Al Johnson-need Some Information
I´ve got the Symba LP, so if you want any more info on that I´ll gladly help. May have an mp3 of a track that I ripped of that album, can post that as a refo-soul clip. The group Symba was from Washington DC and consisted of eight members featuring lead vocalists Gerald Hollan and Cheryl Hawkin. In 1980 they released the album Body Bait and a couple of 45s on Venture Records. Al Johnson was the arranger. BTW, the record cover features a black woman + a white woman + a lion! Best, Melismo

Owners Name In Run Out
At a record fair I once found a fairly rare 45 on which the former owner had not only written his name in the run out of the record, but also carved into the actual record (the B-side only) with a sharp object (right across the grooves...bu-huh)... "This side sucks!". Well it definitely prevents you from playing that side since it´s seriously scratched/carved in like that...hmmm...

Best Soul Artists
All down to personal opinion of course, we can never "agree". I must confess that I am a Donny Hathaway fanatic. He is my #1 soul brother actually, and my main reason for saying that is because of his VOICE!!! It´s heavenly. Me a fanatic? Yes, one of his albums I have on original vinyl + original cassette + reissue CD + the original poster for the album + all the 45s from that particular album, since I once tried to be a Donny Hathaway completist, but I´ve given up. For instance I do not own the June Conquest 45s, and there are plenty of production work he did that is very obscure which I´ve never considered buying. So just in case you´ve missed it (LOL) - the best soul artist is (IMVHO of course) DONNY HATHAWAY!!! ... and the legacy goes on, his daughers Lalah and Kenya Hathaway sounding just like him... Cheers, Melismo

The Original Mastercuts Show - Playlists And Links
Hi there! It´s a pity Alan will be leaving the show, but I wish him (you, if you´re reading this Alan) the best of luck with the new show and the new concept. Ian, you and Alan were such a perfect match, you seem to get along so well, but without a doubt I will continue to tune in each and every week to hear you spin those quality Original Mastercuts grooves! You seem to have a thing for Fonzi Thornton and Grady Harrell, not the first time those gentlemen are featured on the show. No problems though, love those tracks! Nice to hear Alex O´Neal again. He was discussed in a recent thread somewhere as regards his "wife swapping"...LOL?! Bessie Banks - Don't You Worry Baby (The Best Is Yet To Come) Now that´s a classic! Cheers, Melismo

Sitting In The Park 8-3-2008
Sorry Bob, it´s a Various Artists-comp, not only Lenny Williams stuff on there, don´t remember the title of the CD(s), since I don´t own a copy, but possibly put out by one of those UK `reissue/rare vinyl comp´ labels?! Very little help I know... BTW, do you know if there was a Tony Sherman in The Sherman Brothers, is it a French record? Best, Mel

Shaun! Thanks for your posts. I publish a new podcast at least once a month, so a new one will soon be up! Nick! Thanks for your help in offering to sell those records. Ian! Thanks for your positive comments. You wrote: "great selections....I'd love to go through your collection". Me too...LOL...that´s what I´m doing right now, and some of my "finds" will be included in my upcoming podcasts. I´m now paying special attention to the D-section no less! Just found one piece of music that seems to be so obscure that when I search the Internet (with correct spelling and everything) I don´t get a single hit/match! Don´t think that has ever happened to me before... Cheers, Mel

Chet Davenport: "what Would I Do"/"war In The Ghetto"
Cheers Brett. So does that mean that the Chet Davenport is an 80´s item? Sounds very much like a 70´s recording to me, actually I thought it was from the first half of the 70´s, but seems like I was wrong, living is learning... Cheers, Mel

Soulpower Podcast Playlist 23rd July 08. (free To Download)
Hi Shaun! Don´t know if you noticed my comments for your previous show. Enjoyed this one too. You played: Akwaaba People - What Am I Gonna Do Nice to hear this tune again. I remember Nick van Gelder being involved, later a part of Jamiroquai and now as a solo artist with brand new material out. Also interesting to hear: Roy Ayers/Wayne Henderson - For Real I do prefer the Flowers recording though - hard to top that one Dionne Warwick - Friends Can Be Lovers True, it has that Lisa Stansfield sound. This is much better than I remember it. Will have to dig it out again. Larry Graham - Sooner Or Later One of those "cheapies", that is a massive modern soul tune. Wonderful track. Cheers, Melismo

Foreign Dj's Current Top 5 In The Hotbox
Melismo out of Sweden here. No club gigs or radio shows these days (that´s what I used to do in the 80´s and 90´s), but I have recently started doing podcasts, and my playlists + downloads can be found here: https://listen.to.soulmusic https://melismo.podomatic.com Right now I´m rediscovering the F-section of my record collection, so currently enjoying tunes such as: Fingers - Searching For A Love (RCA, 1979) Fat Albert - Friends (Paramount, 1973) Sandra Feva - Love Me For What I Am (Venture, 1979) Family Brown - Can´t Used To Being Alone (UA, 1977) Freddi-Henchi and the Soulsetters - I Like Funky Music (CBS, 1972) Funk not soul, but still... All these happen to be album tracks, and admittedly not all for the dancefloor, a couple of them being for home-listening purpose only, but nice tunes anyways. Cheers, Melismo
