  1. ive been resisting this to be honest as its been done so many times but i just cant help myself !....and im bored at work and it keeps me off ebay !! firstly let me say if a venue/dj plays boots its up to them ..it wouldnt make me stay away from there gig (if i wasnt going elsewhere that is!) BUT...there has been lots of talk about djs playing safe with ovo gigs and spinning the same old same old, i reckon if there was no problem with boots a lot more would be spinning the same old same old and then those dancers who dont care about format actually probably would when EVERY venue is playing more or less the same tunes !....AND lots of wicked cheaper originals wouldnt be getting spinned and 'discovered'... as far as the royalty arguement goes unless they were the songwriters i wouldnt have thought the atrists get anything from legit reissues anymore than bootlegs !....if soul was anything like reggae back then they would have been paid for singing the tune by the producer and thats it..done !....and i cant see any djs/dealers sending them a percentage of the massivly inflated ammounts they sell the said tunes on for 40 years later....and why should they ofcourse the 'scene' inc bootlegs,re issues and demand for ov helps the artists getting more work ,live appearences to this day....as dean parish kept saying at hemsby 'thank god for northern soul' cos without it he and many others would have been skint and long forgotten... in my opinion

oh and musically speaking ray charles and stevie wonder were both genius's (grammer ?).... my brother plays sax and he says learning some of stevies later stuff was a nightmare, you could make half a dozen songs out of the riffs in one of his ...

just beat me mentioning gamble/huff......what about mr womack....he scribbled a few good ones too !
  5. i agree business is business but i think sellers should advertise that they may take it off at any point ,which some do.....i suppose they all get plenty bidders changing their minds and not buying though !
  6. ofcourse !!...... never been one for saving ....always another tune
  7. ...youve all brought a smile to my face ....soooooo many wants of mine being sold at the moment !!!....why did christmas have to happen ! bah hunbug and all that... by the way all offers accepted and thorsten can i swap that real million dollar bill for your latest sales list please ?!!
  8. more money !!! ......sorry
  9. say what you mean pete !....dont skirt around the egdes....
  10. think this has been touched on before but one way of knowing would be if all promoters advertising on here on any one given saturday were to do an honest CORRECT headcount and post up on the monday.....not hard really but probably impossible !! ok there are plenty nights on that do not visit this site....add to that lots of scooter events where northern is played so it will be 'conservative' count but interesting still...
  11. would go with the jackie day too....ginger played it at bridgewater saturday....up there with naughty boy,how come the two best jackie day are the two rarest ??....why were they unreleased or rare as rocking horse shit ! what was wrong with people in the 60s ??

  13. was it who the contours sang good night too ? ....and why do bristol rovers fans sing it too her aswell ??..dont know as im not local

funny enuff ive played that out twice recently at go go children here in bristol....lots of youngsters who wouldnt know it but love it and did...but yeah agree a big tune once played to death you dont hear at BIG oldies nights today.... also the first northern tune i bought hey little way out girl....never hear it at oldies nites
  15. i heard a well respected dj say that at a nite last month and thought to myself how could he possibly say that !....it wasnt a great tune and could be sitting at the back of a lot of peoples boxes ..... i bought a chi-lettes tune last week off ebay and checked a few sites for a price guidline and it wasnt on any and through 5 pages of the artist on manships site hed only had 1 before described as their rarest release on brunswick....although not why i bought it and wasnt expensive....ive seen another 2 since !....so not that rare at all

even though im bored with ruby whatsa name !....i love oldies and even kings hall which a lot of people would describe as a SOSO venue...BUT....if youre gonna go to an oldies/classics nite THAT is the venue to go to IMHO.... and there are sooooo many oldies that should get more plays instead of dare i say it the same old same old ...and yes agree should be mixed into a set with lesser known tunes maybe we should add to this old classics which are described as soso but actually you havnt heard for a while ??..... one of my old faves is dont pity me/joannie sommers....not sure about up north (think it was played at last kings hall) but never hear it down here...and my mrs often request it but no one 'seems 'to have it .... blue eyed soul mite not be as in today as the 70s but wouldnt mind hearing too many people either...or should i log off get my coat and spend the weekend in a dark room !!
  17. as for yo yo how many times do you actually hear it out nowadays compared to just loving you....which is the whole point cos if ALL venues allowed boots you would probably hear a even more djs playing JLY !!

ruby winters-just loving you.. .....time for the toilet !!
  20. but thats another great thing about soul no one can ever know all the tunes out there...im often surprised at long time soulies and even dealers who dont know certain tunes.....only recently on this site there were threads about judy cleys busting my mind, betty swann lonely love, fontella bass i cant rest...all cheap 'common' tunes but quite a lot of people didnt know them ....i bought jackey beavers hold on and esquires how could it be off a dj/dealer who didnt know them but they arent rare....and sometimes ive been out and everyone on the dancefloor seems to know the words of a tune except me !!... as for yo yo how many times do you actually hear it out nowadays compared to just loving you....which is the whole point cos if ALL venues allowed boots you would probably hear a even more djs playing JLY !!
  21. not too sure what you are getting at.....do you mean the above tunes are no good and no one would ask the titles or that everyone should know them already ?..... the point i was making is as a punter i love to hear tunes i dont know ,not possible when a dj plays boots of biggies all night, heard them all before......as a dj i love it when people ask me the title of a tune and then go looking for it also not possible if i played boots of biggies all night as most people i know cant or wont pay that money for them and all know them cos theyre on every northern compilation cd in asda....
  22. i didnt think it was about rare tunes.....just good ones !.....and something you dont hear all the time....
  23. and how good is it when you play a tune and someone comes up and asks what it is !..(not so with most boots)....especially if that someone is a long standing soulie and that tune is a cheapie...and before you say it NO NOT BECAUSE I HAVE AN EGO THAT NEEDS FEEDING but because i too know that buzz when you hear a new tune at a gig and you just have to run to the dex !!....and thats the way biggies are made. and has always been one of the good things about this scene...we tell each other what the new tunes are not the tv/radio (big business)....pass the knowledge.....make the new biggies some wicked CHEAP ORIGINAL DANCERS bought recently and unavailable on boot i cant wait to spin !... are you my woman/chi-lettes...£7....great 60s slightly funk with beyonce sample just like a yo yo /ruby winters...£4....im so bored with just loving you and could never afford it (the original that is ,why buy the boot when this is better anyway ! IMHO...and thats what counts) she looks good/rodger collins £4 uptempo mod soul you know whats to do/barrett strong £4 doubled sided rnb i dont wanna talk about it /nancy ames £6 BIG production/vocals... small price stop and listen/shirley vaughn £9 more uptempo with great brass alternative to well played patti drew ok all off ebay with a bit of crackle on the intro but even near mint most of these would be under 20
