Mr Manships Auction Results 29 - 02 - 2012
Pookie Hudson This Gets To Me Condition could hardly bee finer, the label could hardly been more captivating; after all this is the highly coveted JAMIE STOCK copy in perfect condition.. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 409.00 Powerhouse You Turn Me On C/w Come Into My World As the Northern Soul "modern" slides off to the left towards a much funkier rhythm, this obscurity sound absolutely PERFECT for dancefloor appreciation. But it's more that just a funky dance grooves, classy jazz influenced riffs, a vocal delivered from an angry standpoint, instrumental breaks that hark back to the Jazz-Funk fever that o0verhelmed the Northern Soul scene in the early 80s. This is quality stuff with precise harmonies laid onto an inspired dance track. So, we then flip it over, and it gets sexy, a strong-stroller with beautifully constructed vocal-group backing. Two sides that will delight the thinking-Soul-Man. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 133.00 Whispers You Got A Man On Your Hands C/w You Can't Fight What Right Although apparently, I'm informed Wolverampton DJ legend "Pep" played this killer back in the 70s covered up as "The Carstairs". Today it's quality sits well below the-NS-radar. A double dose of undiluted pure vocal-group Northern Soul from L.A. Which for whatever reason has never risen to the upper value reaches where it's music quality certainly indicates it should be. Click the soundfile and you'll be treated to two Gene Page arrangements that give one of Melrose's Avenues most talented gatherings, a perfect foundation to flaunt their harmonious skills on. Two not one, truly fabulous Northern Soul dancers on a 45 that's rarely turns up for sale, and even more rarely turns up in DJ sets. I'm as guilty as the next man - but I'll put this right - at Rugby all-niters the "Be Yourself" room. Get on this, we think how much longer can quality of this calibre...snooze. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 159.00 Ascots Another Day C/w Love Northern Soul vocal group paradise - does it get any better than this? Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 653.00

Shout - Formerley Soul Music # 34 13th. October 1968 34 13th. October 1968 1/6d Front cover glossy picture is Joe Simon Amazingly this iconic fanzine covers Soul harmony vocal group The Ballads who had not had a release in the UK and to this day still haven't. Blues editorial - Talking The Blues Continuing saga of the "Original drifters" Don & Juan, Jimmy Delphs, Teen Queens - discographies Plus new release record reviews: including The Bandwagon - Breaking Down The Walls Of Heartache - the review reads; "Yeah! Dig this you Four Tops fans. Very unoriginal but beautifully done and the backing is superb and it;s even becoming a hit on our un-hip shores which shows that dance hall dwellers must buy records..." TC Perhaps the reference to those "dancehall dwellers" was the embryonic fertilization of Northern Soul children... Skillfully edited by the talent Tony Cummings & team. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 3.00 Freddie Chavez They'll Never Know Why C/w Baby I'm Sorry After the auction-mayhem caused by the BLUE stock copy last month. WEthought this flawless White Demo variation may stir those who missed out.. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 737.00 Etta James Tell Mama - Uk Album Our second rare British LP offering this month commemorates the passing of a lady who affected everyone who ever heard the driving passion and pain emanated from Etta's every syllable. This offering is the 1968 UK Chess press that many off you may never have seen before - it is that elusive! But unlike her British Ember album, this Chess 4536 lp contains Etta giving up SOUL at it's very deepest "I'd Rather Go Blind" Soul/RB dance music at it's most-potent "Tell Mama" and also a killer LP only R&B dance track of the highest order "Watch Dog" + so much more. Both LPs offer the collector a slice of "Black Music" history that will never be repeated - there will never be another ETTA and certainly the chance to own such a album rarity with a cover that is "Soul-Art", is an opportunity unlikely to present itself again in the near future! Vinyl has a few very light surface marks but as you can hear it plays beautifully. Cover and labels are immaculate! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 118.00 Martha & The Vandellas You've Been In Love Too Long C/w Love (makes Me Do Foolish Things) Alluring and irresistible Red & White in just impeccable condition. This recording sees Martha and the gals at their least commercially, thoroughly Soul stuff in it's most-beautiful clothes. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 97.00

