Will Smoking Ban Improve Venues?
Simon, what about those desperate individuals I've noticed at certain clubs who huddle in pathetic groups around a 1980's 12". Is there any hope for these people or should we just shun them? ROD

Will Smoking Ban Improve Venues?
Interesting use of the "Allo Allo" German there ,Stuart. I believe Hitler was a staunch anti-smoker. Unfortunately Stalin wasn't so there goes my chance to make the point that smokers are generally more laid back. IMO of course. "Ernst, zer ist ein Beer Hall down ze strasse in Munich ver ze cigaretten ist nicht verboten und ve muss close it today" "Vell OK, Adolf. Just az long az you know vat you're getting into" ROD

Thank you Stuart for that contribution. Again I wouldn't dispute your facts or figures but as for the effect of "smog" I do wonder if we are told the whole truth about what chemicals we breathe in on an everyday basis. I know the Bhopal pasticide plant accident was an extreme example of leakage into the environment but when you consider what industry is pumping into the atmosphere daily and do we know what the cumulitive effect is. "What you had was a gas that significantly reduced the body's immune system and laid it open to disease," says Shyam Agrawal, the director of the Navodaya oncology centre in Bhopal, who treated the sick and dying 20 years ago as a medical student. "Within India, Bhopal has one of the highest lung cancer rates in men, while women show very high rates of breast and cervical cancer. The cancer rates are significantly higher in gas-affected populations." ROD

No argument about the risks from passive smoking other than what is the risk to you if the smokers were in a seperate well ventilated room, or if the odd pub in each area was allowed to remain smoking. When you walk down the street and pass a smoker and catch some of the smoke is that unacceptable. I guess it would be cos there's still some risk there. I agree you're not going to catch liver disease from a hardened drinker but you may get hit over the head with a brick or mown down by a car by people under the influence. All Im saying is that if we're clamping down on the effects of smoking then why are you minimising the effects of alcohol. Because it's still socially acceptable? Im at a loss to understand why Im being unreasonable if I don't fancy travelling to a venue to stand outside, especially with our weather. I have the choice to go outside or just give it a miss and I choose the latter. ROD

Will Smoking Ban Improve Venues?
Donna, I would have thought most people on here had direct experience of a friend or relative dying from cancer in some form. My grandad died from lung cancer annd he did smoke. My dad died from bowel cancer and he didn't. My dad also worked in food processing plant as a printer and it was non-smoking back in the 60's. Not a regular pub-goer either so his exposure to passive smoking wouldn't have been excessive. I really have no objection to banning smoking as a health risk and for the general good. What I object to is the smelly/stinky argument which has been used a lot on this thread. That is a personal dislike. I also then fail to see how those who want it banned on health grounds then ignore the costs of alcohol in terms of illness, crime and family breakdown. Not really joined up thinking is it. I don't question the research that has been done into the effects of smoking but I can't help wondering whether there are other factors that come into play. We're living longer so more chance of illness in later life and it does seem that cancer may have come to the fore in the 20th Century as pollution from traffic and industry has risen. I don't really have the time to look into historical background but what were the cancer rates in the 19th Century. Don't ever remember reading one of those "classic" novels and hearing it mentioned. There was consumption but I think that was TB but maybe it was a catch-all term for any kind of wasting disease. Anyway I am agreeing with you to a large extent. I wouldn't dream of smoking where it wasn't allowed or where the majority of people objected, and have spent my time at many a party in the garage with fellow pariahs. To use the "stinky" argument I wouldn't want to go out though where I couldn't smoke as I guess for me it masks the smell of beer or wine on people's breath. Red wine is particularly unpleasant to me as is that stale beer smell in clubs and pubs. ROD

