Tonite - Northern Soul Bbc Living For The Weekend
I guess most wouldn't argue with that as long as those same people aren't also trying to tell you how much they love it all in an organic sense! Cheers, Mark R

Until they gather enough people to get it right, perhaps it should be called "Northern Soul: Living For Selected Weekends" Cheers, Mark R

Is a mention of NS influence on 80's pop music the best that can be done? It would be better to say nothing at all than say that!! Cheers, Mark R

Tonite - Northern Soul Bbc Living For The Weekend
Ian D, I realise that there was probably a remit for the program that didn't include the 'quiet' years, but can you tell me what your involvement was in the 80's & 90's? Serious question. .......do any of the guys involved EVER think to say to Aunty Beeb "you know you really out to talk to X, Y & Z about this, that & the other to tell the full story"? Do you think that happens, or is there an element of self-preservation in that it would take the spotlight off them? I'm not too fussed in the sense that I'm not really part of the rare soul scene, but I can understand why people might be seething about these programs, I really can! Ifind myself seriously empathising with them......I feel their pain so to speak. I'm sure the "we've sorted it all out now" comment had a good many blowing off steam!! Cheers, Mark R

Like to get it on its first issue... Mal

Ms. Jody. Echo Records 2014 Cd
I don't think any of us would disagree re electronic backing, but there are acceptable examples of the genre. I think I probably buy less of it these days......not for this reason, just for the reason that it doesn't seem to cross my path nowadays like it once did. Steve Dolan used to push a lot of it on his Steves Soul Sounds site, but it seems to have gone quiet over there. I still tend to keep up with new releases from the likes of Donnie Ray...... Has this had a mention on Soul Source? Not new but the first legit release on vinyl(?), released in Canada only for RSD I would have expected this to garner interest. I finally remembered to track one down....... https://www.recordstoreday.com/Page/2294 Cheers, Mark R

Hall & Oakes Northern Tunes?
Sorry, as nothing to do with Hall & Oates, but the thread reminded me of this modern soul spin from the early Fleetwood weekenders, when it was in the first of the modern room locations....................killer!!! Cheers, Mark R

Djing
I suppose that the bottom line is, we should accept that there are many ways to be a good DJ, largely dependent on audience and genre of music. Cheers, Mark R
-
Djing
And that's exactly the danger of mixing.........being more concerned with what goes with what, rather than how good the "what" is!! Cheers, Mark R
-
Djing
But that's already not true in so many other ways, so "complicating" it in the way I'm saying would hardly be a crime!! Cheers, Mark R

Djing
For me, any change in terms of the Northern scene would not necessarily relate to the technical side of DJ'ing, but would be more about thinking outside the box in terms of choices, style and the like. The best DJ's have an edge, or something different about them.....Soul Sam is a perfect example in a variety of ways.......enthusiasm, going out on a limb to risk things......playing a full modern set at Wigan etc.....in some ways he's loathed by as many that love him......but he will be remembered more than most for both reasons. It can sometimes be too predictable and safe.......too concerned with what people think short term at the expense of ploughing a furrow. Look at the furore of Happy getting a spin at Prestatyn.......why not!! Not necessarily that record, but you get my drift...... Just one point......earlier someone said why change a record with EQ or a different mix etc........well what do you think an alternate take from the tape vaults or on an acetate is? Oh, but that's alright because it's rare and no-one else has got it......and that's all that matters! ! Cheers, Mark R

I understand what you're saying, but the point is they're not mutually exclusive, there is some crossover, if I can use that word without totally confusing everyone!! LOL Cheers, Mark R

It already happens to an extent on the modern scene. ...... Cheers, Mark R
