I know things have moved on drastically in the past 50 years since my youth, but in the early 70’s a label to me was just an indication of whether I may or may not like a track. I’d go to Violet May record shop in Sheffield where she would have the records in boxes categorised by label, I’d ask mrs Barkworth politely for Okeh, Ric-Tic or Motown subsidiary boxes (she wasn’t keen on you leafing through them) as I’d got others on those labels that I liked. It didn’t matter to me then what the design of the label was or if the Okeh label had la large 45 or a small one & I can’t comprehend now what difference it makes

I like the sleeves such as Trojan & Buddha that are an extension of the record label Although, with so much scope it’s difficult to understand why record companies chose to virtually copy other sleeves, you’d think they would want to differentiate themselves It’s also interesting to see how the sleeve designs change with time

I have ave a couple of UK demo’s; I Don’t Need No Doctor by Ray Charles on HMV & Lightning Strikes by Lou Christie on MGM both of which are stamped with the name Laurie Sellstrom. Does anyone know who he is, or was? My assumption is that he was a DJ, but that’s a pure guess

I can get away with Richard Berry at scooter events, not tried it at a Soul night as for the Joan Berry track, I don’t think I have ever the ability to move my feet fast enough to keep up

I suppose that’s the problem with “guesting” at venues that you haven’t visited previously

That’s the kind of stuff I grew up on. The tracks that you’ve never heard before that you can’t help but move to Maybe we just need a time machine or fountain of youth. Or better still young blood in the scene that pack the dance floor so we can convince ourselves that we’d be up there doing it, but there’s not enough room to do our moves justice

Just checked it out. It’s about 170 bpm, hard to think that we kept that pace up track after track. Another great record that deserves to be danced to

I’ve been sorting out my record boxes today to update the DJ box & came across this I had to have it at the time for the Wigan history & Tammi Terrell connection. I forked out around £200 for it at the time & it bombed every time I played it out, so it’s sat in the box ever since Just wondering what other people have bought as a “Must Have” that never makes it to a venue

Back in the late 70’s I’d always start & close my sets with instrumentals, usually “The In Crowd”, Ramsey Lewis & Mood Mosaic’s “Touch of Velvet” to close. If nobody danced they were perfect to speak over & if the danced it was a bonus As for instro’s to dance to, in my younger days when I threw myself around a little more “You Can’t Sit Down” by Phil Upchurch Combo used to do it for me