Will Smoking Ban Improve Venues?
No I won't be going out much that's true but it doesn't bother me. If I want to socialise I have plenty of other opportunities and I did understand perfectly that it's a blanket ban. Right now it's legal to smoke and unless it states clearly that it's a No Smoking area I am doing nothing wrong within the Law. Any arrogance is on the part of the non-smoking lobby who seem to think that their wishes and personal dislikes should take precedence over that. I have my priorities. I will be flying to NY in Feb to dj at a mate's wedding so I won't be smoking for a lot of that period. However if I don't want to spend my money going out to northern clubs come July 1st I can't really see how that calls into question my enjoyment of the music. Finally the residue of drink and drugs are street violence, car accidents, crowded A&E's, muggings and burglaries, litter and vomit over our streets. ROD

Donna,Im pretty sure I said I wouldn't bother going and putting you through it. Unfortunately I don't have that choice when I walk down the street and I'm surrounded by car fumes. Of course I'd not be trying to ban cars. You can walk away from drunks. Again unfortunately over the past 54 years I've met my share of drunks that you can't walk away from. Have you had a look at the relationship between drugs and crime. I know it's acceptable on the Northern Scene and a bit of speed or coke never killed anybody!!!! However if I want to be in the same room with irresponsible people who think half hourly trips to the gents and then careering around the room like a whirling dervish is having a good time I'll join a kiddy's playgroup. So while it's still legal I'll smoke on the odd occasions I go out and when it's not I'll stay away. Of course two rooms would be an alternative but then compromise is not on the agenda with this particular bete noir. ROD

Some quite forceful views from the non-smoking lobby and as a smoker I wouldn't feel welcome in a non-smoking environment run for their benefit. We'll still stink and have nobody to talk to when we come back from having a fag outside. I for one will be giving it a miss. I guess then the holier than thou brigade can turn up in their cars[pollution], drink to their heart's content [health risk] and indulge in the artificial stimulant [childish bravado supporting criminality and boy do some of you look stupid under the influence] of their choice. New Kent 45s
Ady, of course "Too much...." on Money. Re your reply to the request for Ben E. King track, you'd think some money would be better than no money so why the f..k prevent you from packaging their material and at least making someone a bit better off. Is it just the big companies that have this attitude. I think you mentioned RCA as well as being expensive to lease. From what I've read over the years you seem to do most of the digging so do these companies incur any expense at all when you issue CDs/45s. I hate to say it but maybe these owners deserve to have their product issued illegally if they're gonna take a dog in the manger attitude. Still if they had no faith in it 30 odd years ago what chance now if you pitch it to them. Maybe it's your cockney wide-boy accent and demeanour. You need somebody well-spoken, articulate and sophisticated, like say from Clitheroe. Always the red wine with the tripe!! ROD

One Moment In Time
I think we sent tapes to a guy in Birmingham but can't remember his name. No John, they came from Bob Klein who was a [silent] partner of Tom in Airwave records. As usual I can't remember all the intricate details of what went on but I guess they must have been acetates cos Im sure Bob said they kinda took them home unofficially to tape. Whether they all went back to Motown vaults I don't know. There was another LA dealer who was selling Motown acetates sometime in early 80's. Forgot his name too but he was quite well-known at the time. Maybe he got them from Tom who had a pretty lavish lifestyle to finance. Doesn't surprise me about Sousson. He knew Tom well and Bob told me it was from Tom's collection that Sousson "acquired" that copy of Frank Wilson. I think an Andantes went walkabout at the same time. ROD

New Kent 45s
Well Simon they might get annoyed/miffed but we're talking legal issue here. Im no longer sure what happens when a "big" 45 gets re-issued or booted. In the old days they'd be dropped from the set to make way for something new. Not a particularly bad thing. I've got that Trannels thing which was pretty in demand at one time but Im not annoyed that it's come out as a legit re-issue. C'est la vie!! ROD

I'd be very happy Ady, at £10 for unissued stuff. "Soldier Boy" released version? Thanks for the reply. Almost seems I know what Im talking about for a change!! ROD

