  1. James, if you wanna let some guy walk all over you by removing your 45 from the deck cos you respect him then it's up to you. If he has a hissy fit or an onset of PMT and you're happy to forget it {although you haven't have you?] again it's up to you. You brought up this odd idea of a pecking order where you wouldn't play 45s associated with other dj's on the same bill as yourself. Just reminded me of royalty and class where people don't challenge behaviours due to social status. I obviously have respect for certain people but it is based on how they conduct themselves and not on what they have in their collection and how big a name they are. Can you honestly say that since that episode you hold that guy in the same esteem. Im certainly not paranoid because none of this affects me in any way but you seem to wanna do the right thing by inventing some kinda courtly ritual which IMO there's no need to do. If you've got the 45s then play them. I think most of us would just think JT's got so and so's big c/u. Lucky bastard,I wish I had it. ROD
  2. James, Im really not mocking anything you've said nor am I contradicting myself. The words "re-activated it" shoulda been in parenthesis but it was late, the wife was demanding sex and all my attention was on feigning a headache!! Putting aside the playing of boots or VC's by big name dj's which everybody agrees is a no-no, what Im having trouble identifying with is this imaginary Royal Circle where dj's are like titled peers deserving of varying degrees of deference that appears to exist in your head, and by the replies on here is a perception not really shared by many others. As you appear to be basing your whole idea on who played what when I think I,and others, are not being unfair to point out that some of the examples you refer to are merely arbitrary and have no basis at all in reality. Again the guy who took your 45 off is a knobhead, although Im sure I remember something similar with Levine at the Mecca so it's unusual but not a first. However, if some other dj plays something you've got or you return the favour then neither of you have any grounds for complaint. Freedom of Expression, a competitive market whatever. It's really a no-brainer. You're getting booked and paid to entertain the crowd, not to get involved in some weird courtly ritual with your fellow dj's. ROD
  3. Gotta agree with Dave Moore there cos I don't want a slap!! It's the guys scouring the States etc who are finding most of these 45s. They know what they're looking for and they know the sound. They know they're good. I've found a couple myself. All the dj has to do is play it. Respect to Anderson and the like. ROD
  4. Dave, honestly mate, if you've got it on original you have to ask no one's permission to play it. Getting to a venue and checking out what's been played before you go on is completely different of course. That's a courtesy you owe to the paying crowd and the promoter, and you can then avoid too much duplication. ROD
  5. I missed that bit about Honey&Bees "Dynamite EXploded" Andy Dyson or JT's 45. I thought I'd heard that at Wigan. It's on my wants list from around that time anyway. Are you having a laugh? ROD
  6. No James I retract nothing. You made a statement which Mel has just highlighted. I assume that is what you imagine to be the case. It IS an oldie. What's a "bit of an oldie"?. Most people I know wouldn't associate it with Butch as their connection with Northern goes back a fair way and as for floorpacker it was in it's day so why would it be any different now played in the right spot. I 've heard it out on occassions since it's heyday long before Butch re-activated it and it filled the floor along with myriads of other popular oldies. As for this deference and hierarchy you've conjured up then you're only as good as your last spot. Taking your record off the deck is going too far obviously but then that's what happens when deference goes too far, and the dj feels he's bigger than the music. There's plenty of big name dj's who are no longer around or respected. ROD
  7. "Going to a Go-Go" still does that to me after all these years. ROD
  8. Im with Sean and Pete S on this. Apart from "big" djs playing boots, and attempting to pass them off as just another rare original in their set I assume, the whole thing is ridiculous. As for Johnny Howard/Butch connection there isn't one except in JT's rather fervid and troubled imagination. As I think Pete pointed out at one time all djs played roughly the same set. How many of these djs discovered the records they play anyway. Note; buying them for lots of money offa someone else is NOT finding your own 45s. ROD

Ah Nev, I didn't single you and Daz out because you'd questioned the high prices John obtains on his auction but because the way I read your posts neither of you had taken part in one and I was just pointing out that I had and it worked no different than an Ebay auction. I've gotta be honest and say that the thought that some manipulation may be occuring had crossed my mind. There was a thread on here ages ago talking about dodgy bidding on Ebay[which was news to me!!] and of course there was a rumour about a rare 45 John was selling on consignment which to his credit he removed as soon as it came to his attention. I agree with everything you say and I definitely think the lower end 45s are way over priced which IMO creates a stagnant market whereby they sit in some US dealer's inventory and don't find their way to their natural market. I think Chris Anderton mentioned his experience with this on his last trip. I noticed that beginning to happen back in the early 90's when Sousson brought out his guide where up until then common Ric-Tic 45s were rated at £15 and at the time you couldn't give them away!! ROD
  10. For those who ordered 45s they were all sent out yesterday by 1st class recorded mail, except for yours Geoff cos I didn't have your address at the time of posting. Thanks a lot everybody. ROD