Essex Iv My Reaction To You C/w My Heart Can't Take It A string driven thing! No it's not same copy we auctioned last November, this copy has near MInt - vinyl, tiny X on flip side label being the only blemish on an otherwise perfect rare Soul-Trophy, a solid grade above the one so may of you scuffle over, the lat time. That is of little wonder, as this coveted 45 gives of flawless rare-soul dance music performance (both sides), pre-disco and not a New York Club cliche can be heard. Old-School Soul-Guys Richie Rome (so many killer tunes to his credit) Bob Yorey the guy who did all that wonderful work with The Glories on Date. But for me it's a precision string section guided by Jack Perricone that set this 45 up as a stand-alone 70s killer. On both sides banks of string cradle a fluid vocal group from one peak to another - BRILLIANT! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 260.00 Brothers Of Soul I'd Be Grateful Richard Knight, Robert Eaton & Fred Bridges. Recently two of this iconic trio came to England for the first time, played to a packed Coventry dance hall, where the Northern Soul fraternity could say thank you, for enriching their lives with Detroit Soul creations that consistently became a Northern Soul classics. This 45 is one of 100s these three Demi-Gods were involved in - and I hope this listing will goes a little way to expanding awareness of these guys genius for the "soul dance sound" This is the VINYL variation of their most popular most-wanted 45. But most all of their other work is every note, just as good. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 159.00 Tony Sams A Thousand Miles Apart Excruciatingly RARE Mid-60 New Orleans influenced California R&B Northern Soul with a enviable reputation, and our first copy in an age! Tony Sams backed by the LaLa Wilson Band emits all the ingredients the very finest rare R&B trophies do - vocally immense and full infectious dance-floor appeal and almost certainly exclusivity at the venue your playing , as very few DJ's can boast of owning this floor-destroyer. Guaranteed rarity, guaranteed a floor-shaking response! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 254.00 Jimmy Mccracklin The Walk C/w Don't Blame Me Some records ignite fond memories, for me personally his 45 sparks two. First was in 1969 going to Nottingham's top soul club. The Brit - that was a turning point in my life, as Tamla Motown was dumped for rare-soul I'd never heard before. That evening branded my memory with "Jackie Edwards - I Feel So Bad" Al Kent - The Way You've Been Acting Lately" "The Spinners - She's Gonna Love Me AT Sundown" and in total contrast to those upbeat dance tunes. Jimmy McCracklin's - The Walk -.broke the smokey atmosphere. It was however almost a decade later when I attended a night in Brighton when Ian Clark and friends showed how the "The Walk" was done. Those Southerners always had to go one better, the dancefloor swayed and walked! The smart DJ followed it by the Artistics masterpiece "I'm Gonna Miss You" which fitted perfectly into the "Walkling" pace and the night was alight! Two great moments remembered due to a classic, that just seems to have been totally forgotten by the DJs today. Remembering the USA original all seem to play with poor sound quality - this high-fidelity 1958 UK press in flawless condition would be perfect to rekindle it's charms to the NS public. RARE and so collectible. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 63.00

Rotations (put A Dime On) D-9 Utilizing the same backing track as Barbara Mason's - Bobby Is My Baby - Jimmy Bishop and the Dynodynamics Philadelphia production guys lay a magnificent vocal group Northern Soul dancer down. Magnificent lead-vocal project Kenny Gamble's lyrics, with a shrill girl-group assistance blending the whole session into pure Philly Northern. You will not need reminding that this example is the stupidly RARE STOCKcopy. Vinyl has a few insignificant light surface marks - but as you can hear it plays loud, clear and true - and just begs you to get up and DANCE! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 372.00 Mar - J's Got To Find A Way Out The iconic Bunny's big-ears poppin' out of the hat - would be a crate-diggers heart-stopper, because Lennie LaCour's label has served the rare-soul collecting scene with countless delights of rare innovative Soul! This furious girl-group Northern Soul dancer again underlines why the label and the man are so very highly regarded. A subtle drum n' bongo intro collides with pumpin' horns, then this gang of defiant girls, kick-ass seeking a way out of a bad relationship with a man who tells lies. Totally killer girl-group Northern Soul of the rawest kind... Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 277.00 Joan Dovalle Let Me Go C/w No Better For You Although the label makes no reference to "PIED PIPER", this is not only 100% Detroit "Pied Piper" it is also one of the finest examples of this iconic Motor City gathering's work. Arranged by Herbie Williams & Joe Hunter, both sides give up the purest possible example of street-level Detroit Northern Soul. This 45 has everything!! Topside is the original take of the Gordon Berry backing track featuring an enthusiastic Mike Terry poised to interrupt the blaring horns and Joan's ear-drum thumping vocal portraying Andre Williiams, Ray Monette & Michael Campbell's lyrics, that just 2 releases later Abstract Reality did different but compelling take on. If that were not enough, the Pied Piper gang in the same session had the audacity to record a flipside so filled with attitude it commands your instant respect; especially as Mr. Terry can again be heard effortlessly kissing-out those magnificent Bari-Tone sax prompts from that legendary brass wand of his.... Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 536.00 Kolettes Who's That Guy C/w Just How Much (can One Heart Take) One of the ridiculously RARE British DEMO's to find! Both sides give up snappy but raw to the bone Girl-Group Soul. Top side is a great Northern Soul dancer. Flip side is more a statement that validates the golden era of the girl-group sound, first issued in the USA on local label Barbara 13421 then it's the quality alert Chess, for a Checker 1094 release, which took it then to these shores and this PYE promo. There is no finer way to own this 45, than a superb condition - hardly ever witnessed 1964 British DEMO. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 64.00

