Soulful Youth
dospan - both Yogi and reg are still going and still hitting the dancefloor. Both will be at the plinston tomorrow night in sunny Letchworth, Herts. Both top guys and this despite Reg now looking like Dave Hill from Slade!!! Check the gallery under Plinston and you'll see many pics of him. They do run quite a few great soul nights and can often be found with a huge smile slipping up my back passage.......to my house!

Changes On Site
Karen, I dont think they'd give a toss about being named and shamed. Some of these people have very very VERY tough skin sadly. I think Mike is right in what he's doing, at least this way if you have a view you post it and accept comments good or bad.

What Song First Gotcha?
My first big vinyl love was Frankie Valli's 'You Ready Now'. Just wonderful and I remember how all of in Letchworth made a bee line to taffy's place over the chippy in the town centre to secure a copy whilst going green with envy at his Brit Soul collection. Some things never change and the man still manages to pull an endless stream of top toons that immediately go on my wants list!

Instrumentals
'Soul Step' by the Dogs always envokes happy memories for me. Young Jacko, member of this very site and all round top man, and I were at a do in Peterborough having our usual debate on all things soulful whilst the Rockin' Rev, Tony Clayton, was behind the wheels of steel. During the course of said discussion the Rev spun an instrumental (forget what) and Jacko gave me his speech, complete with expletives and hand gestures. on just how f**king sh**e instrumentals were and had nothing to do with soul whatsoever!!! I was impressed by his passion on this subject and, as he was older than I, made a mental note of his comments. So, imagine my surprise and shock when, just as he finished his impassioned rant, the Rev announced the next record..."and now we have another great sound from the late Nev's collection, the wonderful instrumental sound of The Dogs and Soul Step!' The hall errupts and Jacko turns to me and, without the slighest hint of irony or even shame, says: "F**K ME! I LOVE THIS RECORD!!!!" and then procedes to hit the dancefloor, leaving me and my now floor bound jaw to watch in amazement! Ah, the memories. hats off to you Jacko and still my fave instrumental of all time.

Soulvation
The rare Soul DVD's are very good and I have a shed load of stuff on video I've picked up from friends and contacts in the States that i will get around to having put on DVD one day as well. Another thing to look out for in the not distant future is the DVD release of 'The Beat' tv prog from Texas that came out on video some years ago and that also features on the Rare Soul DVD's.

Pioneers On Mercury?
I still love it Alison and also the latest one by the group that Dave Halsall (that well known Man City fan ) spun me, then sold on the same night to Nathan (who borrowed the money from me to purchase said record!) and that The Godfather Taffy has also just brought. To say I'm slightly p***ed off is puting it mildly. Now, what is the name of that bloody record

How many more times Vinnie, the Turkish Bath Soul Room is our little secret

Plinston Main Hall Policy
I'm still a little confused Denis but if I am understanding you right I take it you mean we should have been spinning a lot more stomping oldies? If that's the case then we have always stated that we spin current biggies, sixties newies and forgotten oldies in the Main Hall (in the main and lets leave the question of 70's as above for now) What constitutes a dancer to one person is completely opposite to another, it's down to preference and choice really. Just sorry we couldn't hit the spot for you on the night mate.

Plinston Main Hall Policy
Hi Gareth and a good point, but if you read my first post here you'll see I pointed this very point out. Didn't say the Main Hall would be 60's only, did say it would be 100% Northern Soul and that means, in my book, Flame N King, Ann Sexton etc etc can be played in there. As you say, trying to box sounds into certain categories etc is a very dangerous road to go down. At the end of the day it will be the dancers and the DJ's who will decide what is and isn't acceptable to be played. Now can I please get back to my sofa, footballers wives is on soon :-)

Strange Remakes Of Northern Soul Records
There are loads of covers - Yazz 'The Only Way Is Up'; Kylie 'Time Will Pass You By' (I think it was this one); 4 Vandals 'Wrong Side Of Town' - oh, hang on, that's real isn't it

Plinston Main Hall Policy
oh no it wasn't! My understanding from the lads old enough at the time (1978 was my introduction to the scene) that this arguement over what should be played has been raging for over 30 years...agree with you, lets just get on with enjoying the music we all love, everything else doesn't really matter. Just enjoy what you like.

Early 80,s
I think my friend Jenny still hears from Willie Mercer but have no idea where Marc and the others are now. It really was a great allnighter, great toons, great atmosphere and, before the end when it all went downhill rapidly, one of the best allnighters in the UK. There is video footage that Mr Gibbons took that I'd love to get a copy of as it features many of us dancing and doing all the acrobatics in the days when we could do so without risking a visit to the local hospital!!! Anyone have a copy?

Prophets And The Originals
And I have a tape with another more finished version lurking somewhere upstairs, slightly more 'crossover' in feel, just to confuse things (is this a carl Willingham tape?)