For Nev and Daz I won "Sister Lee" for £350 off John's auction about 2 years ago. I bid once early on and forgot about it until email notification received. It was just a straightforward auction with no "after-time" bidding that I was aware of or involved in. I was happy with the price cos it is reasonably hard to get in Mintish condition nowadays. I am though amazed at what he does get for a lot of the auction items and it looks like that is the general consensus of opinion. Currently IMO the Frankie Beverley seems to be OTT. As has been said though John has put a hell of a lot of work into that site and I bet Im not the only one who uses it as a reference to hear 45s that are available elsewhere cheaper, so for that he should be congragulated. I kinda agree with Tone about the prices on the higher end but if John reflects the auction prices in his "guide", then the book is just that, a guide. I think where I would fall out with John is at the lower end. On going through Ebay the other day I noticed the Artistics "The Chase is on" advertised as $60 or $70 in "Manship" https://cgi.ebay.com/NORTHERN-SOUL-45-RECOR...1QQcmdZViewItem It didn't sell and latest copy that did on Ebay went for $9.50 [in lesser condition than copy that didn't sell - go figure!!!]. Pete mentioned that Magestics 45 earlier on too and we all know loads that can be obtained much cheaper or don't sell at all. I just wonder why John doesn't take that into account when revising his guide. And I guess why other UK dealers quote John's prices but never say "on Ebay for $5" !! ROD

  13. I always keep a close eye on the dance floor. Luckily there's invariably no one on it to obscure my view. ROD
  14. I want to encourage younger new bloods into collecting, rather than it just being the preserve of pot bellied 50 year olds Hey, my wife doesn't collect!! OK,Steve we'll agree to differ. To me it's just a symptom of today's market in everything, advertising, double glazing, gas suppliers etc where what is promised is often not what is delivered and the marketing borders on the misleading. I do agree with Pete though and I said this on the "bootleg/Amnesia" thread that it sometimes appears that when cases such as this are highlighted they can seem very selective as to who is being condemned. ROD
  15. That bloody awful True Image. "Im not over you yet" I can claim credit for that gem, along with Dave Withers finding 6 copies in Atlanta in mid-90's. Along with Curtis that I sold to Richard, I look upon those two 45s as my finest achievment in the cause of 60's soul. Not one but two Trojan Horses!! ROD
  16. I consider taking my boots off an acceptable substitution for foreplay. ROD
  17. Just had a quick look at his ads. Dr Truelove is on Soul Mafia but doesn't say re-issue. A lot of albums say orig. So not quite sure what you're talking about really Steve. I saw the ad before I read it on here. I knew it wasn't an original but there's enough info there, esp. RE to show any collector that it's not an original. What kinda person spends loadsa money without any idea of what they're buying. Is it dishonest. Not as far as I can see because on seeing the ad there's nothing there to suggest it's the original. Is it a marketing ploy/sales blurb. Deffo yes. The use of "rare" confirms that. However, Steve I do agree that he is taking advantage of gullible people by auctioning it and not now withdrawing it and making plain to the bidders that it's not what they hoped it was. Everyone is blaming the seller but I think the bidders are equally at fault. If no one bid on all these boots on Ebay they'd eventually disappear cos there'd be no profit in it. ROD
  18. There's a picture, both sides are listed and RE in block letters is a common abbreviation for "Re-issue" Maybe we should also make sure that the bidders don't have access to sharp implements and are safetly back on the ward by 8pm. ROD
  19. "I think you mean 7 minutes" My wife's answer to James Fountain ROD
  20. I didn't really notice much different this weekend. I don't buy anything like the numbers you do,Pete but I got IMO 3 nice 45s in Mintish condition for just under £55 inc postage. Renaldo Domino SMASH WDJ Marvin Smith BRUNSWICK "Fading memories" YDJ Superbs "....Buddy" DORE 704 DJ I know they're not exactly the most in-demand titles around but again IMO they're quality records that are not readily available over here. Brownie's guide has them in total at £115 and JM's site has regular issues of Domino and Smith for £60 [plus postage] in total. So don't think I'll be getting worried just yet. Still a good place to pick up nice 45s at a price probably cheaper than in the UK. I was the only bidder on all these 45s. I have lost that Domino 45 before now for higher than the $19.99 I paid so from my perspective it looks like bidding is falling off. ROD
  21. I'd forgot about that Bob!! You woulda been so disappointed if you'd won it. ROD
  22. I have it on Blue D-Town,Baz but can't do clips. I think "pretty dire" sums it up. Uptempo and very white sounding. Kinda Reflections on a bad day. Very difficult to find though; took me years. You're missing nothing ROD
  23. Had a look at auction and still showing $5260. I notice it's Burl'one. Bought a VG+ Terrifics offa him once. Completely knackered. Did get my money back though with no quibble but IMO grading maybe not one of his strong points. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with bid record. Im assuming third bidder #5 had his maximum bid just over $5,000 and both "snipes" from #'s 1 and 6 had been set also over that. Any idea what it did sell for then. $5160? ROD
  24. I don't know about a good method for the younger DJ. First you gotta amass your hot box. Any idea of outlay required? ROD
  25. Mark, Im pretty sure it means selling whatever is not a new hot title and with the money buying whatever is in demand with the DJs and probably insanely expensive. So classic oldies out the window, popular but played out newies bye-bye and limited shelf-life for anything left. If I may say something like used to happen years ago. I guess someone like Sam uses this method to a degree. I think he's swapped oldies with John M in the past for something current, or a good unknown. It's not really going to appeal to someone who likes the music, collects the 45s and wants to keep them IMO ROD