Mr Manships Auction Results 15 -2 - 2012
0 Shout Shout - Formerly Soul Music Issue 36 The glossy front cover alone of Chris Bartley, is worth pressing the "bid button" for. The inside journalism is as enthusiastic as all the 60s Tony Cummings projects. Aided by Charlie Gillett & Clive Richardson they transformed the former "Soul Music" fanzine into another vehicle for the British Soul fan to discover "what's going on" This is issue 36 in the series and would have cost you less than 8p in today's money. for the following. A Chris Bartley bio coincides with a November 1968 17 day tour . Covering a live review of his performance 3.11.68 @ the DOG HOUSE in Lancaster Gate. Other features include the HAMMERSMITH HOTPOT 3 page editorial on the effect of BLUES on the British audiences. This fanzine today's seems rather amateurish, but it all highligts the depth of love for Black MUsic these guys had, the passion to get their view on the streets just drips from every page. Today 4 years down the road, copies of this fanzine is near impossible to find. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 15.00 Derek Martin C/w Howard Tate Bumper To Bumper C/w Look At Granny Run Run Unissued UK studio cut - on a genuine 1967 EMI acetate, sporting Derek Martin's Roulette 4670 that EMI were getting ready for a UK a Columbia label release which never happened. One for the British Soul collecting completest - backed with Howard Tate's raucous "Look At Granny Run Run" Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 257.00 Etta James The Soul Of Etta James - Uk Album The irreplaceable Etta... The cover portrays perhaps the most captivating image of the Queen of R&B and an eye-catching piece of art, and a fabulous tribute to her unrivaled career delivering the most-potent of R&B and Soul one lady could ever hope to muster. The cover alone, should be hung in every true-soul fan's home - the music contents of the album, as you'd expect, cover her spectacular range of vocal styles. A staggeringly RARE 1967 UK press in just flawless condition and only our 2nd copy in over 20 years. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 51.00

Mr Manships Auction Results 15 -2 - 2012
Miracles What's So Good About Good Bye C/w I've Been Good To You Another seriously elusive 1962 Motown British 45. But in this eye-poping condition we'd say in 2012 a near impossible acquisition. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 142.00 James Bell And The Highlighters Amazing Love C/w Poppin' Pop Corn Genuine original FIRST press. This James Bell and Paul Major Indianapolis collaboration crafted two very special recordings. Topside: The James Jameson style guitar work intro is swiftly swallowed up by the seemingly shoulder to shoulder session steam with subtle horns, oohing vocal-harmony, male-group-chorus, all fused into a fantastically well constructed mid-tempo Northern Soul delight, featuring a late exhibition standard saxophone break. Well with that level of talent in the room,. you just know the flip is gonna take a different route! and it does - a slab of Deep Funk from the top-drawer! Two killer sides - showcasing what is possible when some local boys get together and groove...whilst still trying to upstage each other with their instrumental and vocal prowess. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 178.00 Fabulous Apollos The One Alone C/w Determination In matters not which side you drop the stylus on - you will be treated to real-deal grassroots Detroit vocal-group Northern Soul, forgoing the more commercial influences the city's music scene was under during the mid-sixties. The result of Val Brown's conviction to individuality, was two totally irresistible sessions. Currently receiving second-wind on the NS turntables to very appreciative dancefloors. In the unlikelihood of the dancers ever tiring of "The One Alone" ...just flip it over.. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 259.00 J. D. And Eddie She's Giving Me Love C/w Now She Wants To Leave There's been some Northern Soul underground buzz about this sultry California, horn-propelled Soul duet for quite some time, rarity and rarity alone has prevented a wider awareness, As in the style of Casanova Two, Pic & Bill etc. this dancer instantly captures your attention, as Eddie Wilson & Big J. D. Wright spew punchy lyrics into a mix of persuasive bluesy guitar riffs and forceful horn intrusions. The whole thing works up a storm, something Sam& Dave could not have delivered better and just incredibly hard to find! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 140.00

