United Sound Of Soul Update
Wherever it is it'll be quality While I've never been to this venue the feedback on the last one was fantastic so really looking forward to a trip down. Hopefully you 'll be able to stay put this time and ram the place every couple of months, as befits one of the very best nights around. Line-up for the next one looks great too; see you there! TnJ - who's driving? I don't mind, honest; my neck's still a bit stiff from last time and we may have to resort to the sunroof if it's yours x

Tiaras
I went into a shop the other day and asked for a brown pair of Tricker's shoes. The gentleman behind the counter said he didn't have any for sale, although he did own a pair himself. In fact, it transpired that he has owned several black pairs previously and also has a brand new pair of brown ones in the bottom of his wardrobe but they're not currently for sale. Very kindly, he actually emailed his wife at one stage and she was good enough to scan them and forward the picture to me; they were really lovely and just what I am looking for. Unfortunately, however, he said they weren't for sale - how frustrating. He then provided me with a really informative potted history of this famous marque and we happily discussed the relative merits of leather vs man-made soles, breathability (naturally), heel wear and cobbling per se. Finally, after some 17 hours - by which time the shop had closed because dusk had enveloped it, although he was still remarkably encouraging and happy to give of his time and knowledge, which I fully appreciated - I left the shop. Sadly, I remained empty handed (apart from the lovely scan of the gentleman's [not for sale] shoes of course) but a whole lot better informed. Overall, am I glad I asked him? COME ON YOU TEASING BSTARDS, HAS ANY FOOKER GOT A COPY OF THE TIARAS FOR SALE?

Ever Asked A Dj For A Request
Have certainly asked folk for stuff over the years, particularly in the days when you had to travel to hear the fella with the exclusives you loved (and they've usually obliged to be fair). As a youth, have also made a knob of myself on numerous occasions asking for what I thought a record was called and, horrifically, might even have tried to sing the odd line on a couple of occasions I will always remember one of the very few occasions that I've been on the receiving end of a request and, as they go, it was a beauty. It was somewhere in deepest, darkest Yorkshire as I recall when, three records in - think they were Royal Robins, Chansonettes and summat else - a clearly disgruntled lady came and requested, ever so politely mind, that I should "play some fookin northern." I'll get me coat ...
-
Beat Ballads
Absolutely love em, always have; however, there does seem to be a stigma attached in some quarters i.e. amongst those who associate tempo singularly with quality and of course the debates continue to, erm, 'rage' about what 'northern' is, what should be played, what's for chin strokers only etc etc etc ... Personal faves include: Ty Karim - all at once (Romark) Everything else is second division after this IMHO but its a competetive league nonetheless ... Don & Juan - the heartbreaking truth (Mala) Linda & Vistas - he went away (Shrine) Betty Turner - tell yourself a lie (Crescent) Cheers Phil

Guy Hennigan Spin - What Was That Record
He's back with me pal, couldn't live without him. How can you not own a record which contains the words egg foo yung - I finally saw sense Seriously, I can think of a few things I've had to let go because of cashflow problems and that I've regretted, Billy was one of em (alongside Limelights, Matt Lucas, Idols, Billy Miranda etc) - as long as you know where they've gone though there's always the possibility when things improve ... ... take it easy bud Phil

Guy Hennigan Spin - What Was That Record
Funnily enough they'll both be coming out of my little box to play at USOS on 19th - and I guarantee every fecker'll sit down when they do
