  1. Would have been better to call it "The Soul Of Colonel Sanders"!! KFC
  2. The Holy Grail? I'm disappointed - I was expecting a review of a Monty Python film!! Gene

"Lovin' Time" - it's OK as an early '60s female vocal (1962 to be spot-on), but for some reason (probably my warped sense of humour) I keep thinking of monkeys swinging from trees when I hear the organ backing!! Gene
  4. Ne'r heard o them Mac! Mebee a wee tattie scone......... Gene
  5. Aye, ah ken - nay bother!! Gene
  6. On the South-West coast of Scotland Mick.........best known as the birthplace of Robert Burns, and also for its large racecourse!! As my wife would probably translate the Roy Robert title "I ken hoo tae satisfee ya wee self fae ye, son"!!! Gene
  7. Anyone puzzled by the above should ask me, and I'll ask my wife who's from Ayr to translate!!! Gene
  8. Not heard his version yet Dayo - but if you play the 4 Tops version, there it is!! Thought Hannibal's version was backed with something like "Give me your heart, your eyes, your brain........"!!!! Gene
  9. That's right James - but under the new forum ruling, it's not possible for me to post the link to the ad until the auction has finished. As far as I know, the great majority of records from this subsidiary (Paula, Ronn, Jewel) were pressed on vinyl rather than styrene. Not sure about this one though, but I would safely guess that it's pressed on vinyl. Gene
  10. Appetizing, just like the lyric from "Do What You Wanna Do" by the Four Tops: "Baby, I loved you more than your own kidney"!!! Gene
  11. According to a bit of history I've just read up on about this: "The three-piece Bill Bush Combo produced the track as a promotional item to advertise their band in 1965. It was released on Stan Lewis' RONN label (named after Stan's brother). Sales were minimal at the time and many remaining stock copies were lost forever during a clean out at Jewel records in the 1970s. In addition, a number of the original, and only, pressing, were pressed with labels off-centre." Here's a picture of the Bill Bush Combo - I presume Bill is in the centre (love the dicky-bows!):
  12. Sorry Ian - but the amazing technicolor Genecoat remains safely with me!!! Gene

To back Gareth's account up, I remember when Ian Clark made this available to the "masses" by finding an unknown quantity. He first sold them through the small ads of Black Echoes in April 1983 at £7 each. I phoned Ian to ask him if they were original, and he told me they were as he'd just found a load of them in the States. My copy arrived a week later, and it was the green/white issue with slapdash credits (jan jones rather than "Jan Jones"!!). As far as I remember, Keb dropped it from his playlist in February that year, along with all other 70s/80s newies he previously played (eg, Cheryl Berdell, Curtis etc), to make way for the big "60s Mafia" sounds soon to take Stafford by storm, but that's another story!! Gene
  14. I'll get me coat...........for you Ian!!! As Mikey says, all boots were bad repros of demos. As far as I'm aware, the issue on Ebay (and yours for that matter) are all original. Soul did use black or silver lettering when the mood took them, and I'm certainly not aware of the issue being booted!! Gene
  15. HI Geoff, I think that must have been "You Done Me Wrong" by El Baron. Don't think it's know at the mo, since everyone I ask about it has never come across it before!! Glad you liked it tho, and it was lovely to see you and Lesley there. I hope the El Baron will pick up after a few more plays now!! Gene

Nice piece Oliver!! Best thing I like of hers is "It Won't Stop Hurtin' Me", a 45 she cut for Lennox in 1963. I think it's a semi-known on the soul scene here......anyone confirm just how known it is? Gene
  17. As requested by a few, here's my playlist from the 3rd Anniversary nite at Boogaloo (Saturday 5th June). This reminds me of something Cat Deeley used to do on S&M-TV on Saturday morning before CD:UK!!! Only that was more something like: Westlife / Boyzone? Boxers / Pants? Ant & Dec / David and Ruben? ...etc, etc........ Gene

To be honest, I don't know what some people would have found more embarrassing; either the Dancing Comp itself, or the degrading pile of shite 7" soul pack 45s which were sometimes given away as a prize!! How many copies of "Cool Aid" by Paul Humphrey on Lizard would you have found in one of those? Gene

Hi Dave, I presume you mean "Seven Days Too Long", in which case a UK Big T issue would, I guess, sell for about £15. Maybe Mick Smith can correct me here? Hope that's right, that's what I sold mine for a few years ago! There's another single by him on the label "I've Got My Lovelight Shining" - possibly worth around £8 - £10. Gene

  23. Eh?.......What?
  24. How very kind of you George (Agent Double R Soul)!! Sadly, I choose to decline your modest offer!! Gene
  25. Don't worry about it Tony!! There's still a pint or two waiting on the bar for you when I see you next!! Happens to all of us....... Take care mate, Gene