Mr Manships Auction Results 15 -2 - 2012
Jimmie And The Entertainers New Girl Regarded as this iconic Chicago label's rarest Northern Soul 45, certainly it is our first copy in memory and a gorgeous rubber-stamped PROMO as well. In the style of the very finest blue-eyed styled dancers this displays all the qualities that allows the style to reach into the upper-tiers of the NS rarest of the rare values. Along with group like James Holvay's THE MOB this style was at the time very popular as it crossed boundaries, as it also did in the Carolinas and eventually of course, they surface as British Northern Soul favourites. This example is one the highly elusive ones, rare in the extreme and carrying all the vibrant qualities and more than a pinch soul influence. Today this is one NS classic you just don't see for sale, act accordingly. . Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 488.00 Ruby Sherry Femine Ingenuity C/w Please Don't Go Lovely and rarely seen WHITE DEMO - this is the vinyl press with the two sides that give up, totally compelling Sister-Northern Soul from either side. Some light surface marks but plays beautifull - check out the double sound-file lifted directly off this disc. Spy the PROMO label it carries promo-man inflicted X's. So what's not to like? Exactly! - a couple of minor flaws that pale in comparison to the abundance of class that seeps from the grooves. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 327.00 Ronny Douglas Worth Waiting For A monster on the New York "Island" scene for decades is starting to cause a ripple or two amongst the better informed Northern Soul explorers. Since the Al McCarther style big-city-beater was so enthusiastically received by the NS fraternity; a few equally fine and just as rare mid-pace 60s masterpieces have stepped forward to fill the vacuum left by "His True Love For You" After listening to soundfile It will come as no surprise whatsoever that this killer was written and produced by the extremely skills Ritchie Adams the master of Big-City production. As for Ronny Douglas - what a cultured vocal - check out his other impossible 45 on Everest, which is every note as good. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 110.00 Mckinley Mitchell All Of A Sudden C/w I'm So Glad Not only one of this iconic Chicago label's rarest 45s but also atwo fine examples of Mckinley's deep down dirty singing style at it's most emotional. On the 1st side he is aided by a studio full of enthusiastic ladies,giving-up a shrill non-stop chorus to smooth out his pain. Superb... On the dae I say superior 2nd side he deserts the girls, creating an even more despairing session, as his vocals reach out to claw at his pain, resulting in even greater despondency. As the early 60s Chicago rainy sidewalks literally seep from the speakers evoking visions of a man walking away from the doors of 1827 South Michigan, Chicago knowing today he reached as far into his soul as was humanly possible. Proper real deal SOUL on a real-deal label of huge repute. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 70.00

Mr Manships Auction Results 15 -2 - 2012
Judy Hughes Fine, Fine, Fine C/w Crazy For You Chester Pipkin is a name that appears on a multitude of 60s California creations - and once you see the moniker of this former "Squires" guitarist you know something special is sitting in those grooves. A monster Wigan Casino, Richard Searling cover-up that was a stand-out sound of the era, it was after-all so different to the Motownesque girly tunes the punters had been spoon fed with for over a decade. This "baby" has attitude, a fuzz-guitar rattling away in the background and then the "Magician" Al Capps adds a potent horn break, immediately followed by Bongos driving the production even higher. So very different for the time, and with RS behind it - it became an iconic "Casino" spin that has remained near impossible to acquire. AWESOME! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 945.00 Servicemen I Need A Helping Hand C/w My Turn AT LAST we've got a copy with the labels the CORRECT way round - and we could not hope for this Northern Soul classic to be in finer condition. For the NS anorak this really is something, quite pleasing. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 257.00 Yvonne Baker You Didn't Say A Word Today, what are the chances of owning one of the best-loved, most-heard and most highly regarded of Sister-Northern-Soul-Classics in near perfect condition? Those eye-popping West Coast promo labels are PERFECT. The playing surface looks and plays MINT - oh how you gonna find one in this condition, after most-every other copy I've never encountered in recent time has endured 40 years plus of Northern Soul turntable affection! Most all have been loved to death! But not this copy this copy has been loved so much - I doubt the previous owner let it out of his sight. Act accordingly the chances of acquiring this NS classic in this sublime condition are diminishing by the day. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 451.00 Bobby Parker Watch Your Step Condition, Condition, Condition In this state, in the year 2012 - this the 1961 British press is a most difficult piece indeed. Currently the USA V-Tone release is gaining club-spins and rapidly gaining in value. A powerful rockin' pumpin' brass laden, guitar-lead early soul Philadelphia dancer, who's recent comeback onto the Rare-Soul turntables is long, long overdue. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 67.00
