  1. You are prob not familiar with the Bobby Fuller Four version mate, check it out on youtube. This was the first release of the actual song and although its not as good as Melba's it did get spins back in the 70s at cleethorpes pier i believe
  2. I would agree with Bridgey mate. You are correct in saying the first was the rare local release on IMPEL.However the one most people play is the yellow Seventy Seven which is the original national release, and is the one you have.Later reissued on multi couloured seventy seven
  3. Paul This happens to be one of those records that although not extreamely rare people who have got one want to hold on to it. Get ready because as you collect more and more this scenario will keep repeating itself as certain fave records stay in peoples collections for years. Keep patient and you will get a good 80% of your wants but its part of the game to always need that elusive want.As for the Playboys this record has been in and out of favour for years and althought it sounds awesome i agree i have seen it clear the floor due to it being too uptempo to dance to.But it is real deal Northern Soul and good luck with your search.

  13. I Bought this at Keele when it was first put out on the green Soulseries label when it got a lot of plays. Its a storming version.Recorded i believe at the same time as slow fizz just different vocals which i think work better with the backing track.Think its on the tube worth checking it out
  14. I've got the Willie Small also which was a Stafford spin. Also Got the fantastic uptempo Curtis Smith / Willie Small- The-Living End on related label ESSICA which has How High Can You Fly on the flip

  16. Thanks Ian as you say basic production but thats what i like about it,and your right about the song it does get lodged in your brain.Just not quite good enough to make it maybe but its good Northern Soul non the less.
  17. LITTLE EDITH---I COULDN'T TAKE IT---JESSICA Had this record for a few years now and always liked it, but can't ever recall hearing it played out.Was told it was played at the Casino at one point.Any info on this one,who played it,who is she,and was it ever a big tune.
  18. Take a look at the recent underplayed and under £50 thread. This turned up a tonne of brill under played and unknown by many records.Still hundreds of records that deserve their day in the sun some great dancers out there no real need for new discoveries just start experimenting with whats already available.
  19. Nice one they probably thought you were the Northern regiment under the leadership of Lord Winstanley
  20. Its Strange how things stick in your mind.Lots of Nighters are hazey memories as time goes by but you can remember unusual events that stick in your mind. One such memory i have was at the Bretby nighter.I went to a few nighters during the mid 90s at Bretby but the one i remember most was in 96 at Chris Kings 40th Birthday nighter. On this particular night a large tent was attached to the main room which was full of record dealers. My fave record at the time was the belting track by Jean Wells--With My Love And What You Got--Calla,and i had been looking out for a copy.Eventually after looking through Pat Brady's sales table i was over the moon to find one and snapped it up.Pat's pitch was right next to to doors that lead you back to the main room so clutching on to my my Jean Wells i walked back through. As soon as i set foot onto the Floor i swear the D.J started to play the record i had just bought a few seconds earlier.Gobsmaked i just started to dance while still holding onto the Calla gem in my hand. That same night a few live artists were performing.I think the first was Ivy Joe Hunter. Then came Edwin Starr.Just before Edwin came on i decided to make a quick visit to my car to put some records away safe.As i walked through to the exit i literally bumped into Edwin waiting to go on stage. He smiled and offered a handshake.I held on to his hand and left him totally bemused by blurting out the fact that we shared the same birthday."Thats great "he said ,then i made it worse by saying "i'm just going outside for a bit i've seen you loads of times anyway.
  21. Thanks for That Soulman and Peter99 i don't know what came over me first time i have mentioned that cleggy night to anyone feeling a tad reflective tonight for some reason
  22. Love these kind of threads a bit of sentiment does you good now and then.Remember back in 1997 Easter Bank Holiday At the sorely missed Cleethorpes Winter Gardens. My wife Bev had only a week left till the Birth Of our only Daughter Jess.I didn't want to go to the night but Bev insisted i didn't miss one of my fave venues. So off i went and travelling down the M180 to Cleggy the incredible sight of the Halle Bop comet was in full view all the way.Full of stress and Worry about Bev i couldn't really get into the night until late on Roger Banks introduced a record i had never heard before. The tune was No One Could Love You More by Gladys Knight & The Pips.As the record started building i jumped onto the floor and started to dance. the track captured perfectly the feelings i had at the time and all i could think about was Bev back home.At the end of the record i said my farewells to mates and hit the road back home. The Comet was even brighter and lit the sky as i put my foot down Gladys playing over and over in my Head.Got home Bev looked and smiled "your back early"she said rubbing her Bump."Crap night " i replied just as an excuse.Three Days later Jess Arrived and changed our lives. One Month Later i had secured an original UK motown copy of No One Could Love You More, and whenever i hear that record it takes me back to that Halle Bop Night.Oh and just in case your thinking this over sentimental stuff ment he never went out again Two momths later Bev was giving me Daggers as i set off for the Keele all-nighter leaving her up to the neck in nappies.Dam ive spoilt the tale now. Just to Wind up Another great Soul night experience came 15 years later this year at the Bridlington Weekender when Me and Bev were accompanied for the first time by my Daughter Jess, and to say i was proud when she danced at the side of me is the biggest understatement ever.
  23. I made the point that the Word Stomping was also used to describe a style of Dancing to pounding uptempo Soul,i'm not trying to redefine anything to suit my preferences just stating how things were for me.I'm sure most people my age will be familiar with seeing this style of Dancing performed to records like The Champion,So Is The Sun,Psychadelic Soul, etc.Later on the style was modified with a bit more footwork and used to dance to the 70s uptempo numbers already highlighted in the thread. These uptempo 70s records in my opinion have just as much relevence on the Northern Soul Scene as say The Jewels. Why pigeon hole the word stomper surely there can be 60s stompers and 70s stompers Not got a clue what your Fat old bald men comment is about but i know many who would still love to be able to Stomp like they used to to at Clfton Hall to Janice. All i wanted to do mate was talk about RECORDS and the fact that at a lot of soul nights nowadays the 70s danceable stuff is overlooked and its a shame.I would love to hear the odd few thrown in to playlists just to remind us of how good some of em still sound out loud
  24. Thanks for that so the shop is still there managed by his son.I've had the turntable for a few years now and often wondered about the label on its front, sorry for my ignorance about the Manchester scene I'm a Donny lad.
