  1. What a pity this clashes with the Brid weekender! Hundreds who would otherwise have gone will miss this gig Can you move it back a week Kev? ........
  2. I'm glad you didn't get the bus Tabs even after all the effort I went to sorting you out with a bus route. Since the crisis thread over a year ago now it is good to see more people making the trip down to the 100 club and enjoying their experience. The atmosphere really picked up after one and stayed busy untill the end of the night. I think at one point I had four people sat in the cloakroom eager to chat. Great to see Malcom and Lesley from the Barn and so many other lovely people. I enjoyed Adam's varied and interesting sets. Record of the night for me was Marvell Love Don't Break That Rule great 70's dancer with a tropical feel. Well done Adam. Good to hear Job Opening played by Pete. Quality rare northern all the way. It was also great to see the return of regular DJ's Butch and Joel. Top Marks to everyone
  3. there was a great buzz in there on Saturday....long live the 100 club!
  4. Tickets & room booked, can't wait, cheers Jim.
  5. ...really glad I spent 20 minutes answering Agentsmith's question about the contents of this CD in 'Box' this morning now...
  6. And as this thread slips down the page at some pace, stride for stride Candi and Gloria Scott are a vocal match. Listen too the once indemand and now overplayed Gloria Scott - Just As Long As Where Together ( Gene Page Produced ). IMHO there neck and neck.
  7. Actually "Say You! The Motown Anthology 1963-68" is out on Kent at the end of this month, not next month. Jointly compiled by yours truly and fount-of-all-Motown-knowledge Keith Hughes, it's a single CD - the group not having recorded enough material to fill a double. As with all of Kent's Motown projects it's officially sanctioned by Universal, owners of the Motown catalogue. It's not a Hip-O or Spectrum or any other Universal label project, though, so I don't know where Dave B got that intel from... The set contians the whole of the 'Greetings, We're The Monitors' album in stereo - released legally on CD for the fist time anywhere, and mastered from the same tape that was used to manufacture the old UK Tamla Motown album 42 years ago! - plus the B sides of 'Say You' and 'Since I Lost You Girl', which were not on that album and are only otherwise available on 'The Complete Motown Singles' anthologies. Great as alll this already is, what will really have Motown collectors salivating is the prospect of the 12 unissued tracks, which span the whole of the group's tenure with Motown. Two of these songs have been heard before by the group, but the versions of 'Cry' and 'Crying In The Night' on this CD are not the same as those that have been previously issued. The other 10 will be new to the general public, and there are many 100% certified gems among them - my own personal favourite is 'My Love Grows Stonger' which is part written by J.J. Barnes and Richard Morris and which puts me in mind of a slightly slower version of Melvin Davis' 'I Must Love You' ... Other previously unissued highlights include the group's takes on the Johnny Rivers song 'Poor Side Of Town' and 'Too Busy Thinking About My Baby', which uses the same backing track that Norman Whitfield later recycled for the Temptations' 'Smooth Sailing (From Now On)' . Although the release of this CD means that every unissued track bar one on the group has now been issued at some point, there are no 'barrel scrapers' here, believe me. (To find out what the one still unissued track is - and to probably be able to guess why we didn't include it - you'll have to buy the CD...) 'Say You!' is out on the Tuesday after the next bank holiday Monday. What with this and the Patrice Holloway/Candi Staton sets, it's a fantastic month for all fans of classic soul on Kent. There are more Motown anthologies in Kent's imminent future but if I told you what they were I'd have to kill you...
  8. Apart from the great songs and musicians, Candi's unique voice has a wonderful homely feel to it. It's very easy to get addicted to it.
  9. John you not alone, I'm so embittered and I am a huge fan of embitterment..................................it's hip.
  10. And it sure won't come as more seriously recommended than that from Mr Hampsey. Indeed not . Another CD we can all have a long and healthy affair with..... . Thanks.
  11. Like I said mate, we all have different ears and different opinions. You reckon "Upper Hand" is "anthemnic unforgettable Northern Soul" and I reckon it's an ok Northern track, not bad but not great. It certainly wouldn't bother me in the slightest if I never heard it again, something I can't say about a lot of her Fame material.
  12. This is probably the reason i stopped subscribing a few years ago Jock and had a bit of a fall out with David over this, not from just a northern point of view but at the start there were overlong and dull interviews with certain soul stars which admittedly he did agree with me on that point but after about a dozen issues or so I gave up with it, still it's always sad to hear of any good mag (which it was in many respects) and I know David put his all into it Lenny
  13. Wholeheartedly agree, "Upper Hand" pales into insignificance in comparison to the tracks you mention and others. I enjoyed Upper Hand when I was much, much younger sprog on the Northern scene but really it's a poppy Northern dance track whereas much of her Fame stuff is quality SOUL music. I'm sure she feels "Upper Hand" is an embarrasment which I cottoned onto when I saw her at Peterborough a couple of years ago, she sang Upper Hand for no longer than 6 seconds then she was back to the real stuff. But hey, we all have different ears and different opinions. I suppose no record is good or bad, only how different folks hear it.
  14. Rarest? Yes.... ...Finest? Never in one bo-dillion years. I'm afriaid that you are confusing rarity with quality, sir. 'Now you've Got The Upper Hand' is barely fit to be mentioned in the same breath as things like 'How Can I Put Out The Flame', 'For You', 'Too Hurt To Cry' and 'One More Hurt'. It might fill a dancefloor but - well, let's just say that it's not surprising that Candi used to deny that it was actually her singing... Ain't that the truth!
  15. ...It's a CD, Flynny, not an art gallery! Seriously, Dean, Alec and I scanned so many previously unseen pictures of Candi from the Fame photo archives that it was hard finding room for Dean's fine essay, never mind about Japanese picture sleeves. But as always with an Ace/Kent title, there are plenty of lovely labels to look at and - through the courtesies of our most excellent pal, Harry Van Vliet of 'Fingerpoppin' Soul' fame - a bunch of rare European pic sleeve 45s, too. Of course, I'm sure that Dean will agree with me when I say that all this pales when placed alongside the incredible music. within...
  16. Fabulous artist and a deffo "must" buy Ace/Kent boys do it again
  17. I think one or two are getting ahead of themselves, pretty sure the team will bring you the countrys best weekender again next year. Many thanks to john poole fish and mark fletcher for a great event over the years, and thanks for lettin me dj and showcase the soultown djs.

  19. Keep on keeping on George.
  20. Think i might have to walk to this one lol, 5 mins down the road. cheers Ralph
  21. Blimey - Smarty Pants - the arrangement is exquisite. Nice mix/re edit. Earl Young's drums are as current as anything today on this -1973/4? Terrific music. I think we were spoilt back then with great musical productions and instrumentalists. I think it's time to be creative again and start getting into my 'East coast' songs I am creating........
  22. So that's it then, the end of allnighters at the wilton, sad or is the 4.30 finish a one off ?
  23. good ..... it was freezing
  24. Guys...it is true....David Cole sent me the email..... I would not post this unless it was true... it will be in the latest issue...due out soon Regards Barry
  25. If that's the case there's only one answer they should get themselves to Specsavers
