  1. D'you think he'll have the same trousers on?! Maybe we could open a book on the odds of different types of leg wear appearing 😁
  2. Agree totally but it does make you wonder where they'll come from? Certainly I can't see anyone under 40, say, watching Giovanni on the BBC and thinking "that looks like something I'd like to check out" - probably quite the opposite. Perhaps if they saw some of the clips posted here they might be interested but this is a small obscure corner of the internet that no one is going to stumble across so I don't think any remaining "underground" part of the scene is going to suffer as a result of this.
  3. He's through to the callbacks episode which looks like it's probably on on the 1st or 8th February after all the initial heats. Dunno how much airtime he'll get on that one though because there'll be loads of other acts in it as well. Most of them a lot more spectacular.
  4. There's another young, dancing DJ - Alex Gallagher in Nottingham, fantastic and about 19 years old.
  5. Yeah Simon! And he's only been dancing to Northern Soul for about 5 years. He's got it alright.
  6. Can't speak for the 50+ returnees but among younger people fashion is totally 'post modern' now, there are no separate cults like there used to be. My son and his friends mix and match from everywhere, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, today. I know a few younger people on the NS scene too and some do wear bags etc. but at 18 or so they look pretty good in them, they couldn't give a toss what year they came from or if they were in style for long or not. Most of this thread would be totally baffling for them. They've seen people wearing them, they think they look good, they buy some, they wear them. Of course with older people there's a lot of baggage - nostalgia or not, false sense of recalling the past or not etc.
  7. The link to the actual tune is broken though, what was it?
  8. I bow to your superior knowledge; and the lyrical delivery clearly owes something to Chuck Berry. I'd bet the Kingsmen must of heard that as well, theirs sounds much more like it.
  9. Interesting theory but I had heard it was taken from this; René Touzet's version sounds much more like the Kingsmen's version of the riff - incredibly like it:
  10. So which copy was this then? https://www.candgnews.com/news/record-store-sells-rare-vinyl-to-third-man-records-founder-jack-white-107476
  11. Willie and The Mighty Magnificents and Frankie Crocker posted above by @Tomangoes are right out of the 'Tighten Up' mould, I'm sure theres another one just like those first two.
  12. The Small Faces always reminded me of Carl Douglas, not so sure listening to the back to back now, it's just one trumpet bit for about 3 seconds.
  13. Another total theft that Motown would have an excellent case to pursue; Lou Reed from Marvin Gaye:
  14. Absolutely love both of them but can't hear it myself? The middle 8 of Little Ann (where it's in double time) is sort of the same beat though and there's a nice mixture of minor and major chords in both.
  15. Another direct steal
  16. Clearly a pretty much a direct steal!
  17. Actually that reminds me I once read an interview with John Lennon where he was talking about the Beatles song "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)" and said he was trying to write a Four Tops kind of thing but then changed it into a comedy record. I can hear what he meant but think actually it's a copy of something but can't put my finger on the actual song. Any ideas? Just the intro.
  18. You're right, it certainly sounds like it was the inspiration for it. They changed it enough to make it it's own thing though.
  19. By huge co-incidence a friend just sent me this link, just goes to show the kind of thing that is likely to get crowdfunding on Kickstarter. Not obviously mass market either!
  20. Another one - it's only the intro but I always think the Masqueraders is Milton Wright when it first comes on. Clearly not but if you took the strings off . . . .
  21. It's the same thing really except Kickstarter does it for you, as it says above you have to enter bank details but if not funded no money is taken. The problem with taking deposits is you need to set up a bank account, deal with tax on it, collect the money, keep people informed, refund it all if it doesn't happen etc. Which is a load of work if you just want to put a book out and don't normally do it as a business.
  22. Doesn't look like it's going to get funding either - 2 days left and only about 30% I can't see it doing it. Kickstarter is great but you really have to push it everywhere and this hasn't been seen that much. A friend had a book published but they drummed up a lot of interest online before even going onto kickstarter.
  23. How do you think stockbrokers make their money.
  24. An interesting update to this; Richard Searling has just put in place a ban on cameras and video cameras at the Blackpool Tower events. "Just a quick note regarding filming at the Blackpool Tower. After serious consideration, and effective from May next year, we will not be allowing any cameras into the venue. However, filming on your personal smart phones is OK. The reason for this decision is that any "professional" filming must first have the consent of the people they are filming, and if not it then becomes an invasion of their privacy when images are subsequently posted up without that person's prior agreement. I hope you understand the reasoning, and with smart phones so proficient these days, this still allows you to gather and take away your personal memories. I will post a refresher note about "no cameras" before the May 1-3rd weekender so that none are inadvertently brought into the building and have to then be retained by security." The subject of videoing has become very controversial of late, mainly due to one outlet which has come in for a lot of criticism, abuse and even cyberbullying. Although that's only one side of the story.
  25. A few cinemas are repeating it, well two in Birmingham are next week. So check your local independent cinemas there may still be an opportunity to see it on the big screen. Well worth watching, it was obviously an authorised film so was never going to show anyone in a bad light but on the other hand an unauthorised one is never going to get such close access to people like Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson. Personally I would have liked to have seen more of the performances especially the Miracles and Stevie Wonder ones which are either not on Youtube or are in terribly quality. Maybe they'll be on the DVD?