New Kent 45s
Thing is Stuart if you put out stuff that's already released then aren't the originals only brigade,me included, going to ignore them. But those unissued tracks hopefully should attract a following. Easy for me to say cos it's not my money going into it but I'd give it a go. I don't really care if Lately gets a re-issue but honestly I don't think it would sell that well as IMO it's not a track to set dancefloor alight. I think Ady is looking for something much more popular. ROD

New Kent 45s
I deffo think that Lately 45 that Stuart recommends wouldn't sell. It's dull, monotonous, too slow and I ....er... have got it already. Stuart you tosser!!! ROD

New Kent 45s
Ady,do you have a record of how many copies of each 45 you've shifted so far. It's a bit of a sad indictment of the current scene if you're suggesting that the unreleased stuff which wouldn't be available any other way would not sell 500 copies. In addition to the Tobi Lark I fancy that "Soldier Boy" thing from Money. There's a thread starting about unreleased Pretenders on Carnival too. Think I paid £4.99 or £5.99 for last Kent 45s I bought. Could you hike price to get a lower break-even point. It may be there's more demand for 70's tracks than 60's. Unique Blend/Houston Outlaws springs to mind. Would have thought that would have sold a few. ROD

One Moment In Time
So Mikey that would have been in mine and Dave's spot, so thank you for that. I don't know where this different speed lark arose. That first cut was taken from a tape done by Tom Depierro's business partner from original tapes/acetates [don't know which really] that they'd listened to but rejected for that first unissued Motown compilation "From the Vaults" I certainly didn't speed it up or slow it down. Wouldn't know how to. A reasonably interesting aside. The guy who pressed the acetates for us, I forget his name, was the producer of that Maisonettes 45 that came out after he'd done the job for us. On that first tape was that instr of "On the avenue" done by Jimmy Ruffin as "In the neighbourhood". If you listen to that Maisonettes it sounds like that track but altered around. ROD

Amesnia Records Back Up & Running On Ebay
I did notice, Ady that you didn't have any objection to cutting an unissued track from a Kent CD to play out [Additions thread]. I guess it's a bit of promotion for the CD and any extra sales benefits the original owner of the work. I think that's a generous open-minded attitude to take. Might be a bit of a problem if we all decided to do it. With your blessing of course. I bought those Kent 45s that were previously unissued. Any more plans to put others out on vinyl. I'd like that Tobi Lark "True true love" please. End of Jan would be fine as Xmas will be paid for by then. ROD

Amesnia Records Back Up & Running On Ebay
I just read in the Guardian that it's reckoned downloading will see CDs obsolete within 5 years. Are current CDs all legit?. Thought there was some doubt about that. CDs are glorified cassettes anyway and 6T's NS is vinyl based. I wouldn't buy a boot but have no objection to those who do. I know royalties etc argument but as Netspeaky says that also applies to the sale of originals too. Money is all in our pockets. I blame the record labels and licensees. Take that Motown unissued stuff. If it's OK to supply certain DJ's with advance releases then why do the rest of us have to settle for a CD. I've bought the vast majority of them but I'd really like some tracks on vinyl, including that booted Monitors. Unfortunately it looks cheap and nasty. Maybe Universal should be thinking more about their target audience and less about cheapest format to maximise profit, or better still give me the f..king job. I do have a little experience in that I found that first batch and got them heard and talked about back in the 80's.!!! Dealing with the owners of the original material is a nightmare in my experience. I got Gino Washington to re-issue that "Rat Race". I asked him to put this good unissued instrumental he had on tape on the b-side and he didn't and then didn't send us all the copies we paid for but sent re-issues of the Tomangoes instead. I doubt if Tomangoes saw any of that money. So let's condemn Amnesia for not taking the legit route but equally those companies that treat their audience with disdain. ROD

Wilxy, try contacting Adam at https://www.soulsupermarket.co.uk/ I got a copy off him for £20 couple of days ago. He had it on set sale £25 Ebay but took my offer. Im pretty sure that wasn't first time he'd listed it so he may have a few. Worth checking anyway. ROD
