  1. Simple question deserves a simple answer..........because I enjoy it, but as you know I don't limit DJing to strictly Northern rooms. Lifeline is similarly the only place that I've caught you out and about.......you might want to try The Attic, United Sound of Soul, Boomerang, Soul Essence, Groovesville, Dab Of Soul, Hip City, Souln' Around, Select Soul.......but maybe you're right.....I should get out more.... ...well, one of us should anyhow...
  2. "But there was still a definiton of sound, a style factor which dictated the musical boundaries of the scene and to many people, that style aspect concludes around 76-77 with great records like FLAMING KING etc. That style aspect seems, over the years to have frustated many people and we had first 'The Modern Soul Scene' (Of which I loved a large number of records) and now a further kailedescope of tastes and styles, which for some reason, certain people seem intent on foisting onto the classic Northern Soul fan, with or without his or her's approval!" That is complete and utter bollocks!!! Are you really denying the relevance of every 70's and 80's soul play within Northern clubs main rooms since '77 ? You really have got a distorted view of what the Northern scene has been about......this might fit your comfort zone, but it's so far away from the truth it's laughable. I'd completely understand your lack of attendance at Northern venues since '77, since you had so many other music styles......punk, jazz-funk...to fit in before you rejoined our happy band...so that might explain your seeming lack of experience of the music played. I'd really like you to explain to me how tracks like the Anderson Brothers, Frankie Crocker, Nate Evans, Eloise Laws............are acceptable "Northern" tracks , just because they happened to be played at THE time, when similar styled tracks that came along later (post Wigan) are shuffled off to an alternative room, like some embarrassing relative turning up unexpectedly. I don't recall any surveys being conducted before the Jobell Orchestra (for instance) was "foistered" on an unsuspecting "classic Northern soul fan" of the day. So please don't try to pretend that the "Northern" scene of the day was anything other than a great mix of different and complimentary soul styles. The "classic Northern soul fan" as you put it has more recently redefined Northern as uptempo 60's, white washing the past and small incedentals like Dave Godin raving over great Northern tracks like Wash And Wear Love, hardly a typical "Northern" sound, but a Northern classic, nevertheless.......I'm sure he'd have something to say about the diversity of styles if he was still around. By the way it's Flame 'N' King....

  5. PM me with price and condition......thanks
  6. Maybe I've missed the point of the thread, but wouldn't "going full circle" involve the return to smaller club nights dedicated to playing obscure and little known soul music tracks across a number of styles to an enthusiastic audience, looking for something other than the over-ground mainstream ? So when I referred to an enthusiastic European crowd and club scene it was this definition I had in mind, not one that was trying to replicate the music and fashion style of the Casino; stuck in the past with nowhere to go but down. When I said "everything soulful", I meant Northern, modern, contemporary, funk, jazz and plenty in between. The scene I became part of was an across the board soul scene.... , and it is only recently that it has morphed into one that has managed to convince itself that 4 to the floor 60's is the only way...and always has been.... For the record, I entirely agree with Chris Hill's comments of the day, though you've failed to appreciate that the jazz-funk scene often dipped into older, obscure releases that complimented the new releases.
  7. Still working through the current batch of CDs....(and still waiting on some.... )....album only would get my vote...
  8. It was brilliant Jordi...a top weekend.... ...gonna try to get back out there for December's Movin' On too
  9. I'm just back from DJing at Movin' On in Barcelona to a club full of people in their teens and twenties, playing records that were upto 40 years old, to real appreciation of everything soulful. So your over simplified and too convenient view of audience age versus music age doesn't work for me. The enthusiasm of European audiences to dance to tunes that many of them had never head before is testament to the timelessness and quality of the music, and a statement on the apathy that the vast majority on UK scene have for something different and fresh.

Both sides of the Hi issue Jock...... ....it's the only way to have a promo and be greedy with the sides...
  11. Do you wanna sell the other side Steve....
  12. Superb '70's soulful dancer......different flip to the later White issue though.....you should buy this..
  13. Fair enough....ok...my last words on the subject 'cos I'm now bored of this... ...... ..............I think it's safe to say that we won't be exchanging CDs anytime soon....
  14. That's the difference I guess, I prefer quality soul that sits on a great production and a dance beat, whereas you appear to want a beat first, without an arrangement, and with soul content being relegated to an incedental part. I bought both 45s 20 odd years ago, "I'm Yours" because it's a stand out tune, and "Don't Give Up", bought blind because I'd expected a similar quality. DGU didn't even get time for a card sleeve before I sold it on......."pulse racing" ....you're very easily excited, even for a tone deaf monkey... ..
  15. Check you headphones....I think you're getting some distortion.....DGU is an awful tuneless mess, whist IY is a an immense slab of high quality soul....some people can tell the difference you know..... ...hard to believe they came out of the same studio
  16. What's it like Johnny..... ....worth playing out....?
  17. Can't believe you're seriously suggesting Don't Give Up as a substitute for I'm Yours...... .....nowhere near the same league IMO....
  18. You're right.....Diplomats became the Skull Snaps. with a brief interlude as the Four Puzzles, and then changed their name after their time with GSF to the Fantastic Puzzles.... They backed Tony Drake on Let's Play House, but weren't credited on the label......so I guess that's the tour connection...

Strewth.........you are touchy aren't you .....I didn't say that you only liked Northern, and you're right, if I had then I'd wear the pompous badge. Ok, so if you like Northern, modern, deep, funk, crossover, soulful house, jazz, jazz-funk and deep disco as I do....then I apologise for being over presumptious im my take on your trashing a really great soul tune like Larry Houston...otherwise my comment stands.... ..

You're unlikely to like the same records as me 'cos my taste goes beyond Northern...... .........there's plenty of tunes on here I don't like.....but I wouldn't write them off as "rubbish" just because they don't fit into my world......
  21. Of course it's ok to play.............. ..............if you're a plastic soul DJ....
  22. Are you referring to Angie Stone....I Wish I Didn't Miss You ?
