News: Sad News Dave McCadden RIP

I used to knock about with Dave in the mid lSeventies via Wigan Casino and where ever else the music was or go on wild two or three day benders in the pubs of Manchester etc.and get up to some dodgy things! I always felt at the time he was underrated when I used to read his poetry etc at his mum's house in Prestwick. Very witty and his Northern Soul articles and quips always made me laugh. I was told recently about Dave's death and was numb for two days. I was only just thinking about trying to get hold of him again after 20yrs or so. Great bloke and I had some crazy times and good memories of Dave. He filled his life and did not mope about Phil

Just re-read your post and think I didn't understand it right. I thought you was saying that if it was a hoax, Panasonic would've issued a statement denying the rumors... Anyway, plenty of decks in the market, vinyl and turntables are far from death. I think electronic-dance DJs are the ones that choose Techs over other decks for technical reasons. You can get a direct drive turntable with pitch, anti-skating etc (and more) for less than half the price, so I don't know what's the big deal.

Why? I bet more than a couple of folks rushed to buy one or two after they heard the news. Plus you get loads of free publicity...

News: Another Nail In The Vinyl Coffin

SO IT MAY BE THE MK 6 ONLY THAT THEY ARE STOPPING HOPEFULLY UPDATE: Panasonic is in fact ceasing production of the SL-1200MK6 model specifically, while other Technics turntable models will live on. Phew! Sincere apologies for the misunderstanding. [Tokyo Reporter] https://gizmodo.com/5...nics-turntables ALL VERY CONFUSING BUT THIS IS FROM MTV https://rapfix.mtv.co...nds-production/ The Technics SL-1200 turntable is dead. Long live the Technics SL-1200 turntable. Actually, the iconic turntable of choice for DJs, both professional and amateur, for almost four decades isn't completely gone. Gizmodo is now reporting that Panasonic, owner of the Technics brand, is only ceasing production of the SL-1200MK6 model while others will still be available. DJs can breathe a sigh of relief, but this isn't the first time that rumors swirled, saying that the beloved wheels of steel were knocking on death's door. Just last year there was talk of their demise. Over the years companies like Vestax and Gemini, and many more, tried in vain to create turntables that matched the specification of the Technics 1200—mainly its direct drive motor with big time torque and a tank like exterior—and while some did, none could match the devotion DJs had to the original. The fact that, after all these years, this specific turntable is still the standard—it was introduced in 1972 and while there have been tweaks in the past, it is essentially the same—is nothing short of phenomenal. Think about it, the 1st generation iPod, which debuted in 2001, is a fossil compared to the latest sixth generation, which Apple stopped updating in 2008. Nothing is for certain, nothing lasts forever ... but with vinyl sales increasing—independent retailers love to sell them on their stoops in Brooklyn—don't count out the Technics SL1200 just yet.

Very sad news. Got a lovely Technics 1210 sitting downstairs. Love it to bits! Don't know if you've seen my 'I've seen the future' post in 'Look at your box' forum. Recently spotted a Laser turntable that plays your vinyl without a needle. Pretty pricey at the moment, but I reckon that is what we will all end up with once current suppliers stop making quality decks. Would be interested to hear what these laser turntables sound like. Anyone tried them? Ferrett

Only got one myself I think is worthy..... used to buy a lot of 45s off Bob Catteneo when i was living in California very early 80s..... Basically I used to hand over my wages on a saturday morning and get digging in his garage... he used to pull out stuff from his own collection like Johnny James and Masquaders, etc etc.I used to hit gold very time I went there.......... any way he has all these Elvis figures in china with whisky in 'em. for the record fairs.. finds out they are worth the same empty..We gotta drink this shit Bob kept saying ...... horrid whisky, but me being polite.. can't say no, he has a mate there too... we end up twisting all these elvis heads off ( the caps )and drinking this shite whisky.. mad listening to all these great doo wop tunes and ballads from Bob's radio shows, slugging Elvis whisky..... proper all night, session, all of us twisted listening to Bob telling stories about all the SF soul artists, Villa Records revue he put on in his high school with the Performers and the Magicians, he knew all the artists locally,Eddie Foster was a mate, you name it that old boy knew them.... He was harking back to when all these titles we asked for he had in multiples, tales of piles of records in skips etc etc.... never forget that night,,, Bob packed in the records game soon after , lovely old boy........ I ended up spending a fortune again that time and brought back the most incredible 45s........ Small time tale in the scale of things but.... Cheers Disco Bob !

Fair play to You Nicola / Andy. I'll have a copy please. I'd expect this will have a wider market than Soul - a big 'digger' community out there I'd expect. Best of luck to you.

They are treasured & important memories for both of us Eddie, i remember when he told us he was dying & we reminisced about our weekly trio meetings for the latest installments of his week. No money, sometimes sleeping rough, always girlfriend trouble & he said that our little gatherings at 6 am every week was his fondest memories of the Casino days........ it touched me deeply, it could of been the biggest crock of shite ever but that was Dave ........... Dave in his pure Manc nasal tones in the record bar at Wigan............... having broken into a car looking to get his head down & to see if there was anything of value he could relieve the owner of............ " and guess what was in the glove box ,........... a fu*kin pair of gloves"............... simply the funniest person ive ever met. RIP Dave

Eyup Nicola, You must remind Arthur about; (1) Him and Dave Raistrick being interviewed on a local stateside radio station; (2) Forgetting his driving licence; (3) Sam and the rubber gloves! Nothing to do with what they found on the respective trips just very amusing accounts and to put any more detail here would take the edge off the tales (if Sam allows the last one to be printed that is:-) Love to Gilly and his motor, Pete xx

News: Australian National Soul Weekender Nov 12 - 14

Off to Sydney in the morning. Fly out of Perth at 7am. 40 odd soulies travelling from the West Sue and I are really looking forward to a fantastic weekender. 60 last week, knackered knees, but still love a dance. Figured out that attending all the venues, plus Saturday afternoon will result in 34 hours soul and 40/50 pints soul related drinking (as long as I don't get into a Guinness session with Nigel, Ian, John and Eric, then God help me!) About 20 hours sleep from Thursday to Monday, 4100 air miles travelled, 1/2 hour sightseeing, some shopping, 4 or 5 hours eating. Back home midnight Monday, in work Tuesday for a rest! Brilliant!!
