  1. hi. don't suppose you still have this one, do you? 151 Jackie Hunt Since You Been Gone / Security Of Love Jetsream let me know! thanks
  2. in july of '97 i devoted a radio show to the sounds of detroit from late july '67...marking the 30-year anniversary of the riots...played what you might have heard on, say, wjlb the day the rioting began...did lots of playlist research beforehand but also relied on anecdotal evidence on a couple ("man, they stopped playing my record on the radio when the riots hit," someone had quoted cecil washington as saying, because of what might be interpreted as some kind of black-power sentiment in the lyrics)... DOWNTOWN SOULVILLE with Mr. Fine Wine Fridays 6PM-7PM, WFMU - FM 91.1 East Orange, NJ July 25, 1997 Detroit Riot soundtrack! Gladys Knight & the Pips, "Everybody Needs Love" Marvin Gaye, "Your Unchanging Love" Andre Williams, "Pearl Time" Jimmy Delphs, "Almost" Jean & the Darlings, "How Can You Mistreat the One You Love" The "Group" Featuring Cecil Washington, "I Don't Like to Lose" The Miracles, "More Love" Bunny Sigler, "Let the Good Times Roll/Feels So Good" Lewis Clark, "Dog (Ain't a Man's Best Friend)" The Parliaments, "(I Wanna) Testify" Kris Peterson, "Mama's Little Baby (Is a Big Girl Now)" The Esquires, "Get On Up" Bonnie Brisker, "Someone Really Loves You (Guess Who)" The Isley Brothers, "That's the Way Love Is" Jr. Walker & the All Stars, "Shoot Your Shot" Jimmy Ruffin, "Don't You Miss Me a Little Bit Baby" Slim Harpo, "Tip On In (Pt. 1)" Jimmy Mack, "My World Is on Fire" Willie Horton & the Supremes, "Detroit Is Happening" i'm doubting "shoot your shot" had much longevity on the local playlists after that week! same with "detroit is happening," which was a public service message for summer youth programs but had lines like "detroit is HAPPENING this summer!!"...then there's "my world is on fire"...

two great sides, very poor recording. if they'd done a better job with it, this would be one of the all-time great two-siders, with a killer deep side and a killer dance side. alas...
  4. i'm not set up for clips. someone else, maybe?
  5. "try my love" is the side, man!
  6. thanks, grumpyfella. had a feeling that one was pretty rare.
  7. one instance that springs to mind: the "other" james shaw gets credit for some james t. "mighty hannibal" shaw tracks....but i've stumbled on many others over the years.
  8. i'm with you, lars! the drum fills and the rhythm guitar just add clutter to a pristine, stripped-down arrangement! the cymbal's okay, but it's better without!!
  9. Paul Walters, I Know What Love Is All About (521) Billy Hambric, Flaming Mamie (Fury) anyone?
  10. thanks. why, did quantity turn up? or did the limited number of sweet soul collectors all find a copy?
  11. stock copy w/both sides...trying to put a price on it. thanks.
  12. GoodTaste: besides you, me, dante, and shadow, i don't know.
  13. hey, GoodTaste...not too many copies of that record in your avatar floating around, are there....
  14. don't think i'd ever heard that later version. besides the cymbal, it has extra drum fills all over the place and that simple rhythm guitar stroke....i'm not convinced it's better! people dance their asses off to the other version at my night and start whooping and hollering as soon as it starts, but this is the u.s.....
  15. what a great record. i even like the other side. bmi is NOT a good source for this kind of information. they are every bit as likely to be wrong as right with shared names. anyone thinking this kind of listing on bmi is "authoritative" is misguided.
  16. can't help you with the record, i'm afraid, liam...but he'll be performing this one live (along with "you were meant for me" and more) this friday in brooklyn. see info in calendar section. m
  17. hate to say it, but i think i want it more.
  18. okay, just listened again. REALLY prefer syl's (or whoever's) voice to ol' nate's. if i had this version, i don't think i'd be selling it. to each his own, i guess.
  19. also have a m- johnny howard "the chase is on" on bashie promo up for grabs...

WILLIE HOOKS, "Take It Easy on Me Baby"/"A Little More Time" (Soul World). M-. 4. IKE LOVELY, "I Want It All"/"You're My Bad Habit" (Capitol promo). M-. 5. NATE EVANS, "Main Squeeze"/"Pardon My Innocent Heart" (Twinight promo). Stunning midtempo Chicago 70s with a brilliant deepie on the flip. Strong VG (on a M-/VG+/VG scale; music is loud and clear with some surface crackle and scattered clicks, nothing horrendous, plenty of life left and fine for DJ'ing). PLEASE EMAIL ME ONLY!!! FINEWINE@WFMU.ORG. NO PM'S!!! thanks, matt
  22. he doesn't want hip snap; he doesn't want hippest snappest. what he wants is hipper snapper!
  23. definitely a different singer. i prefer this hitherto-unknown version! could well be syl. great find, bob. strange to find this thread, because i JUST pulled out my nate evans with the intent to sell it (see sales board). m
  24. saxie now gone...oh, when i say "strong vg" on the spitting image, that's on a scale that does NOT include ex.
  25. those are the best. i also LOVE the flip of you were meant for me, mary lou, a remake of one he'd done for modern or flair (can't remember) a few years earlier. now a standard covered by the likes of bob seger. the other mercury sides have a great sound but are a little more noveltyish: my country cousin, teacher gimme back.... there's some earlier stuff that's quite good, some in almost a rock-and-roll vein: hot dog, hit git & split, rabbit on a log, i smell a rat. favorites from that era are well baby and do you love me. m
