Sam acquired the 45 from Richard (neither of them played it from an album). To be honest I've never seen the album. Maybe someone has a scan. Steve

Hi Simon Can you date it in any way? Sam did Winter Gardens as a regular before he became a regular at Wigan. He only joined the Casino crew towards the latter days as you know, when he was on his Modern front. Richard had joined it at this point but was still championing his 60's sounds although it was the time where such as ZZ & Co and Ike Strong were entering the scene. It was also the time where, for those not within the scene at the time, Richard was at the verge of leaving the Casino because of the music policy and his beliefs, and Sam was buying everything post Northern a la sixties sound. Sam started playing things such as Mel Carter "No Work, No Play" and Coffee "Casanova" whereas Richard was still much behind Mr Soul, Martells etc etc but was movin into the Modern sound. Oh how I wish we had dated / catalogued everything back then, rather tha just recording them just to play in the car when we were going to the next venue. That damn Rix was the the only one who had a glimpse of the future.... Sorry Andy, your'e a star. Best Steve

Truthful Feedback
Quite agree. I may be speaking out of turn by mentioning this but I'm going to anyway. I stopped going to Lowton when it first started because the equipment couldn't cope with the room, or rather the DJ's(?) were insistent on turning the volume up to max for impact and the sound was so distorted it became un-listenable.. to me anyway. There we go, I've said my bit. Promoters please listen. There is no need with todays technology for poor, under performing sound. On that note I'm out of here.

Truthful Feedback
The problem with negative feedback is that you upset people... naturally. When I was doing reviews for Manifesto, I was quite honest in my opinions on venues. I looked at not just the number of people through the door, but also the floor reaction, the equipment and the DJ's and their sets. On more than one occasion I slated the equipment which was a real bug bear of mine having run mobile disco's in the past where I felt it necessary to have equipment that would cope with all venues (height, width and floor space can be very much a part of how a set up will sound). By doing this I caused conflict, never to be asked to DJ in the area again. It should have been a pointer to the promoter that something needed addressing.... but it never was. It was always taken personally. The problem, as you say, is that in a forum, the promoter can "big up" the venue and say it was a banging night when in reality, 20 people were in attendance, all mates, all dancing (maybe) but without atmosphere and all saying what a great night. Strike up the barbeque, ask the same 20 people round, play the same tunes from YouTube and the same thing would be said... "What a banging night". All that and a free sausage thrown in too!

Price / Rarity Re The Cleggy Stompers Thread In Look At Your Box
So the story goes after a chat with Soul Sam a couple of minutes ago: Sam got what we know as "Night Time Shadows" from Richard in trades. Sam seems to think it was he who covered it up knowing that Richard S hadn't done much with the track (although Simon T's tape would suggest it was Richard that covered it up) and it was the kind of thing that Sam was using and collecting at the time. The first time he played it he had a lot of enquiries (although until a few minutes ago he couldn't remember the artists / title / label, only remebering the c/up details) and subsequently says he let it go for approaching the £400 price mark. Bearing in mind this was the latter end of the 70's that was a lot of money. He doesn't remember who it went to. As Andy said in a previous post, I bought my copy from John Anderson at Soul Bowl as a "blind buy" because of the title and it would stack up that John didn't know what it was as it was still a one off and covered up. So mine has sat in the box and never been played out... I guess you could call it Mint minus having been played on Andy's deck at home once to record it (as he did at the time) and mine likewise. That strange world of Northern Soul turns full circle yet again. Steve H

That was exactly it Andy. I presume even John didn't know what it was then? How strange (BTW... not forgotten about the sleeves, was hoping to drop them off) Best Steve

Cheers Simon, So the cassette wasn't one that myself or Andy had done was it (although to be honest I don't remember putting the track on any of my tapes)? I refreshed Richards memory in a conversation the other day and he recalls having the 45 (sent him the scan) although he said he traded it with Sam late 70's. He too wasn't aware of another copy until I mentioned the one I have. I wonder what happened to the other as I don't think Sam has any recollection of it although I may ring him today to ask him. Best Steve H

...and for the record (excuse the pun) it is on a 45 and it would appear to be quite a hard one to find

I've had a few replies, mostly PM's saying this is an album only track.... on that basis, how rare is this

Wanted
Definitely put out on a white label 45. The original recording was at a different speed as I recall and the played out version is a bit faster. I have one and am willing to let it go ..... no idea on price though Steve

Price / Rarity Re The Cleggy Stompers Thread In Look At Your Box
I put a post up in the Look At Your Box "Cleggy Stompers" thread mentioning the Gang Band "The Sound Of Boston" ex-Mike Theodore Life Orchestra "Nighttime Shadows" cover up. There's one reply at the moment suggesting it's an album track yet I have a 45. Is it scarce/rare even though it may not fit in with todays trend. Your input welcomed Thanks in advance Steve

Cleggy/clifton/mecca 70S Stompers
I've heard it is quite rare but I have it on a 45. However it would be so "out of vogue" I haven't a clue on the value...anyone? Steve
-
Cleggy/clifton/mecca 70S Stompers
Absolutely Godz, but it's actually by The Gang Band not as per clip. Anybody know how rare this is just as a matter of interest? Steve
-
Cleggy/clifton/mecca 70S Stompers
Anybody remember Mike Theodore Life Orchestra "Nightime Shadows". I may be wrong but I don't think it was ever officially uncovered because the record faded into the distance never to be played again. Steve

The Montclairs - Hey You ! - Who Discovered / Played It First ?
I seem to remember buying it off JA at the Bowl for £6 somewhere around '77. God knows where it went though. I must have had a clear out at some point and sold it way before it became a big money tune. Steve
