphere in both which by early evening was really growing and starting to bounce! A huge thanks as always from me to all the DJs and of course the crowd who without them all this would be pointless Here's my selections from the last hour - I promised myself to try and keep it in the ethos of the Kenwood Suite and the Rare & Underplayed side of things Cleveland Robinson - Boy (1006) Keith & Billie - Tastes Sour Don't It Richard Stoute - What Bag I'm In Johnny Rodgers - Make A Change The Informers - A Hard Way To Go Henry Moore - You Really Grab Me Cash McCall - More Power To You Solomon Burke - Save It Hayes Cotton - I'll Be Waiting (Claire) P.P. Arnold - Speak To Me Bo Fowler - The Upper Hand (Associated Recording Studios) The Clovers - For Days The Vontastics - Let Me Down Easy The O'Jays - That's Alright The Clovers - Try My Lovin' On You Gene Faith - My Baby's Missing The Fabulous Apollos - What's So Good To You Ron Kenoly - Moving On The Vibrations - Love In Them There Hills Cody Black - It's Our Time To Fall In Love Carl Hall - Is Your Love Going Or Growing Don & Debbi - I Can Be Happy Darrow Fletcher - I Think I'm Gonna Write A Song
  7. A few memorable flyers from way back when (Thanks Dave Holt)
  8. Well said Rob - I ran out of likes whatever that means so I'm back to typing again Are you sure he didn't pay you???
  9. I echo your thoughts Steve - it's easy to underestimate how much work goes into pulling these things together and Baz is one of the hardest working promoters out there, as well as a fantastic DJ able of pulling together amazing sets across the sub-genres which many are not aware of ..... deffo not a pigeon hole X-over and Modern DJ, in fact a Dark Horse .... his profile is missing from this thread isn't it!!! Footnote - Baz paid me to say all that
  10. Here's a map of the area - The Village Club is marked, plenty of parking available but if it's maxed out the best options are off the main road B5207 there's some parking near the green (see red arrow) and it's probably a 5min walk back to the club. I'm not sure Wigshaw Lane itself is a good place to park - it may even be restricted. Hope that helps.
  11. Yeah - Bob absolutely! Sweep It Out has dominated as the preferred side of many a DJ but Challenge My Love is total CLASS
  12. Yes Mick it'll be a great opportunity to relive some of the Kenwood Suite memories and I'm certain all the DJs will deliver with the same ethos ..can't wait...rare but not for the sake of it and underplayed but not because they aren't quality tunes...job done 👍
  13. Hey Ste happy birthday buddy 🎂
  14. I'm thinking of giving this a spin on Saturday
  15. What's not to like? - all that under one roof with like minded folk, bring it on
  16. Be good to catch up Calvin it's been quite a while!!!!
  17. I didn't realise Plumby was a trained NS adjudicator I'm now worried about my own selections for the Anniversary event 🫣
  18. Can't wait Kev - I literally was reminded that next year is the 30th Anniversary - wowser!!!!! I shared this earlier with Kev Murph and thought it would be a great memory for this event thread too - I think this was his first appearance as a DJ at Lowton? A piece of history either way Kev and Dave = Kev Murph & Dave Holt, also what a line up for that night eh! (BTW) I love the footnote - limited to 550, says it all doesn't it)
  19. I love the abstract colour arrangement - you should take this up professionally, much better than the ashtrays made out of records Rob IMHO
  20. Due to unforeseen circumstances there's a slight change in tonights' lineup - Mighty Mick Howard will take my place, get your dancing shoes at the ready 19:00 - Phil Dunn 19:45 - Bob Hitchcock 20:45 - Mick Howard 21:45 - Chalky 22:45 - Carl Hedberg 23:45 - Chris Churm
  21. If I'm right Greg was playing the vocal version and Dave Flynn was playing the instrumental, The Mayfield Players??? However - I'm reliably informed by Dave Holt that Bob is indeed correct in the fact that Chris King played it first at one of the NYE nights either '98 or '99. Lowton released a Anniversary CD with the instrumental credited to the Bob Hinsley Strings
  22. It was Dave Flynn when he came up to Lowton with the Capital Soul Club crew - not NYE but not sure of the exact event, more research required! Many thanks to my source of knowledge - Mr Baldwin
  23. I'm very much looking forwards to the Lowton Anniversary Extravaganza on 1st Feb. I was truly honoured to be part of the team from the early days, which was certainly a springboard for my meagre DJing career (a very humble thanks to Kev, Dave & Paul for putting their trust in me 😚) Lowton was an amazing venue when you look back, a Friday Night Soul night with a regular attendance circa 500 I'm sure it was - someone can correct me! .... I remember looking out at the crowd one month from behind the deck and the atmosphere just blew me away ....... getting the needle onto the vinyl is always a challenge when your hand is shaking like a leaf! Lowton was a Friday night soul night where you could literally play any top nighter sound of the time and it would ram the floor - There were so many, I tried to think of one that isn't played so often at the moment (or I don't hear at least) Here you go
